Lucas Duda Out With Back Stiffness, Joins Growing List Of Ailing Mets
Lucas Duda will not be making the trip to Lake Buena Vista where the Mets will take on the Braves later this afternoon. According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, Duda is suffering from back stiffness, and may miss a few games.
The list of Mets that are ailing this spring continues to grow. Other players currently nursing injuries include:
Andres Torres: Scratched from lineup with Right Hip Soreness, will miss a few days.
Pedro Beato: Was removed from game and MRI revealed Sore Rotator Cuff in his left shoulder. Out for a few days.
Jenry Mejia: Continues to recover from Tommy John Surgery.
David Wright: Hasn’t been cleared to play in any games yet because of Rib Cage Soreness
Ike Davis: Was diagnosed with Valley Fever, but will be monitored as he continues to play games.
Scott Hairston: Is out indefinitely with a Left Oblique Strain which has manager Terry Collins very ”concerned” and “worried”.
Robert Carson: Suffered an Intercostal Strain and is out indefinitely.
Reese Havens: Continues to deal with Back Pain even after surgery to remove part of his rib was supposed to help him.

I quit. If Duda is actually hurt I am just going to pack it in and give up.
When I saw this report, this is the only thing that came to mind…
http://youtu.be/YzE4ILFgHzo
And the list keeps growing.
Right now though, doesn’t look like anything serious to those expecting to be on the starting 25. Well, maybe Hairston. He might be shelved for a month.
I’d like to know the difference between oblique and rib cage problems. From what I’m seeing, some have been describing Wright’s problem as an oblique as well.
Is losing Hairston for any time really considered serious? I mean this is Scot Hairston we’re talking about. I’m so glad we let Pride and F-Mart go to make room on the roster for this guy.
No, not really. I just meant serious as in the only one so far of the starting 25 that considering this list, might not be ready for opening day.
Still have my fingers crossed for Santana.
Hairston’s important in that Kirk gets rushed if he can’t go. That means instead of coming up mid June with 100 AB’s under his belt he sits around on the bench instead and in exchange for him being up here in April and May he gets to go FA a year earlier than he would have if he came up in June. That’s a pretty big deal in that his 31 year old season should be pretty damn productive especially in comparison to two months of his sitting on the bench at 25.
Fern’s a DH at this point. We already have that position covered but I really thought one more sink or swim year would have been a good idea but if he can’t play the OF………
Pridie was let go in order to add a prospect to the 40 so we wouldn’t lose him for nothing in the rule 5 draft. As it was we did lose one guy Rymer Cruz and would have almost certainly lost Armando Rodriguez, Wilmer Flores, Juan Lagares or Robert Carson who all have the ability to be anywhere from average big leaguers to really good ones for 6-10 years.
Pride wasn’t going to be able to do that for us and we have at the very least a Pridie clone in AA in den Dekker and as a LH hitting CFer Pridie’s AB’s will be going to Kirk whenever he does come up so not having Pridie here only cost us 2 months of him and saves a prospect but could cost us a year of Kirk when he’s at his best.
Pridie was also a waiver wire/FA pickup of some kind (I forget exactly what his situation was). But bottom line, Mets picked him up off of some scrap heap.
So, if caught short (and assuming Baxter/Loewan can’t fill the same role) they will likely just get another guy like him. Aging MiL guys (often caught in that AAAA limbo) are always available.
I hope that Kirk does not come up early and if he does, it is only because he flat out earned the job and is coming in to start the rest of the year.
Sounds like a perfect situation to keep him down in AAA just long enough to get dialed in (get the rust off after last year), and pass that threshold date where it won’t start his FA clock a year earlier.
Agree completely Stick.
Hopefully Torres is healthy and playing well and there’s no need for another CFer until a day off at the end of May or so.
Off Topic: T Agee, came across this and thought you’d find it of interest.

Thanks for the link MNJ. It appears from some of the comments that Ismeal Cruz is no longer with the Mets judging by some of the comments. I had no idea. He’s done some good things with the IFA’s.
Pridie just got suspended 50 games for violating the minor league drug policy.
that’s what you do I guess when you see your last shot slipping away. Bummer, he seemed like a hard working dude.
There are a number of muscles that make up the general ribcage area with the obliques being one of them. The obliques are mostly around the abdominal area (basically border the abdominal muscles), extending a bit upwards There are several other muscles in the rib cage area as well. With the generic “rib cage soreness” diagnosis Wright’s injury could be an oblique one as well, but it could be to one of the other muscles. The way they are describing it it seems like his injury is higher up above the oblique, but I don’t know.
Either way I think the prognosis is similar and depends on the severity of the injury. It’s all the twisting and torque involved in swinging a bat in particular that can make those injuries to the core obliques, back, ribs, abs, difficult to deal with and easy to aggravate.
Listening to Keith yesterday during the game. He attributes it to all the situps they’re doing now for training. ‘I never did a sit up in my life’, he said. LOL…..he recommends they all give them up. Said they hardly ever heard of oblique injuries back in his day.
so instead of all this working out, they should be in the clubhouse smoking and drinking beer, and occasionally a little something “extra”?

