Today, The Mets Settled All Family Business
The Mets avoided hearings with four players eligible for salary arbitration after reaching one-year agreements with starter Mike Pelfrey, relievers Ramon Ramirez and Manny Acosta, and center fielder Andres Torres, the team announced Tuesday. Here are the final numbers.
- RP Manny Acosta signed for $875,000. His 2011 salary was $450,000.
- RP Ramon Ramirez signed $2.65 million. His 2011 salary was $1.65 million.
- CF Andres Torres signed for $2.7 million. His 2011 salary was $2.2 million.
- SP Mike Pelfrey signed for $5.675 million. His 2011 salary was $3.925 million.
Adam Rubin calculates that Mets payroll will be nearly $91 million for 2012.

And Pelfrey at 5.67 MIL
And Torres at 2.7 MIL
Only one left not signed is Acosta.
According to Rubin, that makes the payroll right now at 90.7 MIL.
Oh, boy…..
again, thinking with your book-keeper’s visor instead of trying to win ballgames.
Pelfrey should have been trade bait packaged with maybe a minor leaguer or another player and that money should have been used on better starting pitcher. I see no reason to spend that much on Peflrey – there should have been another game plan
Once again Bayonne, you misinterpreted a comment of mine. I keep telling you to stop reading between the lines b/c you’re just not very good at it.
If you think I’m at all happy with a one year reduction down to 90 MIL payroll and the state of the team, you sadly mistaken.
again with the book-keeper’s visor. Instead of worrying about the money you should annoyed at the moves this front office is making. They are doing a terrible job – just like what Beane is doing in Oakland – but no way in HELL would you ever even consider that thought. Your mind is so made up that whatever Sandy decides is best for the team that the thought that maybe, just MAYBE the job they are doing is sub par is completely foreign to you.
Instead you prefer to hide behind the money explanation.
The moves the FO are making is in direct correlation with the reduced payroll.
I’ve read many others ask you what you would have done differently with that payroll limit. I’ve yet to see anything specific from you, other than the phrase ‘more creativity’.
Instead of stereotyping every poster who doesn’t come out and say ‘this sucks’ with every SA move, maybe you ought to take a step back and look at the big picture. You might have a little less anger that way.
You haven’t seen anything specific from me? What the hell are you reading? I’ve been posting my own ideas on moves to be made here for the last 2 months and I just did today. What the HELL are you talking about?
And as for this absolutely RIDICULOUS statement you made:
“The moves the FO are making is in direct correlation with the reduced payroll”
what the hell does that even mean? That buying generic brand macaroni and cheese and generic white bread is the only thing you can do with pennies? There are no other options?
Give me a BREAK! And if you think i’m not looking at the big picture than your are CLUELESS beyond even my wildest imagination.
Don’t insult me with dumb responses like that again!
You haven’t seen anything specific from me? What the hell are you reading? I’ve been posting my own ideas on moves to be made here for the last 2 months and I just did today. What the HELL are you talking about?
….can’t find any. Care to repeat them?
Insult you? You take these posts far too personally.
srt, you are so wrong. He mapped out his plan.
Step 1) Take Jose Reyes on a date.
Step 2) Trade Wright (who he constandtly reminds us is worthless) and some pitching prospects and one of our players that has no position to an unnamed team for…pitching prospects
Stept 3) ???
Step 4) WORLD SERIES BABY!
Also along the way, he’d never use a word larger than 2 syllables (because sounding like an educated person is not what Real Baseball Men do!), fire anyone who has ever heard of OBP, and if anyone like the wiklpons tells him he’s over budget, he’ll tell them to go back to talking to their accountant visors (whatever those are) HE’S GOT BASEBALL TO DO!
BATYONNE, WAKE THE **** UP! WHAT SRT THINKS ABOUT SANDY’S MOVES, OR U OR ME DOESN’T MATTER HILL OF RABBIT TURDS AS LONG AS HE’S KEEPING FRED FROM LOSING HIS BALLCLUB BY APPEARING TO BE COMPETITIVE TO SELIG & CO. KEEPS HIM EMPLOYED.
