Was It a Good Idea for Sandy Alderson to Join Twitter?

Update:

Sandy Alderson continued to make light of the Mets’ money problems on his new Twitter account Friday.

“Bought 4 like-new tires at chop shop across from Citi,” the Mets GM wrote. “He threw in free wiper fluid. Better than [Zach] Wheeler deal!”

Original Post

As alot of you know by now, GM Sandy Alderson has officially joined Twitter.

I was reading Matt Cerrone’s response to Alderson joining the Twittersphere this morning, and I wanted to write this in response to his comments about Alderson.

In Cerrone’s response, he stated the following.

I think this is great. I don’t know him well, but I’ve talked to him enough to know he has a great sense of who he is and the realities facing the Mets, he is mostly understanding of media, and he has a very funny, dry sense of humor. From what I can gather, I wouldn’t expect him to have a lot of one-on-one interaction with Mets fans at first, nor do I expect a lot of Tweeting. Instead, I expect him to pepper comments here and there, at moments when he feels it is warranted. And why not? I mean, if reporters and fans can use social media to frame him and the team negatively (sometimes fairly, sometimes not), then he and the team should use those same channels to respond.

Matt is right on with his statement regarding the amount of tweeting Alderson will probably be doing. I don’t expect him to tweet much because of the negativity that the Mets fans have with this front office right now. I don’t expect him to do 1-on-1 conversations with fans either – like you see with Justin Turner and R.A Dickey. If that were to happen, we know how that would end up.

In response to the general question of whether or not it was a smart idea for Sandy Alderson to start tweeting; I don’t know if I would say it was a good idea for Alderson to join Twitter, I think it was smart, but at the same time I do think that because he’s not going to tweet a lot, the question of whether it was a smart idea or not won’t matter much at all.

After giving his thoughts about the idea of Alderson tweeting, Cerrone gives advice to the Front Office on getting on Twitter.

My advice: Let different members of the Front Office jump on from time to time to write and answer fan questions. For instance, have Paul DePodesta jump on and talk about the farm system, etc… In this day and age, especially considering how disconnected and frustrated Mets fans are feeling, I think it would be nice for us to have this level of occasional communication with the people trying to make the situation better.

I don’t know if Matt is talking about Paul DePodeesta and other members of the Mets front office getting their own Twitter accounts, or by just tweeting from the official Mets account, but in either case I don’t necessarily think its a bad thing.  I personally think they would be better off without their own accounts for the sake of the negativity and trolling, but then again it would be interesting to see how they would respond to fan questions about the day-to-day operations of the front office, and how they go about things.

What do you think?

  • I’m not entirely convinced it’s Sandy himself making these comments. Everything would have to pass through Horowitz first. Could be him, but could be anyone from Horowitz’s office.

    • From the GM himself: “Prepping for trip. Bought 4 like-new tires at chop shop across from Citi. He threw in free wiper fluid. Better than the Wheeler deal!”

of course, since you adore him you’d make up an excuse not to tarnish his legacy right?? pathetic, seriously, stop kissing his *** man, it’s getting real sad

      • Yeah? You were with him when he posted it?

      • Alex68 — Sometimes you convince me that you’re more gullible than I want to believe. People say things for a variety of reasons, which I hope you can understand and appreciate. Language is a tool. Some people use it better than others.

        • That comment fits you to the tee. Language is just a tool. The truth? Who cares. And Lord knows you’ve been able to use or copy and paste language “as a tool” here before

          • I’ve tolerated your snide, insecure postings a long time. You’re just you — nothing to brag about.

    • Ya, probably some intern or something

    • Alderson isn’t the only GM or executive of a team to have a twitter –actually not too uncommon:

-Mark Shapiro & Chris Antonetti of the Indians

-Brian Burke of the Toronto Maple Leafs

-Mark Cuban of the Dallas Mavs

-Jerry Jones of the Dallas Cowboys

-Daryl Morey of the Houston Rockets

That was through a quick glance on twitter, I’m sure there are others. My point is that although probably monitored to some extent, these guys have twitter accounts under their choice only. They carry a certain level of risk as seen with fines that guys like Ozzie Guillen & Chad Ochocino have gotten because of it, so an Ivy League grad like Alderson knows he has to be careful.

      • ya, but if I had to bet, I’d say Cuban is really the only guy who is actually running his account.

        • Jim Irsay of the Colts definitely runs his own Twitter

  • I think it’s a bad idea, he’ll get murder by true mets fans (Bayonne) on twitter about the poor job he’s been doing for the past 2 off seasons. also, i did not know cerrone is a front office consultant too.. he’s now giving advice to front office executive who are ivy leaguers!?!? wow..

