Mets Opening Day Bullpen Getting Clearer
Adam Rubin of ESPN New York projects the Mets Opening Day bullpen as follows:
- Frank Francisco
- Jon Rauch
- Ramon Ramirez
- Manny Acosta
- Bobby Parnell
- Miguel Batista
- Garrett Olson or Josh Edgin
He says Miguel Batista is a “pretty solid” bet for making the Opening Day roster, and that D.J. Carrasco is likely to start the season on the disabled list because of a twisted ankle.
One more thing of note regarding Batista:
The Mets must make a decision on Batista no later than five days prior to Opening Day.New CBA rules dictate that Mets must keep him on the 25-man roster, pay him $100,000 to go to the minor leagues, or they must grant him free agency.
Prospect Josh Edgin continues to impress with 6.2 scoreless innings allowing just two hits while striking out eight and walking two.
Garrett Olson is also having a solid spring posting a 1.59 ERA in 5.2 innings.

So how does that work with Batista? If they send him down later on in the season they still are on the hook for $100,000? They don’t have to keep him on the 25 man all season like a Rule V guy, right?
pretty sure no. Just has to be on the ML roster on that date, or he has to get the bonus for going down. After that, should just follow the normal waiver rules, etc.
Batista? That isn’t likely to work out for very long. But maybe he can give them something.
I also like the idea of Edgin if he keeps pitching well. Young hard throwers instead of ‘crafty” journeymen sounds like more fun to watch.
But, even if Olsen and Batista are there opening day, I fully well expect guys out of the minors (like Edgin) with power arms to replace them along the way.
Twisted ankle……….LoL. Hope fully the day he’s scheduled to return he twists the other one.
I know a long man is valuable, but I think the better option is Edgin and Olson and cutting Batista. Better to have two lefties.
