Exactly. A couple of more guys get on and the story could be different. Hits would have been great. But as the Nationals showed, having more guys on base opens up more run-scoring opportunities. They had exactly the same number of RBI hits the Mets did but managed to score two more runs, both scoring on outs because of the base runners.

TRS86,

Now that is a debate worth listening too - Ralph and Keith disagreeing about how Wright's stance and swing should be. That's baseball. Having no idea whatsoever, my initial reaction would be to side with Ralph.

Could it be that Ralph was talking in terms of a power hitter and Keith in terms of a higher average?

Well all the RBI guys were sat early or did not play. It may be a different game if all the big boppers/the difference makers/the deal closers were left in the game but it's only ST.

A couple of CLUTCH hits and it doesn't matter if the Mets had only 12 baserunners. Big hits and RBIs in big spots are what make the story. That's what wins games and that's what makes a game a story - the RBI guys. The rest? They're just doing what you're supposed to do like any other sport but without the people who create the story, win the games, and are the difference makers - the big boppers - then they just sit there on base increasing their OBP.

No RBI guys? No wins

That's where Ralph and Keith get into it all the time. Keith keeps fussing at Wright to get rid of the upper cut and swing level. Ralph keeps saying keep the upper cut and stand with your right foot in the middle of the plate. Perhaps Jason needs to quit listening and do what he did to get where he was when he got the damn contract.

I liked what I saw, mostly. No one got hurt, which was most important, but I liked what the top of the lineup did when the starters were in, even though it was just a couple of PAs. It was mostly a bench vs. bench game, but it's real hard to win with only 12 base runners in 9 innings, no matter who's in there.

I agree Joey, Kiner knows hitting. It has been uncanny how Kiner has identified rookies who have turned out to be productive major leaguers. I wish someone could put together a compilation of Kiner talking about rookies throughout his years as a Met announcer.

While his colleagues at SNY were talking about how much better Bay looked at the plate last spring in St. Lucie, Ralph Kiner interjected that Bay was swinging the bat too level which would produce mostly soft line drives to the outfield or popups and that Jason thus needed to uppercut his swing more. If his plate approach is still the same, then we're in trouble. If he has gone back to his old batting stance, it will still be a matter of bat speed.

I will be most anxious to hear Ralph Kiner's comments over the next few weeks. I think his perspective will carry more weight than any mathematical formula or curve that also takes into account the reduced distances and heights in Citi Field. If Jason is still not swinging properly and/or turning the wrists quick enough to satisfy Ralph, then it wouldn't matter how much the Mets reduced the home run distances.

this early in ST just surviving the game in one piece is enough to ask for.

One thing though is Bay. I suspect it will be real apparent quickly when the season starts if he has anything left.