    • True Mets fans? So, true Mets fans have to be so full of bile and blind hate that the only way they can express themselves is to carry on like a spider monkey on crack?

And do you know how twitter works? It has a block feature. Besides, what are the likes of Bayonne going to say that they don’t already say over and over and over…? All they will do is provide more fodder for people that make fun of them.

But, you’ll be here to congratulate him on “sticking it to Sandy” or some other such nonsense.

    • Right Alex,

Real baseball fans root for their teams AHEAD of whoever is the GM. My favorite GM in Mets history is Steve Phillips but would I bend over backwards and worship everything he does? Of course not. If he came back I would be happy but it ends there. The next thing would be to see the moves he makes and if they help they team win. If he was bombing than I’d be on his case too.

Sandy is BOMBING so far and his androids are marching like the North Korean Army in complete solidarity no matter how bad his moves are. That’s the difference. And it’s all because of 2 common denominators – they all like moneyball and sabermetrics.

      That’s it.

      • You should put up more posts like this. they make you seem like less of an egotistical raving lunatic who has no concept of tact or civility

      • If Phillips came back here Petey Pete could get all his prospect interviews done in a half hour.

      • 1999 Wild Card winners
        2000 appearance in Wild Series

        Gotta give to get.

And EVERYBODY here enjoyed and would not take it back for ANYTHING so don’t BS me.

no second guessing if it doesn’t work. That’s the way it goes.

        • His success was based on what previous GM’s had provided both for trades and for the Mets and other than salary dumps (which apparently you don’t consider to be trades) and prospects for marginal or washed up retreads he had nothing.

He inherited Ordonez, Alfonzo, Agbayani, Hundley, Carl Everett, Mora, Rick Reed, Bobby Jones, Isringhausen, Payton, Preston Wilson, AJ Burnett, Lance Johnson, Bernard Gilkey, John Olerud, Endy Chavez, Dan Wheeler, Todd Pratt, Heath Bell, Alex Escobar, Terrence Long, Octavio Dotel, Corey Lydle, plenty of useful players and prospects as well as Bobby Valentine.

He also inherited a 38 M dollar payroll (16th) and a team already on pace to win 88 games.

He made a couple of salary dump type trades with Florida and Houston, traded away a whole boatload of prospects, signed a whole bunch of free agents and rode the work of others till it crested 2 1/2 years after he he arrived and facilitated it’s southern migration over the next 3 years, 82-80, 75-86, 66-95 by stripping the farm of everything worthwhile in order to acheive those results. Had he been here any longer is there any doubt Reyes and Wright would have been shipped out as well after all there are numerous reports about both them being offered around.

Basically he was successful at the things that the Media goes gaga about like the free agent and the salary dump deal or the boatload of prospect deal but they never consider the downside and either does the media influenced fan.

Those are the easiest deals to pull off and don’t take any creative skills to do so. They are first and foremost dependent on the owners wallet as is the draft (the special skill set) in which 15 out of 17 1st, 2nd or 3rd round picks were busts under Phillips unless you consider Heilman (1st round # 18) a hit. Then it’s 3 out of 17. Even Kazmir could be a question mark with Swisher, Hamels, Cain and Guthrie on the table, speaking of which Phillips didn’t even bother to sign some of Mcilvaine’s last draft class when he took over including Guthrie, Atkins and David De Jesus.

he was also the farm director when it was decided to be a good idea for Generation K to put 200 innings on their arms in the minors.

Regardless the Mets peaked 2 1/2 years after he took over, too short a time for a GM to have a major impact in acquiring and developing his own impact players without the benefit of the owners checkbook and with useful pieces already in place and useful prospects in the farm and room to significantly grow the payroll he did the things that are easy to do. The harder things he wasn’t able to do so when he ran out of prospects he had to start trading the free agents he signed and that led to Curly, Moe and Larry and 95 losses that Duquette had to clean up.

There is no reason to suggest that any GM given the same conditions couldn’t have done what Phillips did do well and there is every reason to think that just about every GM would have been able to do a better job at the things he wasn’t didn’t do well.

          • i knew this nonsense was coming from Mr. Pathos.

            Insane.

        • And there is hardly a met Fan anywhere on the planet that is “wouldn’t take back losing a World Series to the NYY for anything.”

Jeez don’t you ever aspire to do more than just get there?

