Not only was Shea to have been opened in 1963 but didn’t due to labor strikes and bad weather, but it was also going to be called ‘Flushing Meadows Stadium. As the first page of my old and delapadated copy of the 1962 yearbook said, the stadium was eventually to be domed.

And if one goes further back, one will see a resemblance of Shea and the new ballpark Walter O’Mally envisioned for Brooklyn back in 1956. There was talk of a dome for that one as well.
