2012 Mets Over and Under
As the official proclamation came down from Sandy Alderson that the Mets are pretty much done making anymore additions, I thought we’d have some fun. Me and a few of the guys (XtreemIcon, Jessep and Satish) thought it would be cool to do an “Over and Under” for the 2012 season. Don’t worry, it’s not as bad as you would think, but the results were pretty varied and interesting to look at. Here’s what we came up with:
We were unanimous in our opinions that Jason Bay would have 14 or more home runs this season, that David Wright would hit at least nine home runs at Citi Field, and that Johan Santana would make 15 or more starts. Oh and that the Mets will finish in last place. Boo! – I know, aren’t we terrible?
There’s plenty of more categories we can do so feel free to weigh in on ours or contribute a few of your own so the other readers can chime in.
Now here’s something totally off topic, but how cool is this cap?
Pretty wicked, huh?

ha I actually messed up with my 35+ HR going over 1.5, but it’s all good.
Just think about how psyched folks would be if Dude and Ike pulled it off.
If the cap wasn’t black, it’d be dope.
I am alligned with Joe D on everyone except Murphy at 2nd and Bay’s HR’s. I think Murph is going to move around a little and I wouldn’t be shocked of there is a injury. Bay in my eyes is toast.
My order of those I’ve got the least confidence in contributing this season (not counting the BP arms):
- Bay
- Pelfrey
- Johan
Would love to be wrong on all 3.
Hey Satish: What player’s do you have hitting more than 30 HRs?
I like your thinking….
*players
Hey srt,
I’ve got Wright, Davis, and Duda down for 30, but only Ike for 35.
95 HR out of the middle of the order is nothing to sneeze at.
Agreed, and I do think it’s possible. At the very least, I see at least 75 combined from Bay/Wright/Duda and 30+ ish from Davis.
Considering Murphy has average power too, and taking the ballpark adjustments into account, the offense is likely to be respectable.
I’ve got my doubts about Wright hitting 30 but if he’s fully healthy (no lingering back problem, etc.), he’s done it before so it’s possible.
If all 3 of them hit 30, I’ll be happy.
Man, that is fun. I wish I could play too… LOL.
Go ahead. What’s your picks?
74.5 Wins….Really??????
How much can I bet on the UNDER?
actally, i think vegas has the line at 69.5 wins for the mets.. if i am you, take the under Florida!!!
They haven’t put up win totals yet, just odds to win the World Series. I’ve seen 100/1 and 75/1 so far.
My my, Joe, such a pessimist.
Agree (OK, hoping) that the home run production with Bay and Murphy is going to pick up and that Santana will have more than half a season’s starts. I think there will be more than one starter over 15 wins (Dicky and Santana) and if that’s the case, then the Mets might indeed be over that 75 win total.
If this is of any consolation, with the above I can see the Mets being the best last place team in any division.
not sure if you are just making a joke, but you point out one of the big issues. The damned division they play in. The team is not at all devoid of talent. And if the SP is at all decent (as in, keep them in games and not be a train wreck) they certainly could be competitive in one of the patsy divisions (mostly the centrals, right?)
Hi Any,
I was serious in a humorous way. I don’t see the Mets being able to jump over any of the other clubs in their division and maybe winning about 78 games but a 78-84 record would be quite respectable for a last place club.
If the Mets were in the Western Division (or the clubs in the East were like the clubs in the West) they might be ranked as a wild card contender. Imagine playing teams the caliber of Los Angeles, San Diego and Colorado 18 times a year like the Diamondbacks do? With Citi Field now finally built around the team’s strength, with their revived run scoring ability any decent break with both the starting pitching and the bullpen could find the Mets competing for a wild card berth by beating up on those types of clubs. Remember, they were only five games back in the loss column almost two thirds…., well, everyone knows where I’m going with that one
But that’s a comment on how much weaker those teams are. There are no Padres, no Dodgers and no Rockies to contend with to make the Mets appear stronger than they really are. It’s like the Taliosians hoping Captain Kirk’s reality would be as pleasurable as Captain Pike’s illusion.
If Wright, Bay, Davis and Duda display the home run power many of us think they will I just hope we get production from the one and two spots so they won’t be more of the solo type in nature. I do believe Murphy will be on board to be driven in by them.
Unfortunately, our pitching and fielding might be as offensive as our offense.
