Wright and Byrdak Return To New York For Exams
Update: According to Kevin Burkhardt, Tim Byrdak will be having a surgery on his meniscus tomorrow.
Original Post: According to Mets.com, David Wright will be returning to New York to have an examination of his sore rib cage muscle that has kept him from participating in any games.
The Hospital for Special Surgery is expected to give Wright a cortisone shot. Terry Collins has already said Wright will not play in any games this coming week.
Tim Brydak will also be going to New York to have more tests done on his sore knee.
There is a possibility that surgery will be needed for Byrdak.
More information will be coming this week after tests and exams are completed.

why don’t they just fly the doctors from New York to FLA and keep them there? I’m sure there’s equipment to use and if not just fly it as well. Seems to make more sense than to have your ballplayers flying all over the place.
Or better yet, let’s forego the doctors in NY and try some in FL.
the doctors don’t have anything to do with the rash of injuries. So keep them, and go for a new training staff and maybe they won’t keep hurting themselves.
I think the problem lays more with the way they train, i agree. I had said earlier in the day in the shoutbox that weightlifting is abused far too much these days. That’s what i think is the reason and the later i read Terry Collins address the situation and basically that’s what he said and I think it’s true. Most of the people here know that baseball is not that type of game. If you look back at the old videos of players playing in the 80s, earlier….. and even early 90s they look more slender but there’s no lack of power either.
More muscles = more injuries. I’m not a trainer but the weightlifting has to be cut down, replace with more stretching and bands exercise and IMO geared more towards the legs than upper body. But players now i guess they feel they have to look good now even though they’re risking more injury
I’ve said for a while they should do less lifting and more Yoga for strength and flexibility.
And don’t discount the HR binge era(aka the steroid era) where everyone it seems was trying to hit more HRs (even if that wasn’t their natural game). Or maybe it was as simple as seeing other guys all buffed up, and feeling like a weakling?
You look back at players from the 80s even, and they looked practically sleek in comparison to today.
Bayonne — I agree with a lot of what you’re saying.
Ya, my lacrosse coach from college used to work with baseball teams as a trainer and he said they have some of the worst workout habits he’d ever seen. They don’t train like guys who are going to play 162 games in about 180 days. No real endurance or stamina building at all.
I met a couple of girls one night around the time that David Wright was just about to be brought up who were from Binghamton, so naturally I asked about the Bing Mets. Neither of them had any interest in baseball but one of them worked at the gym where the players were required to work out. She told me most of them just came by signed in and left without working out and headed out to the bars nearby.
I have no doubt that she was telling it exactly like it was (is).
Wow, that is worse than what my coach described. He said players just don’t stretch enough or focus on exercises that actually build up the attributes they need. It’s all weight lifting and getting big.
What you’re describing is just not giving a damn.
One of the team docs is flying down from NY to FL and they actually initially said Wright was going to see that guy, but they changed their mind. Maybe there is better equipment in NY than at whatever hospitals are near where they are in FL. Maybe this “ultrasound guided cortisone shot” that they were speaking about Wright getting isn’t done everywhere? I don’t know.
You’d be surprised how territorial hospitals and medical groups can be. Lots of politicking. The doctors at HSS or wherever they are sending Wright and Byrdak may not have privileges with whatever hospitals in FL are suitable for the Mets needs. Or the Mets agreement with HSS may forbid it.
There could be a thousand little things that have nothing to do with the actual care the patient receives.
I will point out the screwed up way our Health care system works!
Doctors can not just go operate at any facility they want!
They have to be a resident or affiliated with the Hospitals they work in! If you have ever had an operation you will notice that you don’t get to pick the hospital you get operated on the Doctor does!
Thats not because he likes one hospital better than another or because they have the best patient care it’s all because they pay him more than the other hospitals in the area!
Blame the Malpractice suits for that!
The Hospital of Special Surgery is the premiere orthopedic facility in the country!
What many don’t realize is it isn’t just the Mets who send their players there to get operated on!
So while it might seem odd that they ship those guys back to NY it really isn’t odd at all!
I bet the Marlins send players there as well!
I am pretty sure the doctors in NY have other patients too and have surgeries scheduled and all that. I commented last week why the team doesn’t have Florida doctors recommended by the team doctors in NY and with video conferencing they could confer in real time. My brother told me he had an X Ray taken in PA. and it was read by a doctor in Australia.I still say the Mets and other teams put these requirments in the contracts but people dispute me on that. Anyway way back when players would play hurt because if they didn’t play some other player would take their job and they would be out of a job. I saw an interview from a 50′s player who said if they pulled a muscle or hamstring they would keep their mouths shut, tape it up and play through it. Today it’s a season ending injury. What has happened to this country?
I’d say the biggest difference between a player that played in the 50′s and a player from say the last 25 years at least is the MLB Player’s Union and the amount of money being paid to players.
long term guaranteed contracts have a big part in it.
But, guys still do try and hide and play through injuries, especially guys that are worried about losing their spot (but not only them, even guys with LT deals still do it)
Having the Hospital for Special Surgery doctors fly to Florida would help to some degree. But it would be like having a plumber or a carpenter fly travel without their tool boxes. By going to the HSS, players from the Mets and the Knicks have access to radiology, tomography, MRI’s, ultrasound, etc. It’s all in one place and when a player is examined, the course of action can be immediately determined
Oy Vey, you think Florida is some wasteland. They have all those hi filutin machines and some pretty good bone doctors too. Oh yeah, don’t forget that tropical wasteland is wired now too. I hear they even have telephone service too-my gosh what will they come up with next?
Metfan Lou — This is Metfan Des who lives in Florida too. What part of the wasteland do you live in? lol.
Seriously, in NYC at HSS, they have everything set up for their first class professional staff. It’s not a knock at Florida but Orlando is not the Big Apple. There was a big stink a few years ago when the Mets were affiliated with another hospital in NYC. It had a lot to do with the expertise of that staff and their diagnoses. The Mets are not likely to let other ‘experts’ give their opinions — remember were talking opinions — and then have them reviewed by the HSS. Medicine is more parochial than that, especially with all the litigation that’s potentially involved.
The U.S. News & World Report ranked HSS as being the best hospital for orthopedics in the United States. See:

Des your in Florida?
This Met fan is here praying his favorite Football team gets manning!
LOL
Maybe, Just maybe we’re making a bit too much of this, maybe this stuff happens all the time, but with the way the media is now with tweeter, facebook and all those outlets, reporters are competing with each other to try and get more news and information.. maybe we’re making a big deal out of nothing, i don’t think all this should be an issue. of course, i can be wrong and maybe these players are not well condition, not well equiped etc…
either way, the season has been conceited by the front office so..
