Duda Goes Deep, Freeman Does It Twice In Mets Loss

Chris Schwinden started and subsequently got rocked today in a 7-5 defeat to the Braves.

Summary

It was a tough day for Chris Schwinden today, who could not finish the third inning and allowed 4 ER in just two and a third innings pitched. He looked fairly outmatched and struggled to hit his spots.

Schwinden started because the Mets did not want the Braves to get a good look at R.A. Dickey, who instead started a minor league game. Parnell and Edgin each threw (another) scoreless inning each today. They each hold a 0.00 Spring E.R.A. Olson allowed a run in 1.2 IP off a hit and a walk, and Rauch/Ramirez each got tagged for a HR by Freddie Freeman who killed the Mets today. Bourn did the damage against Schwinden with a 3-run shot.

The offense did show up today – with Duda taking opposing starter Buddy Caryle deep in the 2nd for a solo shot, and Wright, Valdespin, Turner, and Rottino each had an RBI each. Wright and Valdespin were credited with SAC Flies. Duda and Valdespin each had multiple hits today.

Valdespin picked up his third steal of the spring today and looked good overall. On the other hand, Ike Davis was 0-4 today with 3 K’s. Mike Baxter and Den Dekker each picked up a hit off the bench.

Error by Parnell today, his first of the spring on a pickoff, but he is still sporting that sparkling 0.00 E.R.A. One DP turned and 9 men LOB for the Mets offense today.

Goat Of The Game

Chris Schwinden who still might need a little work before he gets some consistent MLB time. I do believe in him, however.

Notes

R.A. Dickey shined in the above mentioned minor league intrasquad game – pitching 8 IP with 2 R allowed – I believe only one was earned. 105 pitches, 70 for strikes.

Overall, Garrett Olson looked pretty good again today yet Josh Edgin looked sharper. Still, color me hesistant to give that lefty spot to Edgin.

Valdespin saw some time in CF today again.

Rauch’s ER today gives him a Spring E.R.A. of 7.27 while Ramirez lives with a 6.75 E.R.A.

Wright played 5 Innings at 3B today coming back in his second straight game back. He was 0-2 with a Sacrifice Fly and RBI.

On Deck

It is the Nationals tomorrow in a 1:10 game with the Mets playing the part of the home team. Jon Niese will start for us.

  • I am already tired of this team and Spring Training is not even over yet. I can not tell you how awful and uninspiring this team is. There is no sparkplug or a leader. Is it possible that this team is this bad?

I used to love to watch them in Spring Training, it was the only time there was ever hope for the Mets. There is no hope for this team. They look dead!

I can’t wait for this team to get out of Florida because they really stink! I feel sorry for Met fans in N.Y. who have to put up with this crappy team for 6 months!

I can’t stand them already and its only six weeks! I really don’t blame you if you don’t go and watch this garbage!

  • Jordanny Valdespin should make this team and start at 2b but of course he won’t.
David Wright should be playing right field during his last 3.5 months as a Met before he is traded in July but of course he won’t.
Daniel Murphy should be starting at 3b but of course he won’t be.
Duda should be sent down to AAA to play every day and work out the kinks before being called up in July after Wright is traded. But of course he won’t.
    _______________________________________________________________________
Instead Valdspin will be playing at AAA while Murphy flounders like a fish out of water at 2b.
Instead Wirght continues to play-out hthe string as a Met at 3rd while Duda clods his way about in RF and continuing to be over-matched at the plate.
    This should be our lineup:
    CF Andres
    2b Valdespin
    3b Murphy
    1b Davis
    RF Wright
    Lf Bay
    C Thole
    SS Tejada
    P
    _____________________________________________________________________
    Instead we have this
    CF Andres
    2b Murphy
    3b Wright
    1b Davis
    LF Bay
    RF Duda
    C Thole
    SS Tejada
    P
    _____________________________________________________________________
    Which line-up is better defensively?
    Which Lineup is better offensively?

    • Ah, OK?

have you actually been paying attention? Duda overmatched at the plate?

And I am still working on the logic of sending down the guy that has been working in RF to get out the kinks, and replacing him with an IF that has never played out there.

I will say absolutely that Duda is going to generate more offense than Valdespin.

defensively, you downgrade at 3B, upgrade at 2B, and I have no clue what you are doing in RF.

      • Duda and Valdespin are 2 different types of offensive players.

That’s like saying …oh…..for example….Tony Perez will generate more offense than Davey Concepcion (who was also a good hitter). I mean…why? There’s no reason to compare the 2

this is just the new way to talk. I guess it’s a dialect of saber.

        • you missed the point again. He posted 2 lineups, swapping valdespin for Duda, and asked which would be better offensively. So he was specifically asking which player would bring more to the offense. And right now, based on performances and stats (not saber, whatever the hell that meant) the answer would have to be Duda.

though if you want to argue the point, a question like this is exactly why the saber people created them i the first place. As a way to compare different types of players in the only way that matters, how many wins they will get you.