UPON EXTRICATING YOUR HEAD FROM YOUR A$$, OPENING & WIPING THE **** FROM YOUR EYES U’LL NOTE THAT WHILE NEARLY 921M APPEARS PALTRY TO EVERYONE IN THE 5 BOROUGHS, U CAN’T ARGUE TOTAL MALPHEASANCE WHEN FLORIDA’S BECOME THE TOAST OF THE IMPROVMENT DISCUSSIONS ALL ABOUT THE GAME WITH A PAYROLL THAT MAY REACH 91M OR MAY NOT. BAYO, JUST BECAUSE SRT, MYSELF & OTHERS HERE REFUSE TO REPEATEDLY & USELESSLY TYPE THE SAME USELESS COMPLAINTS BLAMING EMPLOYEES FOR DOING WHAT THEIR SUPERIORS ORDERED THEM TO DO; SHOULD NOT BE MISINTERPRETED AS COMPLIANCE BY ANY OF US U SHOULD WAIT & MEASURE HOW WE’VE VOICED OUTR OPINIONS @ THE TURNSTYLES!
Pelfrey should have been trade bait? For who my friend?
What team wants an overpaid guy who has not progressed at all in the last few years and in fact has regressed. He might be a nice guy but Pelfrey has shown no heart and even worse no balls!
Pelfrey is an arm that will give you 175 plus innings of mediocrity at best. You are not going to get anything back n return that you won’t be bitchin about next year!
.
As long as people pay ridiculous ticket prices, pay big bucks for CABLE TV, buy jerseys and SPEND 8 bucks for a beer…then the owners will be raking the dollars in AND CAN AFFORD TO PAY
This roster might be the worst way to spend $90.7 million I have ever seen. It’s gonna be a loooong 2012 season.
Have you seen Waterworld?
bigger waste of money.
Bayonne and original, considering that santana may not even start the season, the mets roster on opening day is at around $65 million.. that includes Bay and wright salary at $33 million combined…
No its 90 mil. Just cuz Santana isnt on the big team doesnt mean his salary goes away…
Off Topic: KRod avoided arbitration by taking what turns out to be a pay cut at $8M. I think $8M for a setup man is pretty good for KRod.
See KRod is a guy who would get smoked in an arbitration hearing. Why? Because his role changed. A closer will always get more $ than a middle reliever and in KRod’s case its wise to take a paycut because he will want his contract to be team friendly so he can be dealt and be a closer again.
I can imagine how ugly it could of gotten had they gone to arbitration. Boras – my client is a premium closer. Brewer management – but we are arbitrating on what to pay him as a setup man.
Boras – Premium Closer!
Brewers – setup man!
Boras – closer!
Brewers – setupman!
Yea I think in the end KRod did fine for himself getting the $8M he did to be a setup man. I wonder if he regrets accepting arbitration though now that he agreed to $8M?
he still could only take a 20% pay cut max though.
you’d rather talk finances with your book-keeper’s visor than visit and engage all the alternative moves that could have been made to keep the Mets in contention. You’re Met fan, you’re a fan of a belief instead.
you are clueless. Mr NJ made a comment about what he got for a salary being good for a set up man, and I merely pointed out that thanks to the arbitration rules, there is a maximum cut a player can get regardless of how bad he is.
has nothing to do with the mets, or your complete and utter misconception of my particular viewpoints about anything.
So now that arbitration is out of the way bring on Spring Training.
MNJ, Bring on ST? for what?? so you can see how bad we are???????
Since becoming a fan of the Mets I have yet to ever NOT look forward to the start of a season. I don’t know if I am in the minority on this but it is what it is.
Quite Frankly MNJ, me too.. i watch this year though, no sense on going to see absolutely crap on the field… although i am thinking of seeing reyes’ first game back as a marlin…
I hear you. Now here is something to think about. Will more people come out to see Reyes 1st game back as a Marlin than they did his final game as a Met?
Pretty sure they did for Piazza, so it may happen again. Plus more than half of the fans actually took Alderson at his word and never even believed it was Reyes’ last game.
I don’t know what percentage of fans believed what but I don’t recall many feeling as I did that in the end the 2 sides could work something out. If anything I felt like I was in the minority on this.
Good thing the stadium wasn’t full. Imagine selling out a stadium to watch a guy take himself out after the 1st inning?
Better than to watch a guy who almost won a batting title and won an MVP award using STEROIDS… funny, you went on a rant about reyes when he took himself out, and even admiting to loving and wishing braun takes the batting title, yet i have not heard a peep from you on him using steroids… but wait, manny ramirez had the same hormones level as braun, you sh**** on ramirez and how much of a cheater he is, where’s the braun article you ****???
how come not a peep from you on braun using steroids… IS AMAZING how you wanted someone else to win the batting title rather than your own player, the player who is ur favorite (Alledgely) on the team that you root for that had never had a batting title champion..
