Love all the hate for Alderson. It’s not like a GM ever wants to cut payroll. He’s working within the parameters set by the owners of the team. The powers that be told him to cut at least $40 million from the payroll. The guy is just working with what he’s got. Omar had free reign and spent poorly. Alderson is told to cut massive chunks while big dollars are ties up in injured and underperforming players. I can’t say the direction of the team is thrilling, but if the owners are cutting payroll we can do worse than having Alderson trying to clear it and bring in some young talent that is cost effective and under team control with plugging holes with stop gap cheaper alternatives.

True, but it tends to prevent people from creating Rube Goldberg-like plots to get something they could get in an easier manner.

You’re all probably right, especially about getting the owner approvals.

As for being 77, being old doesn’t stop anyone from being greedy.

He’d need to be approved by the other owners and I don’t see them signing off on a commissioner using his position to outright buy a team.

Yea, that means Peter Marshall’s real name was “Peter LaCock”. Cant understand why a name like “Peter LaCock” wouldnt go over in Hollywood as a game show host. Hmmm…

I wonder whatever happened to him…but GOD knows what would happen if I googled that.

It’s a little far fetched for sure, but I’d say that whoever ends up buying the Mets, especially if they restructure their debt, will stand to at least double their investment in 5 years.

That is a very interesting thought Francis and one that cannot be discounted.

Cant say that scenario would favor us though but the opportunity to own the NYC NL franchise doesn’t come around but once or twice in a person’s life and if that’s what someone wants your scenario would be one way to grease the skids for sure.

Eh, I mean in a Law & Order kinda way it makes sense but even if the Mets lower payroll enough to get the cost of the team down its not going to be in Selig’s wheelhouse still. Don’t forget this man is 77 years old and is a Wisconsin native.

He was involve in the Braves as a stockholder when in Milwaukee and then with the Brewers, so his ownership roots of a team are very close to home. There’s a status of the guy in Milwaukee…

He wouldn’t be able to come up with the capital to outbid extremely wealthy nyc folks.

I just don’t see at 77 wanting to retire so you can buy a baseball team in shambles in the largest media market in the country. It just seems like a stretch ya know?

Also, the conclusion he draws in this post relies on the premise that it is unusual for team execs to serve on MLB committees.
