Ankiel Can Help Mets At A Reasonable Price

There was some talk the Mets were monitoring the outfield market, but Juan Pierre is now off the market and they will find the asking prices for Johnny Damon, Kosuke Fukudome and Raul Ibanez to rich for their blood.

Vlad Guerrero is strictly a DH type, J.D. Drew is heading toward retirement and Magglio Ordonez is an injury question. All three would want more than the Mets are willing to pay, regardless.

Rick Ankiel is still available.

Ankiel, who made $1.5 million last year for Washington is within the Mets’ budget. Ankiel hit 25 homers for the 2008 Cardinals, but hasn’t come close to those numbers since, although he hit nine last season.

Ankiel isn’t a player to build around, but he does offer something of value to the Mets in three capacities: 1) as a left-handed bat, 2) an exceptional defensive replacement, and 3) as a back-up center fielder to Andres Torres.

Yeah, I can hear the groans already about Ankiel, but the truth is he can contribute in several areas at a reasonable price, and for the Mets that’s about the best they can hope for these days.

  • I like Ankiel for the Mets but I won’t throw a fit if they don’t get him

  • I said the Mets would pick up Ankiel months ago, and I still think they should. Is he Beltran in his prime? Absolutely not, but he does have power, is good as a defensive replacement off the bench and will probably run you about a million or so. I can see this happening.

  • I’ve been calling for this move this whole offseason. Ankiel just makes sense. As you said, a great defensive replacement for either Torress or Duda in RF, a veteran who can help some of these young fresh guys on the squad, as well as a LHB with a potential for some pop.

It just makes sense. Sign him before he’s gone Sandy…

  • He also was a pitcher and has a great arm to throw out a runner.

  • I think he’d be a great addition, especially off the bench whether it be pinch hitting or as a defensive replacement. His arm is one of the best arms in baseball at the moment.

  • Oh boy another 4th outfielder! Ankiiel could be the missing piece that we need to get to third place.

  • I would be down with it. He can also split some time with bay to keep him fresh (and of course, away from RH pitching!)

    • That would be the best use for him, I think.

  • I have no problems adding Ankiel either, I wouldn’t mind Fukudome just so I can buy the shirt and even though a ‘c’ is missing you can still get your message out to everyone while wearing a Mets shirt at the same time :-)

  • I dont know about this guy, he seems washed up to me. I would rather have someone from the minors come up and get some reps in left field and right.

  • Is Ankiel an upgrade over Mike Baxter, who is the 5th outfielder right now? Yes, I think he is. Let’s get him.

    • I am not real sure he is. How do we really know considering how little we have seen of Baxter?

  • OBP less than 300. avoid.

    • he won’t be brought here to walk, it will be for some D and pop of the bench, drive in some runs – not walk

      • presumably you want him to bat runs in by striking out and grounding out?

dude you almost always have to get on base to bat in runs. thats what OBP is dude. its isnt a measure of walks.

players with lots of RBI and low OBP are players that are ruining their teams. because they numbers mean they suck but play every day in a potent lineup.

  • Safe to say the hot stove season is pretty much over. Maybe one more signing like this one here. I’m still going to enjoy my Mets baseball and look forward to a fun season. Also thanks for keeping us warm this winter MMO.

  • They would’ve been no worse off if they held onto Pridie. He played a helluva CF. If it’s defense they’re looking for. He was only making the minimum too.

  • Rick Ankiel or Carlos Beltran—– Beltran of course.
Rick Ankiel or Angel Pagen —– Pagen
Rick Ankiel or Andres Torres —- ?
Release Fernando Martinez, waive Jason Pridie and Nick Evans…..?

Wow. this great Sandy Alderson saster plan is so good no one can figure it out!

    • I’m tempted to agree, but the spelling mistakes…

  • as a backup—ok. He has no srike zone, has not flashed real power, as you say, n a few years, and is a pitcher. But as a backup LHH OF, ok.

  • I have to ask, is this rebuilding? Of course not, this is patching together from a salvage shop. Get him if you like, but how long will he be of any value? Certainly not something you would do in the big picture long-term building of a ruined franchise. Just another chaeapie one day action to make it to tomorrow. Can he have some mild contribution here? Sure, but this is not rebuilding. Of course, I beleive rebuilding will not actually start until some more years transpire. So go ahead and do it, but it’s mostly ho-hum, what else do you have for me? I remember the line from the song: “Is that all there is?”

  • Ankiel would be a good pickup for the Mets. With Lucas Duda’s limited range, Rick would help the defense and he does have power. He’d be a better hitter if he could cut down on his strikeouts. Take a shot Sandy!

  • Eh….I’d much rather see some SP depth.

    • Ankiel can do that do too, just not very well, but he would fit on this staff just as well as Chris Young would.

  • I really have an aversion to having anyone in the offensive lineup who has an OBO under .300. That is not too much to ask. Maybe even .320. That would be a good floor for rating a player, starter or backup. And from the .320′s I want to see power.

    • OBO is a typo. OBP, obviously.
