Wright Offers Are Not Very Righteous

Sandy Alderson may not be actively shopping third baseman, but he has gotten at least two offers according to Heyman.

Alderson spoke to reporters last night and said, “he did not anticipate trading David Wright this winter”.
I’m pretty sure that if one of those offers bowled him offer, Wright would be an ex-Met tonight - rightfully so. With our rebuilding process in full bloom, I see no reason to keep Wright.
As with Reyes, we never won anything with Wright, so lets cut bait and not do this re-build half-assed (pardon my french).
The other thing is I always considered Reyes and Wright joined at the hip. Now that Reyes is gone, it seems weird having Wright without him.

The Mets made a decision to limit the duration of a contract for Reyes so he left and went for the 6 year instead of 5 year contract. It’s not like Babe Ruth just left the Mets. This team still has good players, Wright, Davis, & Murphy are very good offensive players. Bay (if he comes close to his ability), Pagan, and Duda can be good or very good. Add some complimentary guys and give guys like Reese Havens (if healthy) and Kirk Nieuwenhuis a shot in the second half and I think the Mets will score runs. All these players with the exception of Bay and Pagan are young enough to be part of a run at an NL East title in 2013 or 14. The pitching will limit the Mets more than their offense. With luck Santana will be good in the first half and can be turned into some good, high level prospects in July. If he is great the maybe he is kept around to head the 2014 rotation. No more gloom, the future is not that ugly. If the new schedules are not division loaded but rather evenly distributed across the league that will only help.
Your optimism doesn’t fit in with some whiners. Change your attitude. lol.
Also the thing about Tejada is the timing is off. I like him, always have but I did not want Reyes to leave. Well he’s gone and that’s that.
The thing with Tejada is he’s a better hitter than any other Mets SS during their championship runs. 69-73 had Harrelson, the 80s had Rafael Santana, & 99-01 had Rey Ordonez
Tejada has to grow into his role now that’s why I never believe all the nonsense the haters and goons used to spread with their defensive numbers. He’s a good fielder and better than what some people think, even Sandy said it today but that’s nothing new. I honestly in my heart believed the amount of errors he was making was abnormal and not indicative of what he will become. At 21 He’s a better hitter than all of the aforementioned short stops already. I was too little to remember Harrelson’s defense although I do know it was good. Tejada will be a better fielder than Rafael Santana and while I don’t think he’ll surpass Ordonez (who does anyway) he’s already surpassed Ordonez as a hitter. So having Ruben Tejada as your SS on a championship team is not an issue as he’s overall better than any other SS the Mets have had during their championship runs outside of 2006.
The problem is the timing. I wanted Jose to sign and at the end of his contract Ruben could have moved over to SS at the age of 26 or 27 but that’s not happening. So now we have a SS that can play with the best of them already at 21 but the rest of the team is not up to par like they were in the late 60s/early 70s w/Harrelson, the 80s with Santana, & late 90s early 00s w/Rey Ordonez. Combine that with unfarily being compared to his predecessor gives a false reading of Tejada. He’s a championship type piece/player on a team that’s not ready for any championships yet and therein lies the misconception of comparing him to Reyes. Reyes was more appropriate for a team like this but now with Tejada the best way to appreciate what he does if if the Mets were a better team all around.
One of the reasons I was against losing Reyes and Wright was the negative impact on the fan base. Some Mets fans don’t place any value on growing and keeping our kids. i do. I think baseball loses some of its value when we see players and owners treat each other like one-night stands. Not everything has to be cast in mercenary terms. The Wilpons are acting like the scourge of yesteryear, Walter O’Malley.
As with Reyes, we never won anything with Wright, so lets cut bait and not do this re-build half-assed (pardon my french).
Two different cases altogether. While Reyes only cared about money, Wright is loyal and a true team player. He deserves a 5 year deal and he’ll get one. Plus he’s not injury prone like Reyes.
i think i speak for alot of fans, watching the last game of the year, and reyes 1st at bat he not only bunted but had a pinch runner come in. i knew then and there he was not a met any more.
sandy did too. terry cried over it.
Wright hasn’t performed well enough the last few years to warrant a 5 year extension, especially since we have him for 2 more years. That makes no sense. He has to show he’s not in decline now that the fences are moved in before even considering a commitment like that.
as Clint Eastwood said in “Unforgiven”: “deserves got nothing to do with it.” Just being a good guy does not entitle you to a 5 year contract. New sheriff in town. If they think Wright has peaked, or that they can get something potentially better for the long run, he will be history, too. They may just be waiting for him to have a productive start. They might consider it suicidal to trade them both the same off season. I know Wright controls his option year, but if a team is in contention, they can do crazy things, as the Giants showed us last year.

