GM Sandy Alderson Joins Twitter!
Mets GM Sandy Alderson has now joined twitter. You can follow him at @MetsGM.
The 64-year old has nearly 10,000 followers overnight after only posting two tweets. He now joins the likes of Justin Turner, Johan Santana and R.A. Dickey as Mets who are on twitter.
I personally think this is great. Now fans can directly contact Alderson and voice their opinion. Chances are he won’t respond to the majority of them, but being able to communicate with executives of your favorite team in general is a big plus. I wouldn’t expect him to tweet 15 times a day or something to that effect, but a comment here or there can be relied upon. It should be interesting to hear what he has to say throughout Spring Training and the 2012 season.
If you would like to follow any of our writers –myself included– you can check out this article Joe D. posted over the summer with most of the staff’s twitter names listed. You can follow me at @Clayton_Collier.

First of all, i must say the CORE was in full effect as bayonne took it to the GM of the new york mets.. second of all, whether you like him or not, that line “”Getting ready for Spring Training-Driving to FL but haven’t left yet. Big fundraiser tonight for gas money. Also exploring PAC contribution.” was funny as hell… i am still laughing my a** off..
But in reality it shows he doesn’t give a ****, he’s here collecting his paychecks, then going back into hybernation, and yet there’s people here still saying this man cares about his track record.. right…
Dude. He’s just shedding some light on a primarily dim situation. Knowing he could provide humor to an utmost critical situation of the team’s finances shows that he acknowledges it and is willing to take it on.. don’t take it as if he doesn’t care.
Lotus, so you think he cares whether he wins or loses with this team as the GM??
Why wouldn’t he? His reputation as a professional is at stake.
And he can crack jokes about the situation. There is nothing wrong with it. It is a bunch of grown men playing with a ball. If my dad can crack jokes before his heart surgery, Alderson can crack jokes about this.
gallows humor. some of the best kind.
marlin fans dissin’ our GM What else is new.
I doubt he would ever reply to a fan. He’ll tweet what Horowitz tells him he should.

Lennon has an article up on Newsday on the reason behind this move.