    • whoa wait a second….Duda is not going down to AAA lol

But i agree – Valdespin, as annoying as it is to watch his body language, he should be the one being trained right now to work with Tejada. This whole Murphy thing is being mishandled right from the beginning w/this front office

    • Tejada
      Valdespin
      Murphy
      Davis
      Wright
      Duda
      Bay
      Thole
      Torres
      pitcher

      • jeez i’m all messed up tonight – i have 10 man lineup

        Tejada – SS
        Valdespin – 2B
        Davis – 1B
        Wright – 3B
        Duda – RF
        Bay – LF
        Thole – C
        Torres – CF

That’s what i would hope for while i would look to package Murphy or Wright in a deal…

    • Duda hits between 27-31 HR this year…and between 70-85 RBI
you are selling him waaaay short
i think he’s gonna alot like Adam Dunn

  • Lets try something: I am curious what people project Duda’s offensive 2012 numbers to be?
I see Duda in 2012 as a .260avg 15 HR 75 RBI 60 runs scored offering poor defense
I see Valdespan in 2012 .265avg 80 runs scored 25 SB good and getting better defensively
These are at best numbers, of course Valdespan would be beter off in AAA but why not have him up playing every day?

    • You’re selling Duda short. .270, 24-27 home runs, 85 RBI, 80 runs scored.

      • 24 homes runs? Are you serious? Beltran only hit 22 home runs last year with 80 rbi’s
Your saying that Duda is better offensively than Carlos Beltran?

        • “I can not tell you how awful and uninspiring this team is. There is no sparkplug or a leader. Is it possible that this team is this bad?

“I used to love to watch them in Spring Training, it was the only time there was ever hope for the Mets. There is no hope for this team. They look dead!”

          Hi Rich,

Though it’s too soon to tell, especially in spring training, but that was my concern too due to the rug being pulled out from under them last season while they had moved to within five games in the loss column in the wildcard. Many contest that they would not have made post-season anyway so ridding us of Beltran and KRod and getting Wheeler in return was the right move.

As many know, I disagree with this. Through mid-July the team had been playing inspired, heads up and intelligent baseball, never losing confidence in itself to come back in the late innings. Having the front office either give up on them or show a lack of confidence in their ability undermined all that good that Terry and his crew had accomplished. They began pressing, they began forgetting executing the fundamentals as they did, they stopped playing intelligent ball and we saw hardly a late inning come back the last two months of the year.

This is why it might prove, in the long-term to have been a deterrence to the team’s “rebuilding” by taking away the experience of playing in meaningful games and learning how feels to win instead of lose. It wouldn’t matter if they didn’t go all the way to October or even started to fade by labor day, the momentum from having a modest 84-78 winning season, in lieu of the awful 5-14 start to the season the momentum from 2011 would have easily carried onto 2012, with a returning Davis replacing the lost bat of Beltran and the three relievers signed by Sandy making up for the loss of KRod.

Not to mention not attempting to even re-sign Reyes. Even bigger is the kids’ knowledge that if they again have a good season and are close, the front office will again undermine it by trying to get rid of some high priced players having good seasons (Wright especially). What good is it knowing they might have the rug pulled from underneath them once again?

Therefore, can one blame them for looking dead and uninspired?

Right now this is all conjecture on everyone’s part. We will get to see a better picture as the season unfolds. Hope I’m wrong on this one, I really do.
Yes, everyone on the squad this year will hopefully put out 100% but it might very well be that this club becomes a team playing for individual accomplishments as it heads further into the season.

If this was a team of mostly veterans, then shipping off it’s top hitter and star closer for a top pitching prospect would have made sense. But this was and is a young team and nothing of what the Mets could possibly have accomplished last season and then carried over to this one was worth getting a Zach Wheeler. Not if they do indeed look confused and playing dead.

    • Just noticed your post. Tejada hitting lead off? Why? Granted Tejada isn’t having the bat knocked out of his hands anymore but he is not a good hitter. I don’t see Tejada having an obp north of .320% also Tejada is not even a .260 avg hitter at this point.
Also you would take Murphy out of the lineup. I see it this way, who is a better offensive player Daniel Murphy or Duda. Murphy. And how do we get Murphy into the lineup whule still play Valdspin? Murphy plays 3rd, Valdspin plays 2b Wright plays RF.

    • you are selling Duda way short (those are all significant drops from what he did last year in the 2nd half when he started playing regularly). And Valdespin you are probably optimistic on, especially while he is still working on mastering the strike zone.

DUda put up 10/50 with a .300+ BA last year in ~ 80 games after being called up for good 9as a regular). I don’t expect him to drop 50% across the board in a full season.

Beltran? Different hitter, but right now, yes Lucas probably will hit more HR if they were side by side.

  • Terry Collins told reporters he believes Duda will be a “dynamic talent,” saying:

“I think Lucas Duda is going to be a dynamic talent. Obviously, he is power supreme. I just believe he is getting very comfortable with the fact he is a major league player and he belongs here and he can hit here. He already has shown us he can hit lefties and hit righties, he can hit the ball out of the ballpark. What you’ve seen with some of his home runs is why I think the reconfiguration of Citi Field will be a big difference for him.”
    ———————————————————————————————————————-

I think Duda is staying in Majors for now.

    • I just don’t see it.