Keith said he never did a situp as a player. Sure enough he was slim, trim and fit. Now’s the time for Keith to do some work on his midsection. Has he looked in the mirror? Rusty Staub’s big belly girth is slowly being challenged.
Oh Gary, please pass another Krispy Kreme to Keith ….
Hey, Keith commented about the first televised game on WPIX this Sunday. Said he hasn’t received his WPIX shirt yet and he really needs it b/c he ordered a large. Said the X-lrg he wore last year is too big.
Keith is always entertaining on these broadcasts – LOL.
Seriously though, big difference between a middle aged guy being in baseball shape and a kid actually getting paid to play the game today.
Not sure what the difference might be from back in Keith’s day compared to today but most of those guys didn’t keep in shape over the winter. They’d show up for ST not-in-the-best-shape-of-their-life.
I believe it comes down to how much HGH you have ingested or how many visits you had with Tiger Woods blood spinning Canadian doctor.
For a team that needs everything to go right to have any chance, this isn’t looking good. I know these are “minor” issues, but odds are…at least one of these minor issues will be serious.
Now I’m convinced the Mets are living Bill Murray’s “Groundhog Day” . Dejavu 2009 anyone? What’s next? RA Dickey and Josh Thole collide chasing a pop up and both end up DL’d? Maybe Frank Francisco suffers a knee injury covering 1B during pitchers fielding practice. Oh, I know, Jon Rauch forgets to duck going down the steps going to the clubhouse and gives himself a concussion. Geez, when will the injuries cease for the Mets?
typical Mets will be everyone getting hurt in ST, except for the 2 guys coming off major injuries (santana and Ike), and the 1 guy you would not mind getting hurt (Bay).
I’m not totally worried about these injuries yet. They for the most part seem to be regular spring injuries that pop up. These guys weren’t swinging bats etc last month, this is why they have Spring Training.
Granted for the Mets it seems a sore back turns into a broken back, but I think the reality is likely these are just small blips on the injury radar based on camps just opening up.
Guys seriously this is nothing different from any other camp and nothing different from 10 years ago. The only difference is that now there is coverage 25 hours a day. Managers before would just make up the lineup and we would never even know if someone was tight or sore. They would just be getting their day off or allowing someone else to get AB’s. Remember how custom it is for veterans not to travel as well? They could always use that excuse before. Now with constant media pressure they actually let us know about all the minor issues.
Is it possible our season’s over before Spring Training is?
Yes, we will wake you up in October.
@DPLennon
Lucas Duda says the stiff back that scratched him from today’s Orlando trip is “not a big deal at all.” Says he’ll play tomorrow.
http://twitter.com/#!/DPLennon/statuses/178128092387225601
I guess now we wait to see if he is indeed in tomorrow’s lineup.
is this where the macro to insert the comments about “next stop is the 60 day DL and out for the year” is supposed to run?
Ha! More like a big street sign that says “Proceed with caution”.
of all the injuries listed, the only ones that actually look serious are Hairston, Beato and Havens. And the only one that really concerns me is Havens, because I have high hpoes for him. Hairston only to the extent that it might (as Agee surmises) cause them to rush Kirk.
Beato is more of a LT issue, so hopefully that does not amount to anything serious or permanent.
I got a hold of the Duda report from Met doctors and it reads:
Ooh eeh ooh ahah ting tang wallawalla bingbang
Ooh eeh ooh ahah ting tang wallawalla bingbang
That said I’m not too worried but I do feel that a guy with Duda’s frame and build is very proned to having future back issues!
6’4″ and 255Lbs frame carries a lot of momentum and puts a lot of stress on the spine!
Not saying it is a sure thing but when I see a guy that big one of the first things I think about is having him work out to build up those back muscles to handle all that stress!
Anything stop and think that for some of these listed are just typical ST issues that have been going on for ever, but now that we live in the age of 24 hour news and are inundated with people covering the Mets that every little thing is dissected?
This.
In comparison the Phils say Ryan Howard will wear a boot for at least another week. Utley is only taking BP and lil else and Brown’s thumb injury is not that serious. Yankees had a pitcher starin his ankle and Dontrelle Willis has arm soreness.
Welcome to MLB Spring Training.
Is that what they’re describing as Willis’ problem? Think he’s got like a 27.0 ERA for 2 outings so far. Last I read, they said he was ‘fatigued’. Fatigued? In ST?
Feel sorry for the D-Train. He had such promise.
story seems to change on dontrelle. Team doesn’t actually know at this point 9from what I read). He says he is ok, then not. Biceps hurt, then forearm. Not just tired (after 2 innings?)
I would not be surprised if thee was something physicially wrong in their but very possible that he just sucks now. in any case, i expect he will be getting released in the near future (I think he came in on a MiL deal?).
stick the fork in him, he is done.
Yeah, it’s a minor league deal.
I’d put him in the same category as Perez. Career likely over.