          • dude, you’re a sick person – if u want to view it that way that’s your prerogative

      • Well if that’s true then why do you spend every day saying the same thing about how much hate you have for this GM and are hoping they fail. You are the epitome of second guessing (something you call others out for), you haven’t seen one pitch, but you know how bad these players are going to be that he acquires.

You and your small like clique of school girls hate SA more then you like being a NY Mets fan – which makes you the worst kind of fan, not a true fan.

        Steve Phillips? ’nuff said………hahahahahahah

    • “he’ll get murder by true mets fans (Bayonne)”

      HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

      *wipes tears from eyes*

I haven’t been on here for a while, but damn, I needed a good laugh today. I knew I’d get it here.

      • Welcome back.

      • you want laughs around here? Give us some of those classic Hitman trade proposals

        • Disclaimer: Before I begin, I’d like to say RIP Whitney Houston :’( One of the greatest voices of our time has left this world. I know this is a “Mets site”, but it saddens me to see yet ANOTHER great talent be another casualty of drugs. Lost WAY too many of them over the last 50 years. Haven’t been this shaken up about someone’s death since MJ passed.

          Without further ado…

          @Xtreem: Thanks bro.

@Bayonne: Well, if it isn’t my old friend Randall. Good to see you respond to me so quickly like I expected. Sorry I didn’t reply so soon but you know, I have things to do on my Saturday nights…something you can never say. Now then, you say my classic trade proposals are a good laugh? Come now. I’m gonna give you the floor. You are the king of comedy around here. After all, you are the one who…

-wanted 17 game LOSER Kevin Millwood in the Mets rotation
-thinks Steve Phillips is the greatest Mets GM ever (Cashen>>>>Phillips)
-Anyone that was part of the 99-00 Mets, even if he was nothing significant like say, Jason Tyner, was such a key player (LOL)
-wants/thinks that Jorge Cantu would be better than David Wright as our 3rd baseman, even though Cantu is defensively terrible at EVERY infield position he ever played. Is he even employed?

The fact that you are labeled a “true mets fan” is an insult to real fans like yourstruly. It saddens me that you are still a sad little man living in a shithole state that’s only a bigger douche/joke of a Mets fan as your governor. Isn’t being the biggest laughingstock in the entire Mets blogoshere bad enough? You make yourself out to be a horses’s ass the more
you post? Why don’t you just go on Twitter and curse out beat writers and fans who don’t have the same 10 cent brain you do? Even better, how about you get out of the house for a change? Run along. Shoo.

  • Don’t they already turn over the official Mets account to players and such from time to time?

  • I don’t think it matters one way or the other. I have no problem with it.

I highly doubt SA will read most of the comments coming into him. Someone else will be weeding through that for him.

If the only thing we had to worry about as we head into ST and the season was whether or not our GM had a twitter account we’d be in great shape.

  • I think its fine… honestly if people cannot have any sense of humor then what is the point? If you as a fan take baseball so serious that you can’t handle Alderson on twitter then the issue isn’t the Mets performance.

Also, I really wish DePo started his blog again. He used to blog while with SD about the draft, farm prospects etc.

  • Maybe he can pluck some pitchers off the waiver wire using twitter!

I can’t wait to see how funny he is when the Mets are 15 games back in mid May and you can hear the crickets croaking in Shea 2!

    • he already DM’d Kenny Powers.

And, ya, it’ll be great since he’ll have so much more time to dedicate to his material!

    • he’ll make jokes and all kinds of funnies just like his brethren over at Disgraceful Avenue thinking all Mets fans will have time to yuk it up while the team is being swallowed up in quick sand and part of the reason for that is his AWFUL leadership/moves/lack of regard for fan enthusiasm since he was hired.

Maybe Sandy and his saber buddies will yuk it up with one-liners and mean-spirited graphics but the rest of us won’t be laughing at all. Sure I’ll laugh at things but it will be away from Mets baseball – the rest of you moneyball and saber worker bees can yuk it up while watching the Mets.

      • Actually, I’m waiting for him to make jokes and give us math problems.

        • Maybe he can give us raw couting stats and ask us to calculate the wOBA.

  • If it’s such a big deal, I find it funny that he got so many followers in a couple of days. Do you really think he’s going to be sending out messages every 5 mins?

Sense of humor find one, then after that you make even find a life people.

  • I must have missed when Sandy tried to trade David Wright for Jose Cruz, Jr. Or had sexual harrassment allegations against him. Or a problem with pot in the clubhouse. Or open hostility against his manager.

So those are acceptable, but a couple of jokes in a Twitter account draw your ire?

I sure do love revisionist history.
