Sandy Does Dallas
I understand the fans’ dismay over the Mets losing Jose Reyes, but I believe it has more to do with the disarray the team is in more than losing the player itself. Reyes’ departure is emblematic to the degree of how far the Mets fell since the 2006 playoffs.
The fact is Reyes makes his living with his legs but hasn’t been completely healthy in three seasons, including two stints on the disabled list last year. The Mets’ financial situation made it cost prohibitive to bring him back at that price and it wasn’t worth the risk. Realistically evaluating things, bringing back Reyes was the wrong play.
If you’re frustrated and angry, it should be at the Mets’ overall condition and not that a brittle player took the money and ran.
* It is premature to give the Angels a pass into the playoffs. Their rotation might be stronger than Texas with the addition of CJ Wilson, but the Rangers’ lineup remains superior and there’s always the chance they might add Prince Fielder.
Do you remember when the Yankees added Alex Rodriguez and Randy Johnson? They were supposed to win multiple World Series, but didn’t win anything until 2009, and by that time Johnson retired. The Phillies were favorites the past two years. How did that work out? Also, how did it work out for the Miami Heat last year and the Philadelphia Eagles this season? Rarely, do things work out smoothly for Dream Teams.
* Don’t you think the Yankees regret the Rodriguez contract? I bet they do. I’d also be willing to bet eventually the Angels and Marlins might regret their wild spending, which never guarantees anything.
* I wouldn’t be surprised if St. Louis made a run at Fielder to take the sting out of losing Albeert Pujols. Even so, the money might be better spent on maintaining because the Cardinals are still a good team and don’t need an overhaul.
* Regarding Fielder, I found it laughable to read the Cubs don’t have the money to spend on Fielder. The Cubs have the resources, but are they willing?
* The Mets believe they bolstered their bullpen, with Sandy Alderson saying they have the seventh through ninth accounted for. Then again, they took from the Toronto Blue Jays, a team with over 20 blown saves last season.

You don’t get it Mr Delcos. Getting a FA doesn’t guarantee you anything. It gives you a chance. something that lord sandy and crooked fred/saul/little jeffy do not care about. If lord sandy would care he wouldn’t have taken the job with such classless owners, and if fred/saul/jeffy cared the team would have been sold the day the world found out how they were funding the team.
as for the Yankees? do they regret haviung YES getting double the ratings of SNY? Do they regret having 45,000 plus at every game vie 23,000? You don’t get.
Agree with a lot of what you say.
I’m not sure the Cardinals make a run at fielder. While Albert has been great, it’s always their pitching that has taken them far. I wouldn’t be surprised if they looked at Beltran and moved Berkman to 1B. Would be much cheaper and they wouldn’t have to look to trade Westbrook and the other starter that were rumored to be on the chopping block.
The Mets bullpen has certainly not become the best in the league, but it certainly is a lot better than it was before. I have a feeling Mejia is going to be the closer of the future, so the short term deals (which even Francisco’s is) are smart.
I still don’t understand the listening on Ike. Yeah, I know it can’t hurt to listen, but to me, he’s the new face of the franchise, especially once Wright gets traded. Even listening, though, still confuses me, as there is still a decent amount 1B names that are out there (Fielder, Trumbo, etc.). Now, listening on Niese makes sense to me, but you’d have to get both an MLB ready arm and a prospect, at the least.
If you think the Yankees didn’t make out on the A-Rod deal your sadly mistaken. The guy , like him or not sells, look at there attendance before and after
Not hard to distinguish the Met fans whose logic is dictated by all emotion and those whose logic is dictated by facts.
Not hard either to see those dictated by pure emotion are those constantly trying to shoot the messenger.
John is right. If you’re gonna be mad, and really what Met fan SHOULDN’T be, be angry with the owners who have put the team in the financial mess that it is. I wanted Reyes back as badly as anyone, brittle legs and all. But it just wasn’t going to happen at the years and dollars the Marlins handed him. And when all is said and done the Marlins will probably regret backloading the deal as heavily as they did when he’s constantly on the DL in the last 2-3 years of the deal and he becomes impossible to trade.
I’m no Alderson fan or apologist, but the Reyes situation really isn’t his fault. Had the Mets not been bleeding money who knows what he might have done with Reyes. I have felt since he took over as GM that he was never really fond of Reyes. However, I think the lack of money played a more significant role in not offering a legitimate contract than any personal feeling about the player. So, be mad at the owners on this one rather than the GM. Maybe if Fred and Saul had bribed local officals the way it appears the Marlins did in getting their ballpark paid for then maybe the Mets aren’t as deep in debt as they are! LOL
John, you and I are completely on the same sheet of music! CJ Wilson is a great pitcher, but the Angels just paid $70 mil + for a number 4 starter. Yeah sure, they have a GREAT rotation right now, but so do the Phillies and they didn’t make it out of the Divisional Series. Baseball is a funny sport like that, that’s why “predictions”, although fun and entertaining to some, don’t fly well in the world of bat and ball. Predict and bet all you want on predictable football, baseball is a different animal.
I’m also sad to see Reyes go, but in my mind it was a smart move. The guy hasn’t played in more than 133 games since 2008 and those hammies are dwindling by the year. I love Jose, I really do and wish him the best. We have to be cognizant when looking at a long term deal with an individual who clearly is a health risk.
I also believe that even though we’re definitely not “predicted” to do anything this season, the boys will look good at the plate. This past season there was plenty of talk from D Wright, TC, and others about the mental anguish Citi Field puts on our hitters. That has clearly affected the heart of our lineup, thanks to Omar and the Wilpon’s theory of early 20th century baseball. I believe that the adjustments to the outfield walls will help improve the state of our lineup. Especially concerning Wright and Bay. Let’s all HOPE that Bay finds his stroke again and is a threat at the plate. Everyone wants to talk about a team/lineup on paper and how well it is. The heart of our lineup consists of Wright, Bay, Ike, and Duda (maybe not in that order of course.). I personally like the way that looks. Let’s just see how it pans out. Just like the baseball world will only have to see how Miami and LAA’s season pans out.
We’re Mets fans, we know heartache. It’s too easy to be a Yankee fan. I heard an a** clown on MLB radio say screw the Mets, he’s gonna be a Red Sox fan. Well good riddens and when the Mets are a contender again, stay in Boston!
Hey Delcos,
“Sandy does Dallas” is a play on “Debbie does Dallas” right?
Are you trying to say Sandy “BLOWS” or “SUCKS” like Bambi Woods?
