Mets Sending Sizable Contingent To Gary Carter Memorial Service

A Mets spokesman announced that a sizable contigent will attend Gary Carter’s funeral on Friday evening in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

The group include Carter’s former teammates Wally Backman, Sid Fernandez, Keith Hernandez, Howard Johnson, Roger McDowell, Bobby Ojeda, Darryl Strawberry, Rusty Staub, Tim Teufel and Mookie Wilson, plus current players Jon Niese, Bobby Parnell, Josh Thole and David Wright. Alderson, Collins and assistant GM John Ricco also plan to attend.

The family’s website announced the service today, and requested in lieu of flowers, that a donation be made to The Gary Carter Foundation, 580 Village Blvd., Suite 315, West Palm Beach, FL, 33409.

Your donations will go to support the Autism Project of Palm Beach County, Hospice of Palm Beach County, and Palm Beach Atlantic University Baseball.

A memorial service to honor Gary Carter, the Hall of Fame catcher who died of brain cancer at 57 earlier this week, has been scheduled for Friday night in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Here’s a video produced by the Montreal Canadiens to honor Gary Carter. It was played prior to tonight’s game against the New Jersey Devils.

On June 1, 2012 Johan Santana officially became my favorite current Met! I'm a Queens native who grew up in the shadows of Big Shea. I was a huge Ron Darling, Dave Magadan and John Olerud fan. Honored to be a part of such a great site for Mets fans. Ya Gotta Believe!

  • Thanks for sharing that was very nice. The Mets better step up and do something wonderful for Gary Carter. I’m sure they will! LGM!

  • Are the Mets doing anything like this?

  • Montreal votes to name a street or place in Carter’s Honour.

  • Montreal did a great job with this tribute. I imagine there must’ve been a few kids hearts broken when Carter was traded to the Mets. There version of Tom Seaver. Carter hits HR #100,#200 against the Mets and #300 with the Mets. RIP Gary.

  • Dear Mr Wilpon ,Gary Carter’s life had one common thread that I think we all can agree on…Class. Please have a “Gary Carter Day” at citifield and retire number “8″. I don’t think there is one fan that would disagree with this and it might help to bring some “class” back !

  • I would think the Mets will be doing something this season to honor Gary Carter.
Probably haven’t decided and/or haven’t officially announced it yet.

  • Palm Beach Gardens is only about 40 miles from Port St. Lucie. It would be a wonderful gesture if the entire 40 man roster and coaches and old friends went to the funeral. One or two buses could make the trip down I-95 in an hour or so.

    • The way I understand it, the family is trying to keep it relatively low key. Something like you described might be a little more than they could handle.

  • I agree with Kelly –
The Mets had better do something big on their Opening Day for Gary.
He kept that 1986 team together.
