Ashburn is what you typically find at the CF position, Leadoff Hitters who get lots of singles and while they get more are offset by the QUALITY of hits Beltran is getting!

So My comparison is MUCH better than any crap you have suggested!

And YES if Ashburn is there so too should Beltran if he retired today!

Why is that a good comparison?

At this point, Beltran falls short. However, to say that position played is not a huge factor is just plain oblivious to how the voters have voted for generations.

But it makes little sense to compare SS to an OF when both positions have very different skill sets and batting is not part of that.

Ozzie Smith was not the hitter many HOF guys were. But he was a good hitter for a SS up until his time came for the voting.

Where you play is going to have a big impact regardless of where the league would like it to go!

So when you look at what type of player most often hits like in CF and compare it to what Beltran does you have to admit there are not many BIG BAT CFs to give him a run for the money.
Now will they consider that if beltran never plays CF again? Probably because for most of his career that is where he played!

Only poor performances from here on out could knock him out.
Which I won’t deny COULD happen, just that from this point right now if he retired this year he would get a good long consideration into the hall!
Because how many CFs have done what he has done?

I didn’t cut or discard Beltran. He’s not a Hall of Famer, Mets, or no Mets.

You are supposed to be the best “AT YOUR POSITION” during your era.

So how many CFs (which is where Beltran acquired most of those numbers) have done what Beltran did?

You can compare it to other players all you want but if they are not centerfielders you are not meeting the very first criteria for HOF voting.
Was he a dominant force compared to all the other players at his POSITION!

I’m sure there are a lot of 3Bs or 1Bs who had better batting numbers but didn’t and won’t make the Hall merely because there are a LOT of great hitting 3Bs and 1Bs because thats where you put really good bats that can’t cover an important position like CF!

So you can throw as many comparisons as you want out there.
Until you find a CF that hits like Beltran has it’s going to be hard to say he has no chance!

Personally I’m taking player X and I do not think Player X is a HOF’er

However consider this

If you HAD to pick 1 of those two players to put into the HOF, if they played in the exact same era… would you vote 1 guy in because he played CF as opposed to not voting the other guy in?

They are very, very close in production through the years, the only difference really is All-Star appearances and stolen bases.

Player X is Adrian Beltre by the way.

If you’re voting Beltran in because he played CF, you’re cheapining the HOF. (not that others haven’t cheapened it already)
