Time Doesn’t Heal All Wounds

I guess some wounds never heal.

I was captivated by this video which shows a very emotional Tom Seaver still struggling to talk about his infamous trade to the Cincinnati Reds by M. Donald Grant.

You can’t help, but get emotional yourself watching him get choked up like that.

  • Now we have thesecind coming of Grant in Sandy Alderson.

    • Not even close

      • Yeah you right it’s not close!

Grant only traded ONE All Star! Alderson three in less than a year!
        LOL

        • No, he traded 1 All Star. One who was leaving at the end of the season with no compensation.

The other guy he traded hadn’t made an All Star game for a while.

The other guy freely chose to leave. Of his own accord. To chase the big contract 29 teams wouldn’t give him.

          • Well being an All Star does not have an expiration date stupid!

            So thats TWO All Stars!

And as for the third well he got an interest from THREE teams none of them the Mets!

Sandy leads Reyes on the “I Won’t Negotiate” Game 2-1!

Despite all your attempt at make Reyes out as the guy who would NOT negotiate in this whole thing!

            And guess what…
By the time the season is over we will probably have yet another All Star sent packing when he trades Wright!

This is the guy you think is making this team better!

            HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

            • Kinda weird how you’re allowed to call people stupid here, anyway I’ll leave the rest of my response to your “points”

“Well being an All Star does not have an expiration date stupid!” You really can’t say that. Donal’s point is valid, because if you say that then you’re giving Jason Bay the same recognition you would give Beltran. Do you feel thats fair to Bay or Beltran?

But just for sticking to the points Metsie you said “Yeah you right it’s not close! Grant only traded ONE All Star!”

Amos Otis went on to win 3 GG and was a 5 time AS
Nolan Ryan went on to be well Nolan Ryan

But since I think you meant previous all-stars

Dean Chance Cy Young winner for LA in 64 traded in 71. Was an All star in 64 and 67
Tommie Agee traded in 72: All Star in 66, 67

I’m sure I can find more, but that’s enough to prove you were wrong. Thanks

              • Fair to Bay or Beltran?
Being an All Star has an intrinsic value in trade no matter who the player is and what numbers he is currently putting up!

And you seem to be lumping all the All Stars traded as if they all occurred in ONE YEAR!

Sandy did all that over the couse of less than 6 months!

Grant took from 72-77 to trade away the same three!

Yeah he was just as apt to trade All Stars only he didn’t do it all in 6 months time!

THATS the point you seem to be missing or conveniently trying to hide here!

And who says I get away with anything?
I have seen you plenty of times use the word stupid TO me and OTHERS!
You only seem to have an issues when it’s one of your Parrot Minions that gets called that not when they do it someone else!

So sorry that you feel these things are only bad in one direction!

            • “Well being an All Star does not have an expiration date stupid!”

It sure does. Or are you still excited about Jason Bay?

As for the rest of your rant, I already told you, get your lithium dose increased.

              • Excited? What does that have to do with his Record and Accomplishments?

Get a clue my little child!

    • Ya, just like when Seaver chose to not talk to the Mets and freely chose to chase a bigger contract with another team.

      Just like that.

      • The Mets didn’t want to pay him. He had every right. The Mets also didn’t want to pay Don Sutton either when there was trade worked out for Seaver before the 1976 season. If there was sports talk radio ibm the 70s, the Seaver debacle never happens.

        • Not what I was saying. I forgot the sarcasm tag.

And if there was uniformed hot air radio in the 1970s, the Midnight Massacre probably would have been worse.

      • Yeah it seem to you that anytime a Player refuses to negotiate it is Evil Incarnate but when a Cheap Assed GM does it it’s just good business!

Yeah time for Sandy to make more Kool Aid for you to suck down!
Your going to need it once Wright gets traded!

        • I don’t blame Reyes at all for chasing the big contract and you freely choose to ignore the several times I’ve said that.

My issue lies with how he acted all butt hurt at his press conference and for the knuckle draggers who think this is anything like Seaver being traded.

          • Your Issues lay with Genetics and Intelligence, nothing else!

You have done everything possible to make reyes out as the bad guy and Sandy as the Victim!

And YES it is just like Seaver, a Homegrown hero let go for squat!
Two 2nd rounders at best in return!
All because your boy was too scared to make an offer for fear of getting exposed and caught in what his real motive was to get rid of Reyes!

He NEVER wanted him and the only reason he asked during the season to negotiate was because he knew the answer would be no and he wouldn’t have to make an offer then!

If he REALLY wanted to then he should have made that offer at the end of the season when he had exclusive rights!

Problem is if he did that Reyes might have taken that and screwed Sandy’s plan to get rid of him!