‘A sense of humor isn’t a prerequisite to be general manager of the Mets, but it certainly helps, and Sandy Alderson took his stand-up act to Twitter late Thursday afternoon in an effort to combat some of the “absurdity” circulating about the team’s money issues.’
“The genesis of this came earlier in the day when it was suggested that I was driving to Florida because the Mets couldn’t afford a plane ticket,” said Alderson, who created the account @MetsGM. “There were people on the Internet who actually believed that. So I just thought we’d point out the absurdity of all this by poking fun at the whole thing.”
‘Alderson’s ploy worked.’
‘So with 140 characters or less, Alderson was able to get his message across — and punch through some of the hysteria with a joke of his own. Speaking of absurdity, someone had even established a fake account for Buddy.’
“I think everything we do is viewed through the prism of our financial situation,” Alderson said, “and as a result, the most mundane things get embellished in a way that’s almost laughable.”
‘Alderson doesn’t plan on spending too much time on Twitter but will check in occasionally. He’s still learning the ropes at this point. “I’ll probably keep doing it for a while,” he said. “At least until I run out of material.”
Well here is something I don’t think anyone can argue against….
This is one decision Sandy will at some point REGRET making! LOL
Not really he will just have his staff block people just like Bayonne blocked me from following him.
Instead of barking at the guy, if even upset fans actually use some tact in their tweets, why wouldn’t he reply once in a while?
Well Sandy is good at one thing…PR!
And he knows that anything he replies will be in the papers and the Blogs about two minutes after he says it!
When he realizes this (if he doesn’t already) he will see the work involved in constructing replies and I guarantee Horowitz will be running that account before ST has ended! LOL
wonder what the over under on days he keeps that twitter handle are Metsie?
I’d say the safe bet may be before even pitchers and catchers report.
Somethings seem like a good idea at the time but this one…………?
I just don’t think it fits into that category.
Yeah someone said to him we need to use social networking to market ourselves and that will last just about as long as it takes for Sandy to be misquoted in the papers for something he tweeted! LOL
It’s not like he is going to be able to tweet anything he is doing unless he is incredibly dumb and wants every team in the league to know what he is doing…
It’s a marketing ploy because someone in Marketing told him he needed to. Horowitz will be running that account in no time flat! LOL
By the time is gets to Florida and sees someone even created a Twitter account for his dog buddy he will say “FML, Jay can you get a intern to run this thing”.
Per Rubin on Twitter:
Someone in the know just emailed me this speculation: AA shuffle scenarios… New Britain new NYM, Ottawa to be TOR, New Hampshire gets MIN
New Britain CT when I was growing up was home to the AA Red Sow and converted to Minnesota. The “Bee Hive” is a amazing old school minor league stadium, that would be awesome if the Mets ended up there.
I got to see a lot of Red Sox stars walk though there. One day I got a shattered bat from Butch Huskey. The bat had Nelson Liriano’s (former Royal) name engraved on it. He came out after the game and talked to me for 15 minutes about Nelson’s positive influence on him and how he game him a bunch of his bats. The placed is designed with real easy access to the players, it is just such a awesome facility.
Also too bad they won’t go to NH, I live only a 45min away from that stadium.
If this is true that’s be awesom!
I worked at NB when Mauer was there, Minnesota is such a class organzation but I live near the stadium now.
I’d go a ton more if they were NYM. I can practically walk to the stadium
Beehive. Wasn’t that the minor league team in “Major League III Back to the minors”?
What a dreadful movie. Just looked it up, they were the “South Carolina Buzz” and it was filmed in Charleston SC.
Buzz, that’s it and yes that movie sucked. I think the Twins were the ML team involved in that movie, that’s why when I saw Minnesota and Bee Hive I thought it was the same.
I’m only 20 minutes from the NB stadium. I wonder if they’ll still be the RockCats, or the New Britain Mets?
haha man the BeeHive is such dump. Can’t believe they used it as long as they did.
I think they’d still be RockCats because the Mets would not be partners with the club ownership and the RockCats are independently owned and have done quite a good job at branding themselves in the community. I doubt they’d want to change that to be honest.
Makes sense. Man, I’d be all over that.
Ditto. I think I once clocked it, their stadium is less than 3 mile walk one way for me.
That’s incredible if true but the Rock Cats love being affiliated with Minnesota. the Twins treat their affiliates great and they allow for a lot of player continuity since they keep their players at each level for a full season whenever possible.
I haven’t been to too many minor league stadiums to compare but NB is a very decent stadium imo and for 10 bucks 3 rows from 3B how can you beat it?
Last year i was talking from the stands with Valdespin, Familia, Raul Reyes and Matt Den Dekker. Wally was out signing autographs and it was just a great time.
Rock Cats do a great job with their season ticket holders and hustle sponsorships like crazy and are an institution in central CT.
This would be amazin!
agee:
In terms of price of ticket, you’ll find most minor league stadiums are in or around the same.
I agree with you that NB loves their affiliation with Minnesota, and they should. Terry Ryan & Billy Smith give their minors a close relationship.
However, business is business.
While the front office may enjoy the Twins, people do not buy tickets because the RockCats are the Twins. They buy them because of the stadium, the atmosphere etc. So if you ADD a reason to buy tickets (ie team that many people in this area support) you will increase revenue.
It won’t hurt the New Britain business of running a minor league team even a little if the Twins left. It would help grow them though if the Mets came to town.
As an FYI, one of their owners Bill Dowling is a former executive of the NY Yankees. For those who have been to the games, he is the one who stands at the top of the aisle behind first base (a little towards first) always in a suit jacket and usually has a foot up on the guard rail as he watches. Dowling actually worked as general counsel for the Spira case I believe.
Good point Jessep, I’ll bet your right although the Twin affiliation has been so strong and brought so many good players through the system and the Mets have had some rather serious issues with some of their affiliates in that same area I’d say that while Rock Cat Management may be cautiously optimistic I doubt their doing handstands and cart wheels over the possibility.
2013 could very well see guys like Flores, Wheeler, Ceccelini, Cordero, Maron, A-Rod, Peavey and while that may be somewhat attractive if they all get shipped out in July it won’t take long for the existing fan base to cop on.
You’d know much better than me but the Twins player development philosophy overlapped an awful lot of their affiliates needs and that hasn’t always been the case with the Mets. Off hand I’d say there might be some understandings that need to be arrived at before hand in order to make the Rock Cats comfortable.
Haha poor BeeHive, I can’t believe the wind hasn’t knocked it down. They used to have this horrible bee mascot. Never got into the whole “Rockcat” theme. But did get to see Mientkiewhatever, Papi and Hunter and I think Koskie there a few times. That Rockcat team was awesome.
The kiddies LOVE Rocky. I’ve been to a few games where he came outside the stadium before the game and the kids acted like Mickey just waved at them in Disney World.
It was a nickname that was voted on. That place is like a circus though, they have almost as many mascots as they do players on the team.
The high school uses the BeeHive now I believe
Alderson’s latest tweet:
@MetsGM Prepping for trip. Bought 4 like-new tires at chop shop across from Citi. He threw in free wiper fluid. Better than the Wheeler deal!
Can’t wait for the haters to jump on that one.
I like the human side. Omar spit out cliche after cliche he got in the GM handbook when he got hired. Which is fine, but it’s the same cliches we hear from every GM in every sport. Good change.
Ok, the first tweet was funny, we get it sandy, but now he’s stretching a little bit..

theGM of the mets is now a comedian.. good to know..
