Hi Petey,

An original member of the new breed has to remember such things. LOL You got all of the facts right down to the very last detail other than for that and expressed them beautifully.

I too remember the anticipation leading up to that game and made sure I was home from a friend's house before the first pitch. It was raining lightly that Monday evening and was quite disappointed to find it held the crowd back to 44,000 paid (48,000 with the freebies from Borden's (the company had a promotion - collect a certain amount of box tops from certain drinks and get free admission to certain dates set before the season began - that's why the near 60,000 for Tom's near perfect contest).

What I remember most was Koozman nailing Santo in the wrists after the pitch close to Agee's head in the first. Kooz didnt throw just a purpose pitch - it seemed his intention was to hit Santo and hard to let the Cubs know the Mets couldn't be intimidated and pushed around. There was no way Santo could have gotten away from that inside pitch coming right at him.

Get the CD - it's great memory.

Thanks Joey D! If I may ask, how did you confirm it was a night game? It could have been and I may have gotten that part confused with another game from that year, but I guarantee all the other stuff in the article is totally accurate. I researched everything thoroughly, and all the stats and game happenings are as they happened. I even looked online but couldn't find the start time for the game anywhere, just the game time which was 2 hrs. and 9 mins. (Might be why I thought it was a 2:05 start). I even searched everywhere for my actual 1969 scorecards and yearbook, to see the schedule in there, to no avail. But I'll tell you one thing, I was trapped in Mr. Greenleaf's class when a lot of huge games were happening that September!

Pete,

Only one thing wrong with your otherwise great trip down memory lane - that game was played on a Monday night! Sorry.

Mr. Greenleaf and your teachers would not have stopped you from watching the game on TV unless - as a 12 year old - you were going to night school! :) But still, a great way to lead up to the excitement that possessed us all back then and as an original New Breeder I share that wonderful summer of sixty nine with you and all that led up to it.

If anyone is interested, the Miley Collection is a series of complete game radio broadcasts that he taped over the years and is now available on CD. More are being added all the time but there are many great Met games from the very first one against St. Louis (where Roger Craig did NOT drop a ball on the mound causing the first run given up by the Mets to be on a balk) all the way up to present time.

From 1969 I have many, including Tom's near perfecto, the Agee game you talk about, Gentry's division clincher and game three of the NLCS - all with the great voices of Ralph, Lindsey and Bob. Other games from that year are also available. As an 18 year old I too had taped those three regular season games on and cried when I could no longer find either them or the old reel to reel recorder.

So, many of us can still go home again - at least for a few hours - by listening to these great CDs.

Damn, the only thing I needed for my trip down memory lane to be complete was a wad of Bazooka Joe bubble gum to chew on while I read this. Thanks for making me feel my age, Petey. And keep this kind of stuff coming!

I would never do that to my Mom, back in the day. She was a worry wart. I'd be in the doctor's office before you could blink and would probably miss the game anyway.

Although it was great to have experienced the '69 and '73 WS, being that young I thought it would always be that easy for my team to get to post season. Little did I know.....

Ahhh Pete! you brought me right back there! LOL
Bellbottoms and all! LOL

But I am surprised at you for going to school!
Didn't any of your friends tell you the key secrets a kid like us needed?

Every kid should know you always request tea for breakfast on school days, On days you don't want to go to school you cough a bit, say you don't feel good and when your mother comes to take your temperature as soon as she leaves the room put that HOT tea to good use! LOL Instant Fever and day of Met Playoffs!

Just be careful not to go over over 101 degrees or you wind up in the hospital and it is not advised to try this trick unless you have an oral thermometer! LOL

Oh, thanks for the memories, Pete.
We're right around the same age and I had just started seriously following the Mets in '68.
Have to say, your memories of games watched are a lot better than mine. Some of it comes back when I see old clips or great articles like this one.
