Post Game: Mets Come Up Short In 4-3 Extra-Inning Loss To Giants

Recap

Jon Niese has himself another good start. He only went six innings and allowed seven hits, but kept the Giants to only three runs. He walks two and strikes out five. Niese continues to prove himself to his contract with another start that was not helped by much hitting. He walks away with a no decision. His inability to go deep into games is still discerning, however.

Ramirez and Rauch combine for two innings with a hit each. Byrdak keeps it at a one-run game in the ninth with a no-hit inning of work. Francisco did not have as much success as he gives up a run in an inning of work, and gets the loss. Another closer that can’t work outside of non-close situations.

Niewenhuis gets his first start against a lefty starter and hits a solo homerun into left in the fifth inning. He was not done impressing as Niewenhuis made an impressive diving catch in the eighth to rob an extra-base hit. He has been a very good positive for this team on both sides of the game.

Not much offense for the Mets as before the ninth it was only two runs with solo shots from Kirk and Bay. A ninth inning RBI single from Josh Thole to tie the game and bring the game into extras. Despite great effort from the Mets, it was not enough to get the win.

Notes

Matt Harvey gets his first Triple-A victory in the Bisons 6-4 win.

Mets have now dropped 4 out of 5.

Mets had a total 23 men LOB.

Hero of the Game

Despite losing, Kirk had a great game.

  • Just heard Collins say he didn’t know what he would do when Torres comes back. Kirk is making a believer out of him. Before the game he said Torres would get CF job, now he doesn’t know, love it.

  • Bay just needed some solid contact. What a mess!

  • Another tough loss. Niese despite his inability to fool the Giants did at least keep the Mets in the game. The pen pitched well for the most part but man how those leadoff walks come back to hurt you, Francisco. smh

Ike Davis 0 for 5 – Maybe he needed the day off rather than Duda.

On the positive side Rauch continues to pitch well though he owes Kirk dinner at least for that just awesome catch he did to end the inning. Which brings me to the next positive Capt Kirk. Oh man what a play in CF 2nite which was the cherry on top of him hitting the HR vs the lefty. Keep it up kid. Finally the at bat by Thole was just in a word “Great”.

3 game losing streak tomorrow is as good a time as any to end it and start a winning streak.

    LGM!!!

  • They need to get Davis out of cleanup spot.He is just waving at breaking balls and leaving tons of guys on base.Problem is Duda is cold and Jason K should be in 7 hole, not cleanup spot.Is it crazy to put thole in the 2 hole and Murphy clean up for a few games. He is terrific with men on and won’t strike out as much as Davis.Leaving runners on is a big problem right now..Very tough loss tonite.

  • Off Topic: Congrats to Harvey on his 1st win in AAA. A much improved outing this time around. 6.0/IP 4/H 3/ER 3/BB 10/SO. On the flipside Peavey struggled 2nite lasting just 3 2/3 8/H 5/ER 1/BB 2/SO.

  • That new closer is another total bust brought in by Alderson. The guy (ALDERSON) is so past his time. Thank goodness Minaya rebuilt the farm which was the worst in baseball when he came in, or else this team wouldn’t be as good as the ’62 Mets if it depended solely on the crap that Alderson has brought in to the org.

    • Yup, let’s put the blame on Francisco that the Mets couldn’t score a run when they really need to. Let’s blame Francisco that the Mets had TWO big opportunities in the 9th and 10th inning to drive in the winning run with RISP and CHOKED. No, it wasn’t Baxter, Tejada, Davis, Duda, and Bay. It was ALL Francisco, right? This is EXACTLY why people were foolish to be so excited this early because of a good start: they can’t drive in runs when they need to, a weakness of theirs for years. Please, spare me the Omar saved the farm bullshit. It’s beating like a dead horse. Besides, if you paid attention, Sandy’s picks from the draft last year are performing well above expectations.

      • Well isn’t the job of your closer to not allow runs to score?
Especially runs that are the result of walking a guy on 4 pitches to start the inning?

Sure there were opportunities to score runs when we needed them.
That happened in the 9th didn’t it?

