That isn’t what you said. You said in franchise history, then you changed it to positional player. Then when I asked if he was better than Piazza and Hernandez you said best homegrown positional player…

Honestly, I would put Straw, Hernandez, Piazza, and Beltran ahead of him. Like I said, to me he and Wright are tied right now and it will depend on if Wright rebounds if he passes him or not.

By the way, what players in franchise history?
Not really in any order:
Seaver, Piazza, Hernandez, Strawberry, Alfonzo, Koosman, Doc, maybe Darling, Cone and Sid.
I would consider Reyes and Wright tied at this point pending what Wright does the rest of his tenure here.

what’s the criteria? Are you only looking at guys that came up through the system, or anyone that played with the team? If you had to be born and bred then it obviously cuts down the options.

I don’t think Jose was the best position player they ever had (and i assume you are not talking about pitchers) but it is certainly defensible as your opinion (if you had said Bruce Boisclair, then I would have called you nuts!)

Overall best players? Of the top of my head Wright, Darryl, Piazza, Beltran, Hernandez just from the 80′s on. And in a bit shorter window, Alfonso (highly underrated at his peak).

Maybe others from the earlier days (I am sure some people might argue Grote, and it was a different era).

Highly subjective question of course.

I’m shocked he said it, but i am not saying he’s wrong about it.. more of a bold prediction that can come to fruition.. Unlike you who right away rush to stats and talk nonsense.. if that’s what he believes so be it…

Seriously though, considering the Mets history you said best player in franchise history. Not best one we developed. You even said originally as not only position or pitcher but in the history of the team. That my friend is ignoring a lot of great players.

Honestly I don’t see Sandy giving David a long term (5+ years contract) for the same reason he wouldn’t Reyes. While Reyes was coming off his career best season you can’t say that you expect those numbers every year and that injury is not a concern. If David hits .300 25+HR 100 RBI this year are you confident in giving him the 5+ years? Not me. Luckily for the Mets unlike the Reyes situation they still have Wright locked up 2 more years in what SHOULD be his prime. No reason to do anything yet, just enjoy having what we hope is a solid 3B in his prime for two more years.

Had h come trough in the playoffs in 2006 and we would’ve won a championship, situation might’ve been different, but we have seen what contracts to 30+ year old players without the help of PED’s is doing to baseball franchises all over baseball.. this guy imo needs to have a HUGE season in order to attrack people again to think he’s an elite player.. he’s just an average 3B imo.. and with his back issues looing who knows how well he will play or even last.. Remember alfonso and joe crede? yeah…

I think that David will either be in NY long-term OR in LA playing for either the Angels or Dodgers by summer 2013. I could see some interesting trade proposals coming from either of those teams and both need a 3B.

LOL, he only needs 317 more Alex. So if he can average 25 HR a year it will only take him 13 more years. OK back to reality, he’s not getting 500 HR.

That being said some take their fanhood to the extreme and say things without recourse. You know like how you said a few times that Reyes was the best player in franchise history? When I called you on it of course you backed down but still people love their Mets players. Isn’t that OK?

500 HRs is going to be a real stretch. And the last 3 years have not been monster stats.

Baseball is actually a cruel business. ANd it is really about what you WILL do for me, not what you ONCE did for me (from a team perspective).

so if the FO doesn’t think he will be a top player or worth what some other team will give him, then put him in the HOF, hang a banner, put up a statue, but you don’t sign him to a long term, big $ deal out of sentimentality.

David Wright will be the Mets All-Time Leader on most offensive categories by the next 2 years .

He will also be a 500HR player , YOU DONT TRADE HIM YOU HEAR ME ?!? This men is our Franchise . He is still young and has monster stats so far . DONT LET HIM GO !!!
