Thank god another brutal, uneventful, lackluster offseason is over. Lets play some ball and pretend the last 5 months didnt happen. Lets go Mets!

it is going to be great to see all the off season improvements sandy made on the field and maybe the moves he made will allow him for the first time in 7 seasons as gm to finish above .500, o wait I forget the other teams in the nl east get better and once again sandy in his second off season as gm did nothing to make the team better but blow hot air onto the fan base and sign scrap heap and recycled players. sandy thanks for allowing this season of no hope, unless of course your jessep because championships don’t matter, citi field, the fan base and sny thank you for driving us away in record numbers.
Will, LMAO, the CORE as usual salute you, can i get your prediction for this ball club for this season? my over under for wins is at 69.. what’s yours?
74. also the avg fans per game going to citi this season, the number of times per day jessep says the mets and sandy make no mistakes and finally also the number of tvs tuned into sny to watch a game thanks to sandy and his magical off season of watching all the teams around him get better as he tweets about the fact it takes 3 goons to do his work.

When you have about 10 mil in the off season to spend on a team that has more needs than that 10 mil can address at the moment, I see that as less the fault of the current FO and more on ownership, finances and past mistakes.

this time of year is the most pos. time of season.there is still hope.then we start playing games and the truth comes out about how good are team is.if u have a neg. attitude towards an upcoming season it’s you’re right.i’ve been watching baseball for 30 years, u kinda can get an idea of what kind of team u have.it’s great baseball is back,the best sport there is, but c’mon do u really think this team is going to contend.our SP sucks,our defense is not particularly good and our baserunning stinks.yes our BP is improved and we will score some runs.if we can’t stop the other team from scoring what’s the point.as far as my fandom, i’ve a fan probably almost as long as you’ve been alive.i’ve went through 25 bad easons and 5good ones.us fans who have been around this team that long are the TRUE fans.staying loyal to this team(which has largely been a joke in this league) for that length of time earns us the right to voice our disgust when things are goin downhill again.first or last i will always follow this team, although it doesn’t mean i have to blindly buy into everything they say and do.let’s face it the wilpons have a tendency to make some questionable decisions.

I watch and talk baseball because I love it. I root for the Mets because I connect with them. I have no idea why someone would embrace so much misery over something that is a pastime. It’s grown men playing with a ball. It is here for our enjoyment. Don’t try and talk down to me because I refuse to forget that.
And you’ll get much farther with a Lobotomy because I’m sure there are government programs that get them employment they can handle when Mommy and Daddy can’t support them anymore!

Off Topic: Watching the Pujols press conference over at MLB.com and I am disappointed that there is none for Andres Torres. That’s just not right.

He’s a very nice guy. Haven’t you read all the posts and watched all the videos this Winter? He’s not a bum, just a lousy choice for lead-off hitter or everyday center fielder. I’m betting by May that both those decisions change.
He may not even be lead off come Opening Day. A lot will depend on Capt Kirk.
joe D i could care less whether he’s a nice guy or not, it seems that’s a theme around here, jose reyes was a GREAT GUY, and got a slapped in the face by this franchise and its GM, we need BALL PLAYERS in this club not a bunch of “nice guys”… no wonder this team was labeled SOFT by many other teams and players, and it starts with the soft spoken excuse maker of 3rd baseman.. i just hope we won’t have to see his face at all, but hey, sandy had a good day so who cares about winning anymore..

Stop blowing smoke out of your caboose. Wright had three 160 game seasons. Between the years of 2005-2010, Wright played more games than Reyes. In the years 2008-2010, Wright played in about 133 more games — more than 80% of a full 162 game season.
And Reyes had…..Did you look?

2005 the year Wright was no longer a Rookie and ended just before 2011 with a 100 Game BACK INJURY! Then added by taking out reyes Three healthy seasons and again didn’t count Wright 100 Game performance due to that same back injury!
The type of Injury that has ended WAY MORE Careers than Ham String Pulls have!

Since 2005 Wright has played 250 more games than Reyes 1037 compared to 790. That’s being generous. We can go back earlier and the difference is greater do to Reyes’s other leg injuries. Spin it all you want, you are still no where near the truth.
Metsie — I picked those seasons because they gave an overall view of time on the diamond, excluding Reyes last season during which he was playing for a new contract and Wright had a broken back. Cherry picking — no for me, yes for you. Give up your new contentious personality. It’s not persuasive.