    • That is ridiculous Greg……What M Donald Grant did to the Mets following Mrs.Payson’s death was absurd. Grant had without a doubt the best pitcher in baseball working for peanuts because of the new age of free agency. Seaver and many of the Mets were angry and spoke out that no effort was being made to improve the team which still was making money. He asked that he be given a contract extension that would at least get his salary to be in line with those pitchers like Andy Messersmith who had one or two good seasons and Grant said no. Furthermore, Grant used his newspaper buddies like Dick (pun intended) Young to make Seaver look bad by using his wife and their relationship with Nolan and Ruth Ryan in print. So, we ended up with the MIdnight Massacre of 1977. That broke the hearts of Met fans like no other event and you should no better than to put Sandy A in Grant’s class. Sandy is simply cleaning up the mess that has been created and trying to rebuild. The problem here is that the fans disappointment and anger is constantly being refueled by the vulture like swarming of the media. Smart fans know that there is no quick fix for the Mets.

Sandy ended the Ollie and Luis crap…..he traded a noble but aging and always wounded warrior like Carlos Beltran for a young stud pitching prospect….he knew that a player as great as Jose Reyes couldn’t make the team a contender and resigning him would hurt financially an already poor situation. Add in Jose’s risk of injury and the final assessment to not want to resign him for MEGA BUCKS was smart. Losing Reyes was not a happy thing but a move necessary for the future. It immediately clears up a muddled mess by having Ruben Tejada become the shortstop and unclogging the second base candidates.

If Mets fans can’t face the truth……they are foolish. This team will be rebuilt from the bottom up and will start by improving the young pitching as it has already done. Sandy ia a baseball man whereas Grant was a senile, WASPY jerk who treated his players like slaves.

      • Outstanding! The truth is always the best policy!

  • Don’t blame Sandy. He didn’t dig this huge financial hole the Mets are in. Bud just sent him in to be the hatchet man. At this point, it wouldn’t shock me to see the Mets contracted and have the Dodgers move to Citi Field, with a new NL franchise in L.A. It’s hard to sue an entity that doesn’t exist any more.

    • Oh please Steve,
Sandy spent as much money on Relief pitchers who were there because they LOST their job due to sucking as it would have taken to resign Reyes so this crap about not having the money is just that CRAP!

He had the money to spend he just decided to spend it on crap instead of one good player!

  • Anyone comparing Grant to Alderson proves what little they know about the history of the team.

    • And anyone who thinks that was not born before 1977!

      • Well I was, I lived through the Seaver trade, and Reyes leaving is not even close to the Seaver trade.

        • The things Grant said about Seaver were unforgivable.

The NY METS did not have the money to meet Reyes’s requirements, despite how many times you twist it, it has nothing to do with Alderson wanting or not wanting him.

        • Agreed Kay, it’s not even close. It shouldn’t even be in the same conversation. Felt like my best friend died that day.

          • Grant was disgusting with the things he said. Calling a US Marine a communist?

It was a different time, and I’m sure he’d be sued for some of the things he said and did, if it was today.

            • I hated those days far more than any other period in Mets history. I cried that day. Only other times I remember crying in baseball was Gil, and for some reason I shed a tear for Munson and Martin.

              • Same here, I remember when Gil died clearly, because my father was a HUGE Gil Hodges fan and he was devastated and clearly moved by it, and well…….

Seaver’s response to his trade was far more emotional too, then Reyes conversation with Kevin Burkhardt.

        • Ok answer this (And JoeD you should think about this as well)
How old were you when Seaver left
And what do you think Kids today who are that age and avid Met fans feel?

Sure we don’t feel the same as we did when Seaver left!

Because we are no longer kids!

But how do kids who were our age when Seaver left feel knowing he is gone?

          Think About it!

          • Still doesn’t mean there are any similarities with Alderson and Grant

            • No one said there were, Sandy is doing MORE damage to the team than grant did!

              • Actually Pomes did, and you are rewriting history, Grant was far worse and you’re not paying attention, the Owners are destroying this team!

  • Mets fans still love Seaver no matter how circumstances went on before and after. The only Met to be in the baseball hall of fame and a 300 game winner. As a Met fan, it just rips my heart out that a long time Met could go to another team. I remember when Strawberry left for the Dodgers after the 1990 season and now experiencing another one in Reyes leaving for the Marlins. Should be blame the owners for this debacle of Reyes? Absolutely. Alderson’s hands were tied because of how the budget was severely limited and can’t catch the big fish free agents. Unless the Wilpons are selling the team, the Mets will suffer big time for years to come just like the Seaver trade and the Mets went downhill from then on.
