Santana Slated To Throw 90-95 Pitches Today Against Cards
Johan Santana takes the mound today in a 1:05 PM start against the St. Louis Cardinals. Manager Terry Collins said Santana is expected to throw 90-95 pitches in the game.
In his last start, also against the Cardinals, Santana threw 69 pitches, 48 of them for strikes in what was his best pitched game of the spring. His impressive performance prompted Collins to say this:
“There are some minor steps, there are some baby steps and there are some giant steps. And today was a giant step forward.”
“Nobody’s come back from this operation,” Collins said. “We’re certainly hoping he’ll be the exception to that rule.”
Collins is confident that his ace will be ready come Opening Day. Another great performance by Johan today, and Collins might make it official.
Original Post 3/21
Johan Santana had a solid performance today in the Mets 2-1 loss against the Cardinals.
Santana tossed six strong innings and allowed just one run on six hits with a walk and six strikeouts. He threw 48 of his 69 pitches for strikes, effectively combining slider, changeup and fastball which was clocked in the 88-90 MPH range.
His performance today lowered his ERA to 3.38 for the Spring.
The Mets’ ace continues to impress and sometimes it even feels like he’s the healthiest person in camp, if you could believe that. Yesterday, Terry Collins said he feels Johan will be ready for Opening Day.
Santana is certainly one of the nicest surprises and best stories of the Spring for the Mets.

A nice surprise… I can’t remember what those look like.
If santana can actually do this in the regular season, the rotation might not be all that bad after all. Dickey is solid, and I expect Neise to have a big year. And Gee is looking better than last year.
also have to hope that both neise and Gee have gotten some of the learning curve out of the way, and won’t fade down the stretch (and don’t discount the impact of the nose job!).
Hey, if nothing else, the 1st half could be good if they continue the trend of strong starts and late fades!
I am leaving the #5 guy out of the discussion for now. Because I prefer not to think about him.
Seldom are there positive surprises after devastating injuries. This is one of those times.
I’m sure we all thought Johan would be the first identified as a DL candidate this spring.
So far, he’s proved all that rehab was worth it.
I read where he was hitting a little less on velocity today but if he remains healthy and takes the ball every 5th day, here’s hoping arm strength and stamina will improve a bit.
Meanwhile, anytime the offense would like to get going would be fine with me.
Give them time. they’re pacing themselves.
Six innings? Has any other Met pitcher done that yet this spring??
Dillon Gee went 5 – 2/3 last night and was very good
Don’t Mess with the Johan!
That could have been the best performance we will see all season, to say nothing of the longest
he should be the healthiest guy in camp…he hasn’t played in over a year
Great news, What really sucks to a certain extend is that if he pitches well throughout the season he’ll be traded for PTBN just to slash payroll and if he gets hurt or pitches poorly, we’d be stuck with him.. it’s kinda like a no win situation for us ..
I know you are skeptical about the FO (your boy Sandy!) spending any money, but if Santana does get traded (his salary) that wil free up a huge % of the payroll.. And odds are that will translate into investment in talent (whether locking up guys we have or getting more on the open market or via trade).
No way they are just going to keep lowering payroll without respending any of it.
so while the best option is Santana is the miracle man and comes back 100% what he used to be, and leads the Mets tot he playoffs, if they are going to be in 4th or 5th the next couple years anyway, Johan pitching well enough to be traded is much better than him just hanging around eating up payroll.
Stick, we’ve seen what we have done whenever we slashed payroll.. close to $60 million saved for this year, and we spent around $15… if that.. and please, don’t give me that garbage about being broke, sandy alderson has made it very clear he will not be signing FA to long term contracts or over $100 million.. Small market mentality in NY…
Is anyone concerned that Santana went from three games at 20 pitches to 1 game at 60 pitches (a 40 Pitch jump) and now propose he throw 90-95 pitches (another 30-35 pitch jump) in the very next game?
He’s pitching great no question…
He Feels great, and thats a good thing…
and while those things may have been early worries the real worry should be not pushing him too much too soon and putting undue stress on that capsule!
The worry was always would he push it too hard and reinjure that capsule because he’s one of those warrior 110% types.
And jumping from 20 -60 and 60-90+ just seems like they may be going just a bit too fast here, at least to me.
I wouldn’t mind seeing him back off and do a little extra work in the pen at 80-85%
Well I would just rather he pitched 90% for 30 games this season than 110% in only 5 because he reinjured that Capsule!
While it’s nice he is doing so well the real trophy at the end of the season is a Santana who pitched the entire year, stressed the capsule just enough to build it up so it’s stronger and no longer at risk, and pitched well enough to build on for 2013!
Even at 80% Santana is a guy who knows how to pitch to get batters out.
I’m less worried about him losing something than I am about re-injuring the capsule which puts next year at risk as well!