To be honest, Wright hasn’t been in Reyes’ position yet. We’ll see what happens when Wright is up for a big payday.
I agree on that point. What will speak volumes for Wright is if he takes into account the Mets current situation.
Everybody seems to give Reyes a pass on that. If he wanted to stay here he would have. Just like LeBron taking off his jersey in his final Cavs game, Reyes took himself out at Citi Field when people paid to see him play. He knew he was gone. He wanted to get paid.
Now if Wright doesn’t get traded, lets see what he does. I guarantee you 1 thing. He won’t take himself out of his final Mets home game. But we’ll wait and see
So everyone knows that this team is bleeding money, so I’m not surprised about the lowball offers. That will change come the trade deadline. So, we get to complain or cheer Wright for at least another half season.
Craig – it sounds like you have drank the Madoff Kool Aid.
Why on earth would the Mets ever allow their best franchiese player and one of the most exciting players in their history to go to a division rival at the age of 28?
Why on earth would you take the other 28 year old All Star and trade him?
Rebuilding? Rebuilding what? You have two 28 year old home grown core players on your roster and you justify getting rid of both? Unbelieveable!
tlagee-c’mon do you really want to give reyes106 mill when he’s just going to get hurt? his legs are getting older, not younger. money won’t fix his delicate hammy.
Yes, I do amazin. but it never had to come to this. The team could have had a more reasonable deal before the season started.
He is arguably the most exciting player today. As far as his hammy’s go, would you have used that same argument with Rickey Henderson at age 28? He too had a hisory of bad hammys. It’s all part of the price of speed – something Sandy (Billy Beanes mentor) is not a big fan of.
tlagee, i see what ur saying but i don’t think the mets ever planned to resign him and i don’t think reyes ever planned to stay here.
i wish him well but now i am focusing on the new team. you might laugh but it hurt me more to see capuano go to the dodgers. thought they would at least keep the lower priced guys.
any word on pagan?
Fair enough amazin. I believe that Reyes did want to stay though. I agree that the Mets – the new money-poor mets – did not want to pay market value to such a valuable player.
I also agree that it was wrong to let Capuano go.
Imagine a family realizing they are broke because they got greedy on a too-good-to-be-true investment scam. Now they have rounded up everything in their house and put it on ebay. That’s where the Wilpons are at. Sandy’s job is to take digital pictures of all of their valuables and manage the ebay account.
It’s sad – and criminal.
See-I think the only teams that can afford to pay people not to go to a division rival are the Yanks and the Red Sox. It is just bad business. And after the Madoff bad business, it does not pay to do more bad business. It is even bad business for the Yanks or the Red Sox. They just don’t care.
Trading Wright this off-season makes absolutely no sense. He has greater value to our team as we control him for the next 2 years because we have an option that will not ride with Wright if he’s traded. In other words, if the Mets traded Wright to, say, Colorado – then Colorado would only have control over him for next season.
In addition, Wright’s trade value is capable of being so much higher. So, why don’t we see how he performs with the walls at Citi Field brought in, hope he stays healthy, wins a batting title and has the best OPS of his career. Then Fred & Jeff can climb over one another to answer the solicitations calls from rival GMs.
i would have to see the offer for david wright before i dismissed it.
after all, these teams have played us and have seen how un-clutch david is.
Potentially penny wise, pound foolish. Amazin, Amazin, Amazin… Alliteration abounds!!!
Allowing Wright the opportunity to redeem himself yields several benefits, including but not limited to redeeming his trade value, contributing to next year’s team success, maintaining some semblance of continuity for a traumatized fan base and, last but not least, the possibility that he rediscovers the very special player that he is in a NY Met uniform.
That said – if Colorado offered us blue chip pitching prospect Drew Pomeranz & catching stud Wilin Rosario, I’d think about it.
Rosario is a possibility but Pomeranz is not getting traded for a one year rental. They gave up Ubaldo Jiminez to get this kid and he has frontline stud upside.I was stunned Cleveland traded him for Jiminez considering the year Jiminez was haviing.
Tommy-no one is going to offer them anything for dwright. i feel bad for captain fantastic, he has had to suck it up and be the face of the team thru alot of shit.
is it true that mgmt reached out to krod? in the real world he’s prob worth 3 mill? what did sandy offer him, league minimum?
What an idiotic little Blurb. Whoever is in charge of this website might want to think about proof reading some of the filth written on here before it’s posted.
Opinions you disagree with are filth? Why dont you go to mets.con. Blogs are for opinion and clearly you just want koolaid. So act like an adult or move on.
Wright has a ways to go in establishing more value for himself. He’s been in a decline and hopefully the changes to Citifield reverses that trend. If that happens I’m sure Wright will be traded mid season.
not so sure they will trade wright but it’s going to be a team where you root for them and enjoy the rookies have their milestones. sandy can expect to lose another 70 million this year. i guess that all works out for them accounting wise.
At this point, why not.. get rid of everyone, start anew from the get go, tell the fans we’re gonna suck for 4 years and hope the kids come up and be good and we’ll go from there… stop with the nonsense about “we’re not conceiding 2012″, yeah, he’s right, we’re conceiding 2012, 2013, 2014 ……..
The focus has to be stockpiling young pitching. Look at the Phillies–despite the well known names in their lineup, their offense stunk for the most part. But they finished first. You can have mediocre offense and finish first. You can even have a good enough offense without big names. But you must have strong starters to do that.
Maybe the Wright offers are so bad because all the other 29 teams consider him to be what I’ve said for years, that he’s an above average third baseman offensively, and a bad defender who consistently ranks among the worst third baseman in the league. Throw in that his best/peak season was five years ago. What could you possibly expect for a player like that?
Maniac, another possibility is that you’ve been wrong for years and that you don’t know what’s being negotiated and what the offers are.
