Mets Send Cedeno To DL, Hefner Called Up, Edgin To Buffalo

Update 4:00 PM

Ronny Cedeno has been placed on the 15-day DL with a strained intercostal muscle.

To take Cedeno’s place on the roster, the Mets recalled RHP Jeremy Hefner from Triple-A Buffalo who had been put on the taxi squad earlier.

Cedeno, 29, is hitting .250 (3-12) in 10 games, three starts, this season.

Hefner, 26, is 2-1 with a 1.96 ERA (four earned runs/18.1 innings) in three games, all starts, for the Bisons. The 6-4, 215-pound native of Perkins, OK, beat Lehigh Valley, 4-1, in his last start on April 18 in Buffalo.

Jordany Valdespin technically is still on the taxi squad at the moment, allowing him to participate with the Mets for up to 24 hours without being activated.

There may be another move after the first game of the doubleheader. Batista could go to Buffalo and Spin could be activated after game one.

Also, closer Josh Edgin has been promoted from Double-A Binghamton to Triple-A Buffalo.

We’ll know more in a few minutes, but Adam Rubin is reporting that IF/OF Jordany Valdespin and RHP Jeremy Hefner are due to be at Citi Field as part of a taxi squad. They are allowed to be with the team for 24 hours without being activated.

Teams are now allowed to utilize a Taxi Squad particularly when doubleheaders after a suspended or cancelled game taxes a team’s roster.

Valdespin, 24, was hitting .276 with two homers and seven RBIs in 76 at-bats with Triple-A Buffalo and has been playing mostly center field this season

  • Valdespin gets to hang with the big club for a day. Must be nice.

  • So what does this mean?

I thought the rule was for questionable players with injuries.

How does this work with double headers and rain outs?

Does this mean that someone on the 25 man could get sent down? and if they do, how long do they get sent down for? Or is it for having 27 men available for the 25 man roster and you can shuffle your eligible 25 men from game to game?

I can’t see Valdespin being here for a back up roll. Baxter and Turner aren’t playing great, but they’ve had limited experiences and they hold bench spots anyways.

So if someone goes down who is it? Wright, Tejada, Murphy, Thole and Ike should be safe…Kirk has played well, so he shouldn’t be going anywhere. Duda and Bay are struggling, but they can’t be ready to give up on either guy this early in the season.

So how is this supposed to work?

    • Have seen different reports, but I think they get to add a 26th man just for the day, and will deactivate someone while he is here. But, no actual roster moves (sending guys down).

So I suppose you could deactivate Pelfrey for the day and activate Heffner? something like that.

Valdespin, not sure what that is all about. You could activate him for 1 game, but that would not help the pitching shortage any.

  • There are tweets saying Collins may have a player going on dl in next hour but won’t say who in case it doesn’t happen so as to not tip off Giants.

    • As speculation continues on who might be going on the dl this is the funniest tweet so far.

      • hahaha
Looks like the potential injury candidate is Cedeno. Not out practicing with the team, per Rubin.

        • LoL, If it’s Cedeno I can imagine how the Giants knowing he is hurt but not on the dl could have had major implications in how they strategize during today’s twin bill. :-D

    • Hopefully Francisco didn’t hurl a chair across the clubhouse and accidentally injure someone.

  • So it looks like sooner or later, with Havens getting healthy again and Vspin opening eyes, the Mets are going to have to address what to do with Murphy. I would not be surprised if he is traded around the deadline for a young pitcher to take Pelfrey’s spot next year or maybe some catching depth.

    • assuming he doesn’t develop into some kind of gold glover in the next few months, i could easily see that happening, but only if they can get a respectable return. it would not be a trade to get rid of a guy.

He would also be a fine guy for the bench. Might not enjoy it, but would make the team better.

but the trade option is certainly viable.

Havens is still my pick as the best overall player (looking at O and D) for 2B right now, pending of course staying on the damned field.

  • Yeah we all know how SF will have to change their strategy for the series if they found out Cedeno was going on DL (another waste of money when u could’ve brought up a kid who can do the same thing)

    • Which kid though? It isn’t that simple.

Cedeno is a bench guy that is not going to play much by the nature of his role. So, what prospect do you want doing that instead?

If you call up a “real” prospect, they should play (and the fanbase will go nuts). And if it is a marginal guy (non-prospect), odds are they aren’t going to do any better than a veteran like Cedeno.

Playing off the bench is actually a specialized talent. Not all guys are able to do it effectively. Would not surprise me at all if Valdespin say was one of those guys that would not handle it well (attitude about it comes into play also.)

A couple week DL replacement stint is one thing. That is more of a special treat. But spending the whole year as a spare part is a different story.

  • So according to Rubin it looks like Hefner will be activated for game 1 to back up Batista (which help the pen at least) and Spin will be activated after the doubleheader.

    http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/mets/post/_/id/43369/rojas-valdespin-to-be-promoted

It gives them another lefty bat off the bench at least for better balance to go along with Turner’s righty bat where before they didn’t have one.

    • this makes a lot more sense. Hopefully between the 2 pitchers, they can go deep enough in the game to not wipe out the pen.

It can be like one of those games in A ball where they “piggyback” 2 pitchers.

  • Batista @41 is a promising poet. He is done as a ball player. Send him down or cut him. Hefner has been a workhorse in the minor leagues. Keep him up in the role of the long man. Spin gets a look see at the bigs. He plays where we are weak up the middle. Play him in center, let’s see if he can hit in the majors. Captain Kirk has earned his keep. The man can hit. Move him into a platoon with Bay. Bay can be our right handed bat off the bench.

  • Hefner WFAN announced was sent down and Valdespin is now activated.
