Last year speed was also a component for this team that at times allowed runners to get in better scoring positions plus the threat of a steal at times gave batters a better pitch, though Ike did not play most of year Duda did and was a pleasant surprise.

Getting on base is nice but if your pitch is coming then you have to swing cause you never know if you’ll get that pitch again.

Getting on base hasn’t worked to good for the “Moneyball pushers” in Oakland has it?

Patience. Ike will hit his average. And that is a lot of RBI between now and then. I also think Duda willhit, when he stops flailing at high hard ones.

I would bet a lot that if you asked Hudgens directly “if the pitcher throws a 1st pitch meatball to try and get ahead, do you want your guys to rip the snot out of it?”, the answer would be “of course”. same for do you want them driving the ball vs. passively trying to get a walk.

the problem is, when a guy gets messed up as badly as Ike, it seems they can’t ever get it right. If they take the first pitch, it is a fat one. If they go up aggresive and hack at it, it is unhittable.

anyway, I would still rather see a guy in a slump coming up with 2-3 men on base than bases empty. At least if he lucks into a base hit, you will get some runs!

Agreed, Hudgens has said over and over it’s not about taking pitches its about hunting pitches and right now Duda and Ike are not doing a very good job hunting.

if Ike and Duda were just having average, normal years (nothing outlandish) the Mets would be piling up runs. and no way does it look like some OBP fascination is their problem.

at some point, I hope, they have to have a hot streak, and if the guys in front are still getting on base at a good clip they wil be putting up big numbers.

Right if Ike and Duda WERE getting on base more then chances are we would be scoring more runs.

The quote starts with him referencing liking to have speed. It doesn’t say what was asked that led to this reply but I would speculate it could be related to table setters that don’t have the speed that Reyes which the article is about had when he was the Mets table setter.

I would agree and I would hope a hitting coach that talks about hunting for your pitch is doing just that and working with his guys on being more aggressive at the plate in hunting their pitch.

LOL, like Hudgens wants them taking 3rd strikes. Getting on base is not a bad thing. Law of averages say if you get on base enough you are most likely going to score more runs. You fail to mention that the Mets scored the most runs in the NL East last year as a result of that high OBP. This year they are also striking out too much as well. That doesn’t sound like a team where patience is the problem.
Would you rather him say:
““You always like to have speed, but it’s just a matter of, we need to get to get on base at a low rate,” Mets hitting coach Dave Hudgens said. “We get on base at a low rate, we’ve got good offensive players, we’ll score runs.”

Well, in a way he’s right. Have to have guys getting on base to score runs.

We have no problem getting guys on base. But as we’ve all been watching, we can’t seem to get those R.I.S.P. home. This has more to do with that big black hole in the middle of the line-up right now than anything else.

Usually if you have a black hole, it’s the bottom of the line-up. Not that you want to see that either but if your prototypical middle-of-the-order guys aren’t driving in runs, you’re not going to win many ball games.
