F-Mart Humble After Nice Debut With Astros

Fernando Martinez had a smashing debut with the Astros today in their 10-1 victory over Stephen Strasburg and the Washington Nationals.

The former Met prospect doubled on the first pitch he saw as an Astro, but it was his second hit that had Astro fans buzzing as F-mart clobbered a towering three-run homer to left-center against a strong wind.

His line for the day was: 2-2, HR, 2B, BB, 3 RBI.

Martinez, 23, batted fifth and is fighting for a corner outfield spot with his new team.

“I need the opportunity to play a couple games here so they can see me and know how I play, how I run the bases and how I play in the outfield,” he said. “I feel very grateful for the good start.”

The Astros claimed the one-time phenom off waivers from the New York Mets this offseason.

  • I hope he doesnt come back and bite this organization in the Ass? All these Super GMS we have that let him go,for wait for it Nothing

    • Almost every Mets fan I know likes F-Mart. He’s a good guy. Now it’s time to put today’s game into perspective. F-Mart was a DH. He didn’t play a defensive position. He hit his homer off Tom Gorzelanny who had a terrible day.

But the Washington Post reporter noted that Gorzelanny “served up a three-run homer to Fernando Martinez, which … got a decisive amount of help from the stiff wind.”

Gorzelanny allowed a bases-loaded walk, uncorked a bases-loaded wild pitch and was just terrible. In his one inning, he gave up three hits, four BB, and 7 ER.

  • still seems odd the way the F Mart situation went down. Just seems like there must be something more to the picture than has been reported.

    • ohh i dunno, maybe it was just a terrible move by Sandy?

Of course that concept is completely incomprehensible to you. A bad move by Sandy? What’s that? What are you talking about?

Lost in Space robot – does not compute!

The thought of a bad move by Sandy? No way!!!!!

      • Slow down there speedy. Guy had one good game, in spring training. Let’s no go slapping current GMs on crosses quite yet.

        • actually NJTex,

Of course anything can happen and the kid could be cut even before ST ends. I understand that but my point to any was that he completely disregarded the possibility that it just may have been a bad move. Was it? We don’t know yet. That’s all it was. The guy is wondering how odd the situation went down and what it possibly could have been and I’m saying well maybe it was just a bad move/bad judgement. He won’t even take that into consideration, that’s all i was saying.

Never mind the other JACKA$$ who completely misunderstood what i said and he accuses ME of second guessing. t agee is a a JACKA$$, a well known SECOND GUESSING JACKA$$ and it’s funny how he picks me out and calls me a second guesser when i gave no opinion of the move. And as for that, I’m pretty sure at the time i did not think that F-Mart should’ve been cut so soon, I just thought he was too young to give up on – so there.

Now the guy that is the pathological, manipulator of facts who follows his own pathos will respond – watch. The guy is a complete loser who makes his mark here by reassessing moves years later – after the games have been played. And all of you know it too.

          • actually here are my recent comments regarding Fernando. This was after he was waived:

            “DaveUpstateNY January 27, 2012 at 5:04 pm
So they dump 1 “can’t miss 5 tool player” in Martinez and sign another in Tooey. Yup. Good move.

Actually I would prefer Fernando Martinez when you think about it. And they save money to boot. The just wasted even more money – but I’m going to get attacked for saying that.

That’s how it’s become around here.”

This was before he was waived:

“Bayonne Mets Fan November 3, 2011 at 5:32 pm
Does anybody know if Fernando Martinez is playing winter ball?”

I see NO second guessing, just shoulder shrugging.

No surprise as t agee LIES again and makes up his own stuff as he goes along. And I KNOW ALL YOU PEOPLE know he does that. Just go away dude, go sit a pub and second guess your life and everything you SHUDDA done to anybody who will listen.

You’re a phony. That’s the kindest thing i can say about you.

          • Bayonne….Dude…seriously. YOU calling ANYONE else a JACKA$$? Once again, my daily comedy fix for the day!! Thank you, and please keep up the GOOD work.

Ok, your turn. Go all internet tough guy on me! Please. I had a slow day and need the guffaws. Go.

      • Didn’t read anything from this guy when Fern was DFA’d, let alone before.

LOL the second guessing begins right after the 2nd AB of spring training.

Ah well, Chris Carter might still be available.

        • Carter signed in Japan… :(

      • I wasn’t happy when Martinez was cut because I don’t like giving up on a once-big-time prospect, especially when there should now be room for him to play for the big club on a daily or near-daily basis (at least unless he fails in a starting role); a “one last chance” situation.

