Nice post Ed. I think your first paragraph says it all for me:

I’m very happy that John Franco has become the latest member of the Mets’ Hall of Fame. He is more than deserving of the honor, having pitched 14 seasons with the Mets and becoming the franchise’s all-time saves leader. However, I am surprised by the fact that Franco was inducted this year, when there is another reliever who’s been waiting longer and is equally, if not more deserving of enshrinement into the team’s hallowed Hall.

I think eventually he has to get enshrined as well, and I was very surprised and even discussed this with another blogger at the time when they included Cashen, Johnson, Gooden and Straw a couple of years ago. I thought he should have been in that '86 group. The most memorable image of the Game 7 - World Series win in '86 will always be Orosco.

It's on DVD? Too late for me I guess. I got tired of waiting for it to come out on DVD back then and ripped my vhs to DVD on my PC.

You know I have the SNY 9th inning and postgame of the night in 2006 the Mets clinched the division on dvd but unlike 1986 I can't bring myself to watch it knowing it will have the reverse effect of the 86 tape thinking about what could of been.

For me Franco gets the nod first. Being able to attend batting practice many times, he was always picking up balls, signing them, and throwing them to people in the stands.

Him standing on the mound wearing a dept of sanitation shirt under his jersey ever game represented his roots and respect for the local community. He did so much more than just pitch for the franchise. He was the face for many years.

As for comparing numbers "Mets" between Orosco and Franco, they can't be taken at face value. Closers threw less innings in the 90's compared with the '80's. Lets not forget about the dead ball era in the early eighties.

I understand your sentiment, but as Alex said it is about more than just numbers. I think being the captain of the team, face of the franchise, and work during 9/11 are things that have to be considered.

Also, this is not a who was a better pitcher debate. Jesse most likely wins that one. It is a Mets HOF and longevity has to count in that.