As for Sandy’s Aquisitions none of them helped us last night nor at anytime this season to win a game!
But one has to wonder what might have happened with a Reyes or Beltran in the lineup last night?
What might have happened if K-Rod came in to close the game?

But no thats not important what is important is to make sure not to scratch the Teflon GM and keep him looking shiny and not responsible for anything that happens this year!
        Unless they win something right?

        • Is this crap gonna happen every time we lose? Imagining what would’ve happened if the Mets had Reyes, K-Rod & Beltran? Someone pass the barf bag.

“Well isn’t the job of your closer to not allow runs to score?
Especially runs that are the result of walking a guy on 4 pitches to start the inning?”

You should be used to having innings start like that since K-Rod used to do that on occasions when he was here and wind up having you at the edge of your seat. But we’ll sweep that one under the rug…

“Sure there were opportunities to score runs when we needed them. That happened in the 9th didn’t it?”

Did they win? No? You didn’t pay attention when I mentioned they failed to drive in the WINNING RUN, not the tying run.

          • No…not anymore often than we are going to get whole pieces about how great Tejada is doing vs Reyes 7 games in or how when we won a few games to start off raving about how great that Bullpen is only to see it cost us quite a few games during this lcurent losing streak…

You guys wanted to gloat over the fast star I see no reason to not show you how foolish it is to count those unhatched chickens…

            • “You guys wanted to gloat over the fast star I see no reason to not show you how foolish it is to count those unhatched chickens…”

Who’s “you guys” exactly? Sure as hell ain’t referring to me because I thought it was utterly stupid how people were bragging because of the good start, despite dropping a winnable series Vs Washington, a team who’s entire lineup was punchless with the exception of Zimmerman and Desmond at the start of the series. It was even more ridiculous that we lost that last game in Philly. Those things right there showed me that we weren’t as legitimate as others made us out to be. Only reason people acted this way is because they thought we would be buried in the NL East division from the word go. Only now are we starting to fall behind.

              • Obviosly you haven’t been regularly reading the site in the last two weeks either.

Never said you were the one who gloated but many on this site jumped right into the I Told You So pool as quick as they could and truth is before the water was really ready as recent events have showed!

Truth is we had a good start because we faced the Jonesless bad hitting Braves to start the season Showed what we see now vs Washington and then faced the Utleyless and Howardless Phillies!

  • Interesting to note that the only HR hit last night that would have went out in old Citi was Bay’s.
Still has some power, just cannot get around on most pitches he swings at.

    • Actually even more interesting is the fact that the two guys who the fences were moved to help (Wright and Bay) have all hit HRs that didn’t require the new dimensions but the two guys who didn’t appear to need the fences moved in (Ike and Lucas), all thier HRs were helped by the new fences. I’m sure there are one or two exception there but the majority of the HRs Ike and Duda have hit have been because of the new dimensions.

  • Poorly written article. The Mets lost because they have a crappy closer. Niese had a quality start and despite his rough beginning kept the team in the game. The Mets need to change their line up though. Davis can’t hit clean up, he just waves at pitchs. Duda looks so lost this year. Sophomore slump I suppose. The Mets need to rethink the closer position. I know closers are the biggest wusses on the field but you gotta have a guy who can pitch when needed, not just in save positions.

  • Both Lucas Duda and Jason Bay are just 1 for 13 so far this season with RISP. I agree with Gary S. I think TC needs to shake things up- Thole in the 2 hole, Murph in the 3 hole, Wright clean-up, Kirk 5th and then Duda, Ike and Bay batting from 6th to 8th. It sounds crazy but Bay, Duda and Ike are killing the Mets with RISP.

  • I don’t get why people are knocking Niese as much as they are. Giving up 3 runs in a game is not a horrible day!

Truth is this team is not hitting with RISP.
And I blame some of that on the new Home Run Happiness this team seems to be sufferring from.
We moved in those fences and now most of our runs seem to be from HRs not hitting in a conga line.

Last year we had 108 HRs on the season. At our current rate we will have 174 projected HRs this season.

Our BA this year so far is .255 compared to .264 last year. OBP.331 compared to .355
We are 8th in the league in OBP this year 21st in Hits, 25th in RS and 24th in RBIs but 12th in HRs

I know HRs are exciting but if thats where the majority of your runs are coming from it’s not a good sign going forward!