I’d have to believe that there was something that triggered Sandy to cut him, whether it was an issue with F-Mart or just bad scouting/intel is the real unknown. Alderson has been here a little more than a year now, so I’d have to imagine he’s done his homework on F-Mart. That doesn’t mean his homework was CORRECT, it just means that he did it.

If F-Mart was cut because he’s constantly hurt (which is a fact, and there’s really no debating that), then the homework was correct, but cutting him can still turn out to be a bad move. If there was some off-the-field reason that Alderson released Martinez, then the homework and the move are correct, even if F-Mart works out elsewhere. If Martinez was cut for “lack of skill”, then the homework and the move were wrong.

I do not speak on behalf of “Sandy Apologists”, “Omar Diehards”, “SABR-heads”, “The Corre”, or anyone else, just me – a Mets fan from Long Island who grew up in Florida and lives in Mississippi.

  • This is going to hurt.

  • For gosh sake’s,this is only the beginning to ST…..give him at least 20 AB’s before something breaks!

    • odds are you are right, but there is a decent chance that the Astros get some value out of him (since he cost zippo) before he beaks down. If he does!

    • there is also a big difference between a HR in the first game of ST off a pitcher shaking the rust off, and doing the same thing against a guy like Halladay in a game that counts!

      • So does that mean I can write off that Reyes HR off Nolasco I saw today? :-)

  • He hit it into the wind not against it.

    • I thought it was hit into the wind, because if I am not mistaken F.P Santangelo, the announcer, said he thought it was a fly out. In any event he has a Spring homer.

  • 23 seems kind of young to give up on a prospect and let him go for nothing.

  • Good for him.
Not sure he’ll stay healthy enough to make it as a starter – his reputation precedes him.
Maybe his chronic injuries are behind him – arthritic knees aside – and he’ll have some success with the Astros.

  • I wonder how many Mets fans who called Fmart a bum the entire time he was in the minors will now pick him up as the championing of a way to get at Sandy?

Personally, I wish to wait and see. It may turn out to be a bad move for sure.

Keep in mind Thole’s SLG% was around .650 last year.

  • I like FMart. I hope he blossoms and earns a starting job somewhere in major league baseball.
As a LF/DH I can easily see him averaging 15 home runs 80 rbi 80+ runs scored on any major league team.

  • dont worry, the brilliant gm of the mets kept dj carrasco instead!

  • In 1966 I remember the Mets just got Dick Stuart from the Phillies and Dr. Strangeglove hit a home run his first time up in the Mets spring training opener. I got all excited then but am a little bit older now.

I don’t know if the Mets gave up on FMart too soon or not, but Sandy did. Though I disagree with most of the moves he has made as GM (although also thinking he was forced to) based on that pattern he would have certainly kept FMart for both reasons of finance and for rebuilding if he saw something in him. But if FMart does come through for Houston, it’s sort of a blow for sabremetrics if that is what Sandy used to help make his decision. If he didn’t, then it’s a blow for his eye on young talent. And if FMart fizzles, it shows Sandy was correct in his assessment.

So Fernando, you don’t realize how much of an importance your success or failure still is to us fans of the Mets. One faction is bound to be disappointed. :)

  • I am not thinking in terms of if the decision to let FMart go was good or bad rather I would just like to see this kid do well. How could you not root for him? drafted at 16 yrs old, comes to the USA doesn’t speak English, plays professional baseball 11 months out of the year for 5+ years.. and somehow also takes college courses and studies English.
Fernando Martinez is surely not a loser. I really wish people could recognize and appreciate someone scratching and crawling to reach the major leagues instead of .. well all that nonsense I read on here.

  • Seriously guys… One spring training game, relax… Fmart is an injury waiting to happen, dont cry over what MIGHT be a missed opportunity.

  • I truly think this F-Mart situation will be one of those things people point to 10 years down the line as one of those big blunders that cost us!

You don’t give up on a League minimum kid who is 22 in order to keep some 2Mil bullpen slouch who can’t get anyone out!

    • Yes, it would prove embarrasing to have FMart’s plaque near Nolan Ryan’s in Cooperstown with Sandy Alderson becoming the Jim Fregosi of the 21st century. :)

  • F-Mart had one big game and he’s gonna come back to haunt us? This is just laughable. When he injures himself again, can we go back to this article?

  • FMart humble after glorified batting practice.

If Pelf pitches a good game, can we start calling for the Cy Young award?