I personally like BOTH Reyes and Wright in fact I have been complaining that both aren’t still together!
But you have to admit after all the bashing Reyes (Batting Champ Leadoff Hitter All Star) took from the bully bunch and all the jumping for joy that did when he signed elsewhere it is rather HYPOCRITICAL of them to take the guys who see Wright declining steadily since 2008 in numbers to task for noting it!
I’m sure you will have selective memory on all this but if you remembered fully all this Hate Wright stuff started when people made the case to get rid of Reyes and it was pointed out that Wright had been far more disappoining in the last few years than reyes has been!

anyway, if reyes had not disappeared completely in 07 and 08m, even with the porous pitching, they still likely win the extra couple of games to go to the playoffs.

guess you didn’t bother to read this post either. Wright was very good in 2007 and 2008 all year, and in September when the team was struggling he stepped up even more. Reyes folded. Where the hell are you coming up with Wright not performing when it counted at the end?

Delgado had bad first halves in both 2007 and 2008.
That didn’t have anything to do with us missing by one game? How about Wagner and Alou getting hurt? Schowenweiss? He was good? Castillo in 2008? Schneider too, his performance didn’t cost us? Heilman? Kunz?
Plenty of blame to go around but it all gets stuck on one guy. A guy who incidentally had 6 consecutive solid months both years and hit .352/.432/.602 in Sept ’07 and .340/.416/.577 in Sept ’08.
It’s called selective memory, agee. Everybody wearing a Met uniform had a hand in both choke jobs.
I think it’s an attempt to change peoples perceptions from what did happen to what didn’t happen.

That’s basicaly because since that infamous at bat when Wright left Murphy at 3rd in the 9th against the Cubs, he’s been bad insimilar situations since then and it’s gotten worse the last 2 years, so everybody blames him for the collapse.What gets lost in that is the number runs he drove in early in those games to put the team on top,only to have the starters and or relievers give it up. You can say that about the entire offense. They routinely shut down after the 6th inning. It wasn’t just Wright. Reyes on the other hand had his best year last year and that’s what people remember.Selective memory.

Part of it is the association of him with the collapses since everyone else was hiding after the game but that doesn’t explain it all. After 2008 Wright’s entire game fell apart so naturally you would assume he would be less likely in the clutch but I’m talking about an organized revisionism.
“Wright didn’t drive in a single run in the Marlin series.” type comment. When the reality is he only came up with a 3 runners on the whole series, all on 1B. Delgado came up with 6 guys on. Two of them on 2B and 1 on 3rd. One SAC fly and a few DP’s but not a word about him.

what gets my goat is the Yankees just signed Ibanez for 1.1 Mil 1 year deal.
He is meant to be their DH but Cashman said he was the choice because in case of injury he would give them enough glove to cover and extended period of time plus the bat!
So for twice the money we are getting less than half the bat!

Yeah their problem is they keep saying we are saving money and it’s a waste of money to spend a lot on a GOOD player but it seems just fine and dandy to waste the same amount on 5 players all because they can be easily dumped!

This past weekend I had a family member that was hit by a drunk driver and is in critical condition in the hospital and it has turned my families life upside down.

Thanks Alex – in 1997 I lost a friend too, and my last words were “Are you ok to get home” I live with that every day of my life, so since then I’ve been over the top about not Drinking and Driving, for this to happen again, really rocked me to say the least.

I actually think they want torres to be the 4th OF as soon as someone is ready for a shot in CF. So they need someone to share time out there, and serve as an occasional defensive caddy for Duda.

You want to pay twice that for defense feel free but in either case your still wasting 1.1 Mil that could have gotten you a lot more and More than that if you let Hairston play CF!