Alex: Do you just wake up from naps and type out what happens in your dreams? When did I even mention Manny Ramirez cheating or when did I say I loved Braun and wanted him to win the batting title over Reyes?
You know what my stance has been on steroid users? I don’t care. Its funny that you come here telling me that I think this and think that yet during HOF debates I have clearly been in favor of steroid users getting in. Weird what happens when you deal with the real world. With Braun what I said was, be careful what you brag about. I’m not 100% certain Reyes never touched the stuff, are you? Or do you think he just hung out with a steroid dealer and it never came up?
Man you really do have a warped sense of reality.
I think it being at 1pm on a Wednesday had a lot more to do with the turn out than believing Alderson was going to break the (empty) bank for Reyes.
And the first game at Citi against the Marlins starts at 7:10. assuming Reyes isn’t injurred of course.
assuming Reyes isn’t injurred of course.”
We were a pretty good team when Piazza came back to Shea for the first time though. Now we suck.
MNJ, i do believe that other than opening day i think, this game or series will be a great sellout for the wilpons, other than that, yankees and phillies series will be packed with THEIR fan, the stadium for the most part will be empty…
Yea I believe you will probably be proven right on this. I would think/hope the Banner day and some other 50th celebrations to draw fans out but I think a healthy Ike Davis performing well along with the team playing better than expected will draws fans out.
I could be wrong but I think Reyes is going to be surprised by the booing he hears.
From what I’m reading there’s a fair amount of Met fans who somehow believe it was all his fault he didn’t sign with the Mets and there’s even more that are still angry on how that last game went down with his lone at bat.
And no, I won’t be there so I won’t be one of them.
I’m sure there will be some audible booing. If I’m there, I’ll cheer his first PA. After that, he’s just another Marlin.
I stood up for Piazza, I’ll stand up for Beltran, and I’ll probably stand up for Reyes.
Same here – if it was logistically possible for me to get to games.
Haven’t seen Citi field yet, still trying to get there.
pelfrey making $5.67M is an absolute joke .. we could have cut pelfrey and done much better with what was in FA
biggest waste of money ever
Done better in Free agency? I am not sure who you feel would be better but the pickings were pretty slim this year. CJ Wilson and Mark Buehrle we can eliminate. You want to say Harang? OK fair enough. How about Capuano? Is there that much more difference in signing him over Pelfrey? How about Bruce Chen? OK sure. You want to take a shot at one of the 2 guys from Japan Tsuyoshi Wada or Hisashi Iwakuma? That is fair as well. Maybe you would rather take a stab at one of the following Bedard, Maholm, Wang, Marquis, Willis or Freddy Garcia.
Really for me other than possibly Harang there really wasn’t much out there that one could arguably say is that much better than Pefrey for 1 year in my opinion.
And, just like last year, Harang elected to play in SoCal, where he grew up.
True
The only one that I have seen sign for less than Pelfrey that would be an upgrade was Saunders. Have to wonder though if he took a discount just to stay in Arizona.
Trading Pagan for Ramirez was the single best move the front office made this offseason. He’s a solid reliever with a great track record and the price is right. I think the deal would have been better had they left off Torres completely who was getting non-tendered by the Giants anyway. We could have signed him for the price of an iTunes download afterward if we wanted him that bad.
Trading Pagan for Ramirez was the single best move the front office made this offseason.
Agreed.
Too bad we couldn’t get a change of scenery type deal with Pelfrey like we did with Pagan. Not sure what the interest would have been because he was not actively shopped, but I’m thinking there’s at least a handful of teams that we might have been able to do a swap like this with. After the bad season Pagan had I never thought we’d get a guy like Ramirez for him. I would think Pelfrey has more value than Pagan?
I would agree on Pelfrey having more value than Pagan. There still is a chance on a trade involving Pelfrey though if it did happen I have a feeling it would be him along with another player or two going and possibly just 1 player returning. I have nothing to base this on of course. It’s just speculation on my part.
I’m not convinced a trade of sorts involving pitching won’t take place before opening day.
We can’t possibly go into the season hoping Santana is healthy – with the other 4 behind him – can we?
Outside of those 5 – and I’m still betting we don’t see Johan until the ASB – we’ve got next to nothing in SP depth. Schwinden(?) – and who else?
