One of the things I found interesting when researching this article, Hoegy, is that after the Dodgers moved to LA he and his wife, Joan, kept the same house they lived in when he played in Brooklyn.

I attribute my Met fandom to Gil Hodges. My father was an avid Brooklyn Dodger and GIll Hodges fan. He became a Met fan because of Gil being a Met and absolutely hating the Yankees. I had met Gil and his family due to being on Bedford Ave in Brooklyn quite often. Always the gentleman and forever a basebal legend he was very modest and compassionate. I am sure he was critical in helping the Robinson's making it through some rough times. His tenure as the Mets skipper is indicative of getting the investment of players in a quiet way and reaping the benefits and a champagne shower with his troops. He had thier attention. They played for him.

He does belong in the Hall, is there already in so many ways, and right now I am sure that there has at least been a game of catch between my Dad and Gil. I like to think so. I love the image and both of their smiles.

To me the baseball guys who interrupted their careers to serve our great country in WWII are extra special. These guys went to war in the PRIME of their careers with no guarantee of coming home alive or of they did survive whether they would be enough of them left to even walk, or talk, or take care of themselves. Yogi Berra piloted a landing craft on Omaha Beach, Ted Williams was a fighter pilot and served in WWII and Korea, Joe Dimmagio, Bob Feller and so many more in the hundreds that gave and sacrificed so we can have the great sport of baseball today. A most appropriate article just before opening day.
