But if you have seen the arguments you know that when those guys make a point (Not Tag who you replied to but Xtreem) they will use OBP and dismiss any other traditional stats as PASSE and Antiquated!

SO when you argue with those guys it makes a TON of sense to use the stats they hold so dear against them when they finally decide to like some other player without reason or consistency in their own beliefs!

The GM’s primary duties are evaluating talent GOING FORWARD in Major League, minor league and amateur ball and then correctly weighing and balancing that evaluation between present and future.

The reason we have such chronic shortfalls in talent every year is something that has to be examined or we’ll never correct it.

Steve Phillips forking over six first and second round picks and busting on 15 out of 17 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks as well continues to plague this franchise to this very day.

Imagine if Phillips all the way back in 1999 had selected Brian Roberts, Brandon Phillips, Carl Crawford or John Lackey. How would that have changed things for Minaya? Those guys would have played much better and would have at the very least been great trade prospects or we’d have just recently received two draft picks for losing them and most likely would have not made yet another crippling free agent signing.

Imagine if Phillips had considered putting the future ahead of the present back in 2002 and not signed David Weathers (cost a 2nd round pick) and instead drafted Jon Lester, Brian McCann or curtis Granderson. How would that have changed things for us back to 2006 – the present and they could have then been extended or let go for two more top picks. As it was Weathers salary got dumped for Richard Hildago. That same off season we spent a #3 pick on Roger Cedeno as well.

The following year (2003) it was Cliff Floyd for a #2. (Could have been Scott Baker or Andre Either) How would one of those guys have affected the past and on into the future? Our 3rd rounder went for Glavine and when you think about it was just pure incredible good fortune that Atlanta gave us their #1 for a 42 year old Tom Glavine or we wouldn’t have Ike here right now.

The kind of top talent in their prime and good on both sides of the ball player like Ike Davis is the exact kind of guy we’ve been losing out on by signing guys like Zeile, Weathers, Cedeno and Appier (who cost us a #1 pick and was deftly traded for Mo Vaughn) Now what exactly in Appier’s last 3 years looked like he was worth 4 yrs 22 M? and a #1 draft choice?

When you come right down to it all you need is 20 guys with top talent with intersecting primes a free agent or two and a couple intelligent fillers and some AAA depth and you can compete for an extended period of time and have a reasonable chance to win a world Series without crashing to 66-95 like the 2003 Mets did a couple of years after these “moves.”

This has nothing to do with people reviewing their life in a pub, that’s just a nutty comment by a complete nut job with no actual ability to connect the dots to how we got where we are and why we had to rely on so many guys beyond their primes (backed by scrubs) in the very recent past and going on into the future.

And let me tell you another thing pal. As long as people keep blaming finances and not realizing that maybe Sandy IS doing a terrible job with his signings you will hear from me.
Never mind the fact that most of his signings have either been cut or been injured while other teams sign better players at prices the Mets can afford as well. What happened? I thought all his sabermetric analysis was supposed to find value? What happened? Now it’s Fred Wilpon and Bernie Madoff’s fault?

I am NOT second guessing. YOU are.

I say things like “Loduca could have called for another pitch” because that is what makes the difference between playoff/WS appearances, NOT the GM and NOT the owner.

I’m saying the differences happened in the many games the Mets HAD. They HAD their chances to have multiple World Series – the HAD the horses.

You’re saying, 20 years later, well if this guy and that guy were on the team things would have been different. I hope you understand now.

What if Jordany Valdespin lets a groundball go through his legs in a 2013 wild card tie breaker and we lose?

What if Harvey, after a good season, gives up 7 runs in the 1st inning in a crucial Sept 30th games and we lose a playoff berth?

What if Capt Kirk strikes out with the bases loaded in 2014 and blows our chances to get to the World Series?

You gonna blame Sandy and Fred Wilpon for that too?

If you are saying developed then Wright and Reyes move up to top 5 for sure. If you are saying best to play for the Mets? I think that Keith and Mike have something to say about that as well.

Again, I think you have to define the parameters of the discussion. Now anyone saying that Reyes is the greatest Mets player of all-time is just way too biased.

And reyes at least has a shot at the Hall…Something Strawberry doesn’t have unless the veterans committee vote him in after the oldhiemers sets in and everyone forgets the drug use that killed his career!

If you hadn’t noticed this will be Sandy’s second year!
And he already lost ground from where he started in the first year!

We lost our playoff shot due to our lack of starting pitching not our Pen!
And your going to find that out when all the work we put into the Pen this year makes not one bit of difference and we lose more games than last year!

1st question, best position players?

1) Strawberry, seriously hands down the best position player. Look at his numbers and what the Mets did while he was there.

Now before I complete my list you keep saying best player in franchise history/best position player in franchise history, are you saying best one the Mets developed?

Again NO mention of the over 30 blown saves in 08, yet you are a traditionalist and a “true” fan……………I have the Bayonne Bridge to sell you now too.