    • Very well thought-out theory. I was in the vast minority being against changing the dimensions. Everyone was so certain the big field was “getting in people’s heads” and altering their swing and doing all these devilish things to hitters, no one managed to think that maybe moving in the fences would not solve the problem, but simply create a different one. Sure, the home runs are up, but it’s not helping any, is it? The Mets have 48 runs in 13 games, as opposed to 63 runs after 13 games last season. Maybe the fences weren’t the problem.

      • Well for once we were on the same side of the minority.

It should be pointed out how horrible we were in those first 13 games last year as well, but not because of the hitting.

That said I think it is correctable if Hudgens takes the bull by the horns and gets this he crap out of their heads. So far Wright appears to be the one guy who has not changed his approach. But I fear Ike may be affected and most definitely the worst offender is Duda followed by Bay.

        • Metsie I disagree about the fences. I think it was not only the absolute right thing to do but totally necessary and don’t forget – the fences are still deeper than what Shea Stadium was!

Maybe if these guys swing the god damned bats more instead of a HORRIBLE IDEA of a team-wide OBP philosophy then maybe they’ll be more aggressive and swing at close pitches with 2 strikes (like we were taught to). Trying to make everybody behave like a table setter is doomed to failure. Making everybody follow that stupid, stupid, stupid philosophy makes them more passive. I wish there was a stat to find out what pct of a team-wide OBP is left on base and does not drive in a run. I would call that just wasted OBP.

You know what the philosophy should be in the minors? Nobody advance unless they ALL know exactly what to do on the bases and know exactly what base to cover and where to throw the ball in all situation. Make them smarter, not this NONSENSE of making guys taking pitches – that has NOTHING to do with winning games and stuff like that should be treated individually on a case by case basis – NOT a team wide philosophy

          • Well we are 9th in Walks and 9th in Ks as well. 10th in BA and 8th in OBP.
I don’t know you can say from that they have been over passive compared to other teams.
Sure there are times they should have been protecting the plate more but most of those Ks are due to guys swinging uncontrolled bats and missing the mistakes they should be hitting and that is usually caused by over swinging trying to do something with a ball that is not conducive to going with the pitch and driving it.

In the case of Bay and Duda they have been trying to pull the ball and King on the outside pitch thats impossible to pull.

But I will point out that the bringing in of the fences has not showed any pain to the Pitchers.
They are projecting to give up 46 Hrs at Citi compared to 58 last year. But that doesn’t take into account that the Summer HR season has yet to be factored in.

        • I think Hudgens is doing a pretty good job, and I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt because it’s only 13 games in and you can’t distinguish who’s just having a slow start and who’s a legitimate problem yet. Keith and Ron fall all over themselves telling us how the Mets are showing a great approach for the most part, being aggressive in the zone and patient out of the zone. If it’s a mechanical failure in some of the swings, I have confidence Hudgens can get it worked out. The players seem to respond well to him and his teachings and he seems to know what he’s doing.

          • I’m sure he will get them sorted….If he gets even one in order it should help the other to see better pitches

      • Just to illustrate what I was talking about with Duda, Look at that last AB he had.

Pitcher opfferred up two hanging pitches, one he had a decent cut but got under because he was uppercutting and not swinging level and the second one he missed because he was again uppercutting and started his swing too early fouling it down the line.

a level swing and better timing the first pitch goes for a HR or at least drives in a run, the second would have gone up the line for extra bases.

  • This game (offensively) shows what happens when you don’t have those hitters around David hitting also.

David, Tejada and some great pitching and clutch hits here and there carried Mets early till the fateful losses in Atlanta by our 1 and 2 starters and then you face a anemic hitting, not against us, Giants team with good pitching and if not for a great slide by Duda to throw off Possey, who knows what this back end of BP might have done with Lincecum pitching on Sun.

Until Ike, Duda and Bay start hitting this lineup is weak in the middle and starter will have to try and keep it close while pitching.

Great win but if felt empty, I couldn’t even enjoy it, still can’t even make contact with RISP Bay!