I thought we were tight on money why are we wasting it paying 2.7 Mil and 1.1 Mil for two guys together who don’t give you as many RBI HR or BA as Ibanez?
Metsie — I’ve found you to be an insightful analyst of the game and business of baseball. Recently with your incessant, repetitive posting, especially with your stated motivation, I’ve revisited my views. Anyway here is something you’ve said I can really identify with:

I’ve liked both of them too. Apparently we both do. My issues, however slight, are with Reyes’ last game and with what I call his posturing about his ‘departure period.’ I’m old school. I don’t believe morals, mores, and ethics are contextually determined. Unlike you, I thought Reyes pulling out of his game was poor form. It’s just my view and really Jose is no Ted Williams as a hitter or in his ethics. The allegations that other current players would do the same tells me two things:
1) Reyes isn’t the guy I thought he was.
2) Our world today, for a number of reasons beyond the scope of why Joe D. set up this site, just sucks. But the USA will bounce back after some of out sports and political role models depart the scene. It’s only a matter of time.
I also think the negotiation and signing process is more complex than many MMO posters have stated. My bottom line is that Jose and his agent are implicated in why he never got an offer. Personally if I were Sandy, and Jose acted as he did, I would have waited him out to confirm his intent. I would not have rushed into the signing period just because the press, Jose and his agent wanted it that way. No way, no how, would I have let Jose set the terms for the negotiations. He’s a young guy who has a lot to learn and he’s dealing with a lot of experience bean counters with green visors in the various front offices. He would have to have been a Pujols to pull off his caper. But he’s not so he couldn’t.
Regarding the guy from Jersey. There is much more apparently that you don’t know about but I’m not going to replay it for the third or fourth time. I will say he is a big problem when other commentators try to deal forthrightly and honestly. When I referenced a New York Times newspaper article written by a prominent sports writer within the past year (at that time), giving the date of publication and the writer, and he makes an accusation of falsifying or creating the facts, I conclude he’s a screwball. When I go over the details once or twice more, and he continues to act irrationally, then I have to conclude he is being dishonest or his elevator doesn’t go all the way to the top. I’m finished with him. BTW, I’ve had differences of opinion with other MMO commentators, but they were always treated just as opinions, unlike the guy you defended. He is one of a kind. Nothing personal, but there is nothing to work on getting an accord with him.
I’m just trying to fit in with the tone of everyone else’s posts Des!
Funny how people seem more concerned about telling a good poster he’s been bad but has no interest in telling bad posters to F Off!
And since it seems everyone has no prob;lems with those posts but have problems with mine I am just joining them and making posts as insightful as theirs until they go and reasonable conversation is possible again!
So I suggest if you really want my GOOD POSTS back spend the time your spending here on all these buttholes who are forcing me to post down to their level and You might be surprised at how quickly I can snap back to meet the challenge!

Metsie — You gave me a good chuckle reading your post. Anyway let me get this straight. With your reasoning, when you were in school, did you dumb down your work to fit in with the worst, dumbest guys in your class? Really, did you? Of course not. So why do it here? It really lowers your output. I’ll still read your stuff and typically not comment on it, but the old Metsie needs to return.
P.S.: Perhaps the chief reason you think you’re being singled out is that the difference in writing is most notable. Take this as a compliment and ignore me if you want.
Des, I’ve enjoyed your posts over these many years. Believe me when I tell you Metsie is being dragged into the abyss because his opinions are being mocked incessantly. If Ibanez was a CF than you have a easy argument, but he is not. Hopefully Capt Kirk can show more than Torres, and that shouldn’t be hard to do.

You can always move Bay to CF for the last few innings!

Metsie, I happen to think Hairston is good for our bench. He has some solid power and is very versatile defensively and above average.
I have much less problem with Hairston @ 1.1 mil than I have with Torres at 2.7 Mil! Maniac.
He at least has some pop!
Just saying if signing an old OF for bench help and getting the most for the money on a one year deal.
You have to wonder why Hairston was selected over Ibanez and/or why would they get Torres as part of the deal and not something else either cheaper or the same at another position.
If Kirk comes up do we really want to have Torres coming off the bench to hit?
Truth is Bench is not going to play a major role this year, Who are we pinch hitting for other than Thole and I hope sometimes Bay!
I really brought it up more to ask those who think saving money is such a high priority why it’s ok to waste money on these one year deals? Torres is Arb Eligible next season but I doubt highly he comes anywhere near netting compensation.
Hairston is fine but for the money you could have gotten every bit as good with the glove and much better bat to PH with!
Ibanez will be able to maximize what he’s good at in that little league field but at Citi? Good one. Surely you jest.
