The underpinnings of the Phillie’s philosophy are 3-5 tool high bust ratio potential MVP candidate types drafted out of HS. The anthysis of sabermetric selections and their prospects of this sort are the one’s that have helped nab some of their current rotation showing just how well thought of these guys are when they show something in the minors.

Anthony Gose and Jonathon Singleton for example. Dominick Brown is a guy they still have around that fits this profile as does Larry Green their 1st round selection in 2011 in the supplementary round (from losing Werth)

Riskier for sure than the Ike Davis/Reece Havens type pick but a potential big time producer for 10 years or more when they do hit. Not saying Ike isn’t but these types of off the chart athletic outfielders are 5 tool guys that will retain all their skills for 10 years or more if they make it up here and that includes speed to burn in the OF and basepaths.

Amaro and the Phillies orginazation was just an example of a team that doesn’t use advanced stats – No one said he was the “god of GM’s”

It was a counter point to the people saying that all succesful teams use sabermetrics.

Also goes back to the debate here the past couple of months on some believing Amaro is akin to the god of GMs – you know, since he doesn’t use advanced stats. If they don’t, don’t know how Hu passed the ‘eye’ test for him.

Hu is like taking an emergency hack with two strikes. If he can just handle things defensively until Utley’s back they won’t fall out of it.

Thing is that Phillies team offensively is not good right now. I am not sure that they can overcome how bad that team is offensively without Howard, Utley and with an ailing Placebo. They better pitch the lights out.

Regarding Hu, just like Murph’s glove wouldn’t stick out like a sore thumb on teams with otherwise all around good fielding, Hu’s limited value only as a defensive replacement and pinch runner could take up a slot on the roster for other clubs deeper in talent than with the Mets in which his role would have been expected to be a bit bigger.

Can’t argue with you about the Phillies pitching. Their SP is still elite. It’s their offense that’s going to suffer.

I know you picked the Marlins but do you see them winning the division or getting in as a WC?
Honestly, I just don’t see the Marlins going from last place to first this year.

I too think the Phillies could take step back and I am not ready to predict anyone in the NL East. All 4 of those teams are good but not great IMO. They all have questions that have to be answered and if that answer turns out positive they could become great.

As for the Phillies, I understand what you are saying about their pitching keeping them in games but lets also remember that their rotation is not as deep this year as last year and neither is their pen. Their defense actually stands to be worse than last year and their offense could easily be the worst in the division if not then only bailed out based on where they play. Losing Utley and Howard and replacing at least one of them with a defense only guy and another one with a mediocre bat at best will hurt them tremendously.

Listen, as i have said many times, i do not think the phillies will be as good this year.. But their pitching will keep them in most games, and as weak as the NL is in terms of offensive teams they can win a lot of 3-2 4-3 type games..
As i have said here many times, THE MARLINS will be the winners when all is said and done..

Alex they don’t need him in CASE of an emergency they need him BECAUSE it is an emergency. They are in a bind. They did a terrible job of preparing the team to be without Utley. They knew that he could be out a significant amount time and their answer was?

Do you remember how the Mets even obtained Hu? He was brought in for the Cedeno role, nothing more.

That’s what I ask Bay. How many games do you expect him to cost us, how many runs? How many games do you expect him to win for us offensively, how many runs produced? Again, comparing it to the alternative which is uh…. who? At least it’s not Hu. He’s in Philly.

OK so lets think about this, how many errors or runs do you expect Murphy to cost us? How many runs do you expect him to produce? You yourself have said he may be the most clutch bat in the lineup. So assuming that you can’t have your wish, which you can’t, and Wright is at 3B and there is no Jose Reyes what do you do? Wright is not being traded YET so do you bench Murphy for a better fielding 2B and take that bat out of the lineup?

Well what do u think we should do with Murph have him sit the bench or trade him for a couple of prospects. If so, you will be looking at a 100 loss season in my opinion. Murph still provides stability in the lineup that we are in dyer need of.
