Doctors can not just go operate at any facility they want!
They have to be a resident or affiliated with the Hospitals they work in! If you have ever had an operation you will notice that you don’t get to pick the hospital you get operated on the Doctor does!
Thats not because he likes one hospital better than another or because they have the best patient care it’s all because they pay him more than the other hospitals in the area!

Blame the Malpractice suits for that!

The Hospital of Special Surgery is the premiere orthopedic facility in the country!

What many don’t realize is it isn’t just the Mets who send their players there to get operated on!
So while it might seem odd that they ship those guys back to NY it really isn’t odd at all!
I bet the Marlins send players there as well!

Neither of them had any interest in baseball but one of them worked at the gym where the players were required to work out. She told me most of them just came by signed in and left without working out and headed out to the bars nearby.

I have no doubt that she was telling it exactly like it was (is).

They don’t train like guys who are going to play 162 games in about 180 days. No real endurance or stamina building at all.

Lots of politicking. The doctors at HSS or wherever they are sending Wright and Byrdak may not have privileges with whatever hospitals in FL are suitable for the Mets needs. Or the Mets agreement with HSS may forbid it.

There could be a thousand little things that have nothing to do with the actual care the patient receives.

Maybe there is better equipment in NY than at whatever hospitals are near where they are in FL. Maybe this “ultrasound guided cortisone shot” that they were speaking about Wright getting isn’t done everywhere? I don’t know.

Seriously, in NYC at HSS, they have everything set up for their first class professional staff. It’s not a knock at Florida but Orlando is not the Big Apple. There was a big stink a few years ago when the Mets were affiliated with another hospital in NYC. It had a lot to do with the expertise of that staff and their diagnoses. The Mets are not likely to let other ‘experts’ give their opinions — remember were talking opinions — and then have them reviewed by the HSS. Medicine is more parochial than that, especially with all the litigation that’s potentially involved.

The U.S. News & World Report ranked HSS as being the best hospital for orthopedics in the United States. See:

And don’t discount the HR binge era(aka the steroid era) where everyone it seems was trying to hit more HRs (even if that wasn’t their natural game). Or maybe it was as simple as seeing other guys all buffed up, and feeling like a weakling?

You look back at players from the 80s even, and they looked practically sleek in comparison to today.

I had said earlier in the day in the shoutbox that weightlifting is abused far too much these days. That’s what i think is the reason and the later i read Terry Collins address the situation and basically that’s what he said and I think it’s true. Most of the people here know that baseball is not that type of game. If you look back at the old videos of players playing in the 80s, earlier….. and even early 90s they look more slender but there’s no lack of power either.

More muscles = more injuries. I’m not a trainer but the weightlifting has to be cut down, replace with more stretching and bands exercise and IMO geared more towards the legs than upper body. But players now i guess they feel they have to look good now even though they’re risking more injury

I commented last week why the team doesn’t have Florida doctors recommended by the team doctors in NY and with video conferencing they could confer in real time. My brother told me he had an X Ray taken in PA. and it was read by a doctor in Australia.I still say the Mets and other teams put these requirments in the contracts but people dispute me on that. Anyway way back when players would play hurt because if they didn’t play some other player would take their job and they would be out of a job. I saw an interview from a 50′s player who said if they pulled a muscle or hamstring they would keep their mouths shut, tape it up and play through it. Today it’s a season ending injury. What has happened to this country?
