He inherited Ordonez, Alfonzo, Agbayani, Hundley, Carl Everett, Mora, Rick Reed, Bobby Jones, Isringhausen, Payton, Preston Wilson, AJ Burnett, Lance Johnson, Bernard Gilkey, John Olerud, Endy Chavez, Dan Wheeler, Todd Pratt, Heath Bell, Alex Escobar, Terrence Long, Octavio Dotel, Corey Lydle, plenty of useful players and prospects as well as Bobby Valentine.

He also inherited a 38 M dollar payroll (16th) and a team already on pace to win 88 games.

He made a couple of salary dump type trades with Florida and Houston, traded away a whole boatload of prospects, signed a whole bunch of free agents and rode the work of others till it crested 2 1/2 years after he he arrived and facilitated it’s southern migration over the next 3 years, 82-80, 75-86, 66-95 by stripping the farm of everything worthwhile in order to acheive those results. Had he been here any longer is there any doubt Reyes and Wright would have been shipped out as well after all there are numerous reports about both them being offered around.

Basically he was successful at the things that the Media goes gaga about like the free agent and the salary dump deal or the boatload of prospect deal but they never consider the downside and either does the media influenced fan.

Those are the easiest deals to pull off and don’t take any creative skills to do so. They are first and foremost dependent on the owners wallet as is the draft (the special skill set) in which 15 out of 17 1st, 2nd or 3rd round picks were busts under Phillips unless you consider Heilman (1st round # 18) a hit. Then it’s 3 out of 17. Even Kazmir could be a question mark with Swisher, Hamels, Cain and Guthrie on the table, speaking of which Phillips didn’t even bother to sign some of Mcilvaine’s last draft class when he took over including Guthrie, Atkins and David De Jesus.

Regardless the Mets peaked 2 1/2 years after he took over, too short a time for a GM to have a major impact in acquiring and developing his own impact players without the benefit of the owners checkbook and with useful pieces already in place and useful prospects in the farm and room to significantly grow the payroll he did the things that are easy to do. The harder things he wasn’t able to do so when he ran out of prospects he had to start trading the free agents he signed and that led to Curly, Moe and Larry and 95 losses that Duquette had to clean up.

There is no reason to suggest that any GM given the same conditions couldn’t have done what Phillips did do well and there is every reason to think that just about every GM would have been able to do a better job at the things he wasn’t didn’t do well.

Maybe Sandy and his saber buddies will yuk it up with one-liners and mean-spirited graphics but the rest of us won’t be laughing at all. Sure I’ll laugh at things but it will be away from Mets baseball – the rest of you moneyball and saber worker bees can yuk it up while watching the Mets.

And, ya, it’ll be great since he’ll have so much more time to dedicate to his material!

I can’t wait to see how funny he is when the Mets are 15 games back in mid May and you can hear the crickets croaking in Shea 2!
