Breaking News: Jason Bay Placed On DL, Mets Call Up Zach Lutz
The New York Mets today announced the team placed outfielder Jason Bay on the 15-Day Disabled List with a nondisplaced fracture of a rib on the left side and recalled infielder Zach Lutz from Buffalo (AAA) of the International League.
Bay, 33, is hitting .240 (12-50) with three home runs and five RBI in 15 games this season. He underwent a MRI at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan this morning that revealed the injury.
Lutz, 25, hit .333 (21-63) with three home runs and 10 RBI in 19 games for the Bisons. The 6-1, 222-pound native of Reading, PA, was the Mets’ fifth-round pick in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft.
A fractured rib?
Knowing Bay’s history he’ll be out for three months at least. He’s a slow healer.
Get back soon Jason, we need your potent bat in the middle of our lineup…

“Get back soon Jason, we need your potent bat in the middle of our lineup…”
you know you have to warn people of sarcasm, right?
Honestly the last 9 games he’s been one of if not our best hitter.
Not very high bar there
True but did you see his stats during that time?
Jeeze Bay.
F – R – A – G – I – L – E, Must be French.
French Canadian.
While Bay will have time to count his millions his rein with the Mets has been a complete disaster.
Hmmm so Lutz up, what do they do with him? Is he just taking the bench spot while Hairston plays LF? Do they give him a few starts at 1B to rest Ike?
I have no idea what now.
Lutz only plays 1st and 3rd, right?
The two on the DL right now are CF and LF.
With Lutz and Valdespin up now, I’m not sure we’ll see the same line-up once in the next couple of weeks.
Unreal!!! Bay is quite possibly the worst free agent we ever bought to this team in our 50 years. He is a plague on our offense and a walking catastrophe.
I would say without a doubt he’s the worst. He makes Foster and Bonilla seem like steals.
interesting. Not sure TRS what they do. But, a few games at 1B sounds reasonable.
I am guessing that trying him in LF is no kind of option!
so hairston/baxter platoon in LF? With Valdespin the back up CF.
wonder how long until Torres is back too, and what happens then? Lutz back down? so maybe Lutz is just a few days guy
Is Lutz a good fielder?
He’s not a good fielder at 3B but he wont kill you either. The ball jumps off of his bat. He has a smooth level swing and hits for good power to all fields.
Could we PLEASE go back to the ticket price article now?
How are they holding up?! Cheap tickets right around the corner now!
How many ABs will Bay lose to this injury? Doesn’t he have some kind of performance option?
He does but really this year is not the important year with that, next year is. As for how long he will be out? Could be June, July? August?
Real, it does make a difference, since if he does not make this year’s threshold, it makes next years higher.
500 PAs in 2012 and 2013, or 600 in 2013. So if he does not make 500 this year, it will be much less likely for him to make the limit next year.
Right but 100AB is not that big of a difference. It’s not like if they are concerned about it next year they can’t platoon him and stay under 500 AB just as easy as 600. Honestly he could get 900 AB this year and it wouldn’t change things too much IMO.
Should have said PA. That’s what 20 games?
I think the reasoning behind the Lutz promotion over another outfielder is because AAA pitchers just can’t get Lutz out right now and they’re hoping he provides a lift offensively. The question is where does he play.
It’s all good that they can’t get him out but if they can’t find a place for him to play regularly then all you have done is take a hot hitter and make him cold.
So it looks like Lutz has played
223 games at 3B
31 games at 1B
2 games at 2B.
Maybe they do try and get him some time at 1B for Ike.
Does wright need a day off?
A couple of days for Ike though for sure.
other than that, can only see him as a PH.
I still think that this might be very temporary though, since he is a logical candidate to go back down when Torres comes off the DL. they are short an OF right now (unless you consider Valdespin one).
I am not sure Torres is close or being rushed either. Right now you could give Wright a day off here or there but with Bay out and Duda and Ike struggling can you afford to give Wright a day off?
Hey, I bet SRT will love this one
They could start V-spin at 2B and move Murphy back to LF and start Lutz at 1B some. LOL That way you get to see V-spin and Kirk at the same time. Imagine a fly ball like the one Kirk misplayed the other day only with Murphy and V-spin both involved as well.
If we see Murph out in LF, we’ve got more problems than just a couple of 15 day DL stints going on.
I know we have discussed this before but after watching Murphy at 2B do you think that if he was given enough time in the minors he couldn’t have been as good of a LF as he ever will be a 2B? I just think we put him in a no win situation in LF. Hey buddy, go play some LF… duh… OK.
I really don’t know. Maybe if he had played like 4 years in LF in the minors I wouldn’t mind. LOL.
Murph trying to learn LF at the ML level right now, with Duda over in RF and Kirk in CF is just a recipe for disaster, IMO.
The only bad thing about Jason K going on the DL is that eventually he has to come off the DL.Can’t hit for average or power, drops fly balls and is always injured.Good lord what a signing!!!!
Bay’s not the only one going on the DL. Now Pelfrey is on the DL with elbow swelling. Bring back Hefner!
They can’t for 5 days. Now, it looks liek Rob Carson will get the roster spot until Friday, when he will be replaced by Chris Schwinden
Well, they screwed the pooch sending Hefner so soon.
We’ll see Bay around the 4th of July. This has got to be one of the worse signings ever. ot only is he fragile, he stinks!
