Wally Backman Not A Fan Of The Underdog Tees Either
Check out this great SNY interview with Buffalo Bisons manager Wally Backman.
Wally gives his thoughts on the Underdog t-shirt and Ithink most of you will love his response. Backman also tabs Familia, Harvey and Gorski as prospects who could soon make an impact on the Mets. He also goes in depth on Daniel Murphy’s transition to everyday second baseman.
Check it out!

Again, F*** the U t shirts and wilpon for coming up with that crap, if everyone else is saying the team suck and will be no good is because of the people above who are puttin CRAP on the field but yet are telling the players, “guys, go out there and show the people you don’t suck as much ok” these are PROFESSIONAL baseball players who get pay to play the game, i think in the back of their mind they know they gotta earn their paycheck, they don’t need a reminder from the owner who is doing this just so he can get people on the seat to solve his financial issues..
Also, i love backman,as i said, i rather a manager/baseball player have tell me the development of a player and how he thinks he’ll do than some guywho NEVER grab a baseball bat in his life from BA tell me how they’ll do or some guy in front of a computer crunching number to get the players “VALUE” it’s pathetic and imo worthless.. one thing BA and Sabermetrics never will see, is a player dedication to be good despite his skills or talent or high ceiling, give me the player’s heart rather than his ceiling..
Saw an short interview last night with Bobby O on Murph playing second as well. He commented he thought Murph would be fine as long as he ‘didn’t try to do too much’. Meaning, covered the ground he’s supposed to instead of trying to be all over the IF (trying to get to balls that belong to Ike?) – and knowing where’s he should be and not be so as not to confuse Duda in RF either.
Listening to all these interviews…..IKD, could be me but I’m not hearing any of these guys flat out saying they have enough confidence in Murph to be able to play an adequate second base. More like a ‘wait and see’ type attitude.
I think it is reasonable at this point to need to see him in some game action to really know. Not sure how much you can tell from watching some drills.
And man, i would not want to get run over by Duda…
Very true. Remember the ST they stuck Murph in LF? No one seemed to have any concerns in ST. Wasn’t until the season started…then it was ‘uh, oh’……
That was one of the flaws I saw in the defensive metrics. The year Murphy played 1B he had a good score but I wondered how much of that was because he was “getting” to balls out of his range when he should have been deferring them.
If I was Terry Collins I would be looking over my shoulder-a lot!
Not if Wally keeps making quotes that trash the decision of the management! LOL
Right or wrong (and in this case right!) if you question him on the little things then what should they expect to happen on the BIG things should he ever be made manager!
Kind of like going to a job interview and telling the guy who is going to decide he was dumb for wearing that shirt with that tie! LOL
Murphy should have been traded in the offseason. He is not a second baseman.Maybe the real plan is to keep him around and play his real position (3rd base) when the Wilponzis trade Wright halfway thru the season.Btw, how much do you think those idiotic underdog tee shirts will be selling for in the ripoff mechandise stores all over Chittifield this year?
Wally I love you man and I think you could be the next mets Manager….
But for the love of god the TRUTH doesn’t always need to be spoken and many times shouldn’t when your one step away from being manager of the NY MLB franchise!
LOL
It’s not wise to trash your boss in the media even if you 100% correct about him being an a$$ for making up dumb T-Shirts to give out!
Please Wally….ZIP!
Not knowing how to position himself on a tag play found Murphy in line with the base which, due to the momentum of the runner, caused him to overslide the bag resulting in Daniel being spiked and out for the season. Even positioned wrong, Daniel would have been able to leap out of the way if he wasn’t kneeling down – which meant by being stationery he had no way of avoiding those spikes.
Underdog shirts should be burn in hell. Bad move Jeff, bad move.
