Mets Invite Matt Harvey and Matt den Dekker To Major League Camp

The Mets have invited RHP Matt Harvey and CF Matt den Dekker to Mets spring training camp in Port St. Lucie. Adam Rubin also added that Zack Wheeler, who was aquired in the Carlos Beltran trade, was not extended an invitation.

Harvey has been considered the more polished of the two and is said to be 1-2 years ahead of Wheeler in terms of development. Some experts have projected that Harvey could see some major league service time as soon as late 2012, that’s something which Sandy Alderson called “a good possibility”.

  • I’m okay with Wheeler not being in ST. He needs to put together a better full year in the minors first. This year is big for the Wheeler fans out there

  • Wheeler has yet to work himself out of Single-A where his 1.33 WHIP was nothing to write home about. So far he’s looking a lot like Parnell great K-Rate not much else.

  • Hopefully, at least Harvey does well and comes up some time this year.

  • Is Captain Kirk healthy? If so I would expect him to get an invite as well.

    • I read on Mets Minor League blog that he was healthy a couple of weeks ago.

    • He’s on the 40 man roster already.

  • I like what I saw from Den Dekker in last years ST. I’d rather see Den Dekker and Kirk get honest shots at CF than automatically see Torres get the spot.

  • So who is the best defensive CF prospect? Is it Dekker or Ceccillini or someone else all together?

  • All I can say here is: KEEP DAN WARTHEN AWAY FROM HARVEY!!!!! He’ll have Collins convinced he can help in the bullpen to open the season, much like Jennry Mejia back in 2010.

    • Why is Warthen still pitching coach again?

      • Because Pelfrey likes him, which should be the first red flag.

  • I don’t get the den Dekker invite because he often looked lost with the bat in Binghamton, maybe it’s cause he decided he wanted to hit for more power. I get that his defensive skills are awesome and that you need bodies in Spring Training, but personally, there’s other OFs I’d rather get to see.

    • They’ve already got 6 on the 40 man roster plus all those “infielders” with no real position (Valdespin, Flores, Lutz). I’m sure they’ll extend one to Vaughn or someone.

      • Oh, Duda is also listed as IF. And didn’t Baxter get an invite?

  • Does anyone else think its a possibility that Harvey has an tremendous camp and makes the opening day roster especially with our issues in the rotation. Make him our 4 or 5 starter!?

    • No. Not at all. He’s most likely starting the season in Binghamton and if picks up where he left off last year, he’ll be in Buffalo after a few starts.

He would need to have a tremendous camp just to skip Bingo.