Batista?
We’ll probably see Familia and Mejia before the season is over.
I think someone would have traded for Torres if we had not. Not a huge loss if they had but lets see if he can rebound before we say sunk cost.
What, no Mets should sign Manny Ramirez posts on Metsmerized? What is this blog coming to?
It has gotten very sad, i am sure people who worship alderson will be praying for reyes to get hurt just so they can justified how lord sandy was right in not even negotiating with reyes, utterly pathetic if you ask me… That mets fans are now wishing injury on a human being so they can say, see, sandy alderson was right… SMH…
That’s one of the dumbest things I’ve ever read on here.
Just who exactly would wish an injury on Reyes?
Now if you’re talking about Hamels or Victorino – I could probably be tempted to LOL at an injury to either.
Got a gift for XMas – The book Amazin’s. It’s the one that’s a collection of NY Post articles written over the years on various Met players. The one written just last summer (July) on Reyes was my favorite in that book. The enthusiasm and love that kid has for the game is something I’m really gonna miss everyday going forward.
I love that book. I still have an extra 5 copies I’m going to give away once spring training starts.
Anyone who hasn’t had the opportunity to read this book should get in on that (contests, I presume?).
Some really great memories….
Who wished him hurt?
What are you referring to? If there was even a comment that hinted something like that, the one who wrote it would be the first MMO reader to be banned for life.
Alex can you ever go a day without some sort of hostility? You are the first to complain how you can’t talk baseball on this site anymore but you never talk baseball. All you do is bash the FO,David Wright and at the same time take offense when some people suggested that Reyes is not a Hall of Famer.Your act is not getting old,it’s ancient.
Big blow to the Tigers. Lost V-Mart for the year. yikes.
Oooo, a spot for Jason bay.
Poster on Over The Monster:
‘As I always tell myself when I think about Crawford’s 2011,’
‘At least Boston doesn’t have Jason Bay.’
********
Ouch.
Oh ya? You know what?….how about….BILL BUCKNER!
jerks.
I wonder if Wright’s value just went up some (specific to the Tigers)…
Ahhh… and with that let the trade rumors commence.
Keep shopping Bay.
How did Martinez get hurt?
Off season training, if the article is correct.
According to what I’m reading:
t’ore ACL during offseason conditioning ‘
This is going to be a 95-100 loss season. And that’s ok. More losing. Less fans. The antsier JP Morgan Chase gets..
Picard or no Picard, the noise gets tighter.
Damned autocorrect- meant noose.
Jose Reyes departing for the warm confines of Fish Park (or whatever the heck it is going to be called) is not as tough to swallow as Big Pelf getting a 45% raise. Sorry Mike, you stank the joint up and deserved less rather than more. For all his smarts and bravado, this would have been a good place for Alderson to take a stand. The Mets could have offered a token raise and any fair-minded arbitrator would have had to move in that direction. The other hidden message there would have been, “Hey… a bad campaign means you get nothing more next year.” Where is the incentive (or pain)? From the four settled cases, only Ramirez was deserving to the extent that he profited. Acosta deserved about 50% of what he got and same can be said for Torres, if we are being generous.
Baseball is doomed if they keep giving huge raises to those who do not produce and the Mets should have taken a stand with Pelfrey. If he doesn’t produce this year, he will hear from the fannies in no uncertain terms.
Just a little more grist…
With these potential arbitration cases being settled today, the Mets will have a 2012 payroll of roughly $91 million. The amazing number here is that 63% of the payroll is taken up by three players—Santana ($25.5 mil), Bay ($17 mil) and Wright ($15 mil). Pelfrey, Ramirez and Dickey make roughly what Bay earns (bad word) and represents about 18% of the payroll. This means the other 19 players will be making about $868,000 on average.
Arbitration is one of the nastiest things in baseball. That is why it does not go through very often. Did you really want Pelfrey back after he had to sit in a room and hear the GM talk about how crappy he was and did not deserve the money he was asking for? Think he is a basket case now, that would have been horrific.
Also, don’t forget that this money is not guaranteed. The Mets can release him during ST with little owed.
The price does seem a bit high for Pelfrey if you look at his comparables. The saving grace of his deal is that if he is pitching then one of the prospects isn’t. This is a huge stretch but I suppose that if Pelfey were to have been cut then the hand may have been forced to use one of the high end prospects instead of letting them develop. Wow that is a huge stretch but it’s the most positive thing I can think of.
