Hey Fred, This Buds For You – Selig To Get Two Year Extension

And the beat goes on…

Uncle Bud, or Commissioner Bud Selig as most of you know him, will be extended for at least two more years according to ESPN’s Buster Olney.

But of course he is…

The dirty deed will be consummated later this week at the owners’ meetings.

Selig became MLBs acting commissioner in 1992 thanks to some late night hi-jinks by his pal Fred Wilpon who coaxed many of the dissenting owners to let Bud reign supreme.

This is great news for Fred and Saul and Jeff who are now assured of a chief ally who will not let their grasp of the team wither away like a dead leaf on a tree. Selig will continue to twist some arms, look the other way and even bend the rules to keep his pal Fred on the throne in Flushing

Maybe this time, the Grand High Exalted Mystic Ruler will invest in a new suit that didn’t come off the rack at JC Penneys.

If this happens, I wonder if Sandy Alderson stays on for the entire duration of his contract or resigns before that?

I wonder if Paul DePodesta waits it out to become the future Mets GM or takes the first job that’s offered to him?

Remember, you heard it here first.

  • I think this insulates the Wilpons. Not the news I wanted to see.

  • Damn….just…damn

  • Buster Olney is a hack! I don’t believe this for one minute. Why would the owners even want him back after what went down with Rangers, Dodgers and Mets? I dont believe a word of it.

    • Probably because Bud is a very VERY owner friendly commissioner.

    • Not sticking up for Olney but Jon Heyman confirmed this with a different source who said the same thing.

  • Saw this speculation somewhere a couple of days ago. All I could think is ‘you’ve got to be kidding me’. And second was ‘why am I not surprised’?

  • My god, can this situation gets any worst!?!? now we have the crooks best friend extended, meaning, they’ll have as much time as possible to “resolve” their financial situation.. my goodness.. mets fans, with sandy at the helm and this crooks saving every penny, say hello to 400 winning % for the next 5 years…

    • Agree Alex. Not on the 400 winning %, but everything else. This was a blow to any chance the Wilpons would be out soon and it sucks for all of us.

  • As many of us have said before, BOYCOTT! We can bring the Wilponzis and Uncle Bud to their knees by making Citifield a ghost town day after day—including the Yankee series.

    • Amen Steve.I started in 2009 after Jeff and Omar sat on Mike Francesa’s show and said they would do everything possible to put a winner on the field and all they did was sign Bay and 2 unknown Japanese pitchers.I had enough of the Wilpons bullshit from that point on.

  • It doesn’t change anything…. this is still going down in flames. Selig or no Selig. There will come a time when MLB loses credibility with the rest of the owners. There is nothing that billionaires like less than one of their own number cheating them out of money and defaulting on loans.

  • NNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!

Ok, I’m stepping back from the ledge now.

  • Guessing 2 more years of Sandy before he inherits the role of Grand High Exalted Mystic Ruler. Whomever remains form DPo/Riccardi takes over. IF Picard wins this spring, even Uncle Buddy won’t be able to save the current ownership.

    • I thought Ed Norton or Ralph Kramden had first dibs on that job! WooWoo!

  • Not that I wish anyone ill will, but does this also assure Fred, Jeff and Bud free burial at the Raccoon National Cemetery in Bismark, North Dakota.

    • Yes and they get the honor of opening the first clam at the annual Clam Bake too.

      • Imagine, little old Fred, Jeff and Bud, laying out there with all those other raccoons.

  • is there a basis for your claim that the Wilpons coerced other owners into approving Selig?

  • His face… it’s soooooo…. PUNCHABLE!

  • Hey fellow Met fans: This Buds for you!

  • Putting aside your feelings over Selig’s handling of the Mets, there’s no denying he’s made baseball billions during his tenure. The Wild Card was a big hit for him. I’m not shocked that owners want him to stay on.

    • Don’t forget what he did for a couple of small and mid market teams.

  • I agree that looking at his tenure as Commissioner, Bud Selig’s track record is a mixed bag and depends upon how one wants to see it is how he will be remembered.

I think he has gone out of his way to save the Wilpons but putting that aside, his positive accomplishments have been:

    - Realignment and the new playoff system
    - Long term collective bargaining agreements
    - More revenue from television rights

But his negative accomplishments (even as acting commissioner):

    - 1994 strike, lockout and no post-season
    - Steroids run rampant under his watch
    - Altered playoff system which took away legitimate pennant races

My own feelings, Mets aside, is that he indeed loves the game but has to take responsibility for not doing anything about steroids when it was obvious to all insiders.
