Mets Announce Uniform Patch To Honor Gary Carter

The New York Mets today announced that the team will wear a patch to honor Gary Carter during the 2012 season. Carter died on Feb. 16 after a courageous battle against brain cancer.

The patch features a black home plate with “KID 8” in white lettering.  The patch will be worn on all Mets jerseys for the 2012 season, starting with the first spring training game on March 5.

  • Thank you Mets for special patch for the team to wear. They also need to place this on the grass behind home plate.

  • No matter what I have said about the Wilpons in the past, having enough thought to use the word “Kid” on the patch is a pure act of class.

    • Agreed the inclusion of Kid was a nice touch. Though do we know who’s idea was it to include it along with his #8?

  • Very classy design with the home plate, uniform number, and his nickname. Agree with you Joey D., this was very thoughtful on the Wilpons part.

  • Totally agree moose

  • Hope the put these Kid 8 jerseys with the 50 anniversary patch up for sale. I want one.

  • It is time for the fans to see that Fred Wilpon is and has always been a decent man. His G.M.s spent loads of his money over the years to bring the fans good baseball but unfortunately far too many fans only count the championship flags. The only question I have always pondered is their ties to the Dodgers and Ebbets Field. The look of the ballpark is fine. The tributes to Jackie Robinson too but overdone.

If you have been there since the beginning…you want to see more about our history, more about our stars. There should be a statue of Mr. Seaver,, knee scraping the ground. An alley that honors Rusty, and Koos…more stuff honoring our 69, 73 and 86 teams.

I know that they want to attract the younger fans..but if not for us older fans there would have been nothing special. The newer younger fans would have instead played with their IPODS and other toys.

We were the Faithful, the New Breed. We came with banners and we were Karl the “sign man”.

Nice to see that the “Kid ‘ gets this honor….More should be done to honor our own heroes!

    • Hi Alan,

It seems that we both come from the age of the original new breeders and because of that I can remember when going to a Met game didn’t make me feel like a second class citizen with the ownership appealing to elites. No blocked views, no restricted entrances, no escalators stopping prior to the top level or the fear a long trek to just get to the two sets of bathrooms up there and no parade of season ticket holders throwing out the first pitch as if being able to afford those seats makes them something special above the rest of us (yes, it’s a perk but I doubt its absence would have cost them to lose a single ticket holder).

And as an original new breeder I can remember when my dad (who was a cab driver working for a fleet) was able to take me to a game without worry that it would take too much out of his modest financial means. As long as there are enough willing to pay a few hundred dollars for a day at the game, those who are living today with the limited financial means my parents have don’t have to be considered in the equation. Won’t single out the Wilpons on this for this is prevalent in all sports but that only means they are part of the pack.

Still, “Kid” was a touch of class on their part and I respect them for that but it doesn’t change anything else or make them appear better in my eyes – and notice, I’m not referring to anything related to player decisions, just the consideration given to the average fan

  • The patch is awesome but I would also love to see the Mets organization retire #8 on Opening Day. Can’t think of a more fitting or deserving tribute to the Kid. Without him there’s no 86 Championship and all the incredible memories that Series holds for us fans.

  • I was always disappointed that MLB didn’t allow him into the hall as a Met. I fully understand that his numbers were mostly gotten as an Expo, but he would not have gotten the very deserved attention and respect had he not won the championship with the 86 team.

  • What a great way to honor Gary Carter, thank you for the great years you played for the Mets Gary, you were a great Met….
