Padres Hire Omar Minaya
According to SI.com, the San Diego Padres have hired former Mets GM Omar Minaya.
Minaya, the former GM of the Montreal Expos, held the same post with the New York Mets from 2005 to 2010.
The Dominican-born Minaya was baseball’s first Latino general manager, and Angels owner Arte Moreno, who was baseball’s first Latino owner, was also considering Minaya for the GM job before hiring Jerry DiPoto.
Several other teams had expressed interest in bringing in Minaya.

What job did he get?
Scout director… he’s 3x better than the saber goon we got…
It’s funny because the man who hired Minaya, Josh Byrnes is a known sabermetric GM.
And that is why he hired minaya, he must’ve realized sabermetric hasn’t won sheeet, and he figure to go on a different route… hmmm.. how’s that for snark????
That doesn’t really make sense.
Are you suggesting Josh Byrnes will abandon the line of thinking that has earned him a job?
I like a mixture of ideas to come up with the best solution, maybe that is why he did it?
What doesn’t make sense. You stat folks only see in black and white. Hiring a polar opposite shows Byrnes has the intellectual capacity and the lack of supreme ego to have all types of thoughts in his organization. This allows him to make the best decisions. This is opposed to Alderson who overpaid to bring in a bunch of Sandy clones. His staff adds nothing except the ability to stroke his gigantic sense of false supremacy.
Izzy: First of all, I said
“I like a mixture of ideas to come up with the best solution, maybe that is why he did it?”
So I’m not sure how or why you’re claiming I don’t agree with the line of thinking you detail.
Secondly, can you tell me when and where Sandy Alderson has spoken as in depth about sabermetrics as Paul DePodesta?
Sandy Alderson didn’t get into baseball because of sabermetrics. He has been around long enough to be more neutral than saber driven. He’s much less of a saber GM than guys like Friedman-Byrnes-Hoyer-Theo-Beane or DePo when he was GM. Much less.
Its just the fact he’s in 1 sentence in a book many didn’t read that lead people to think he’s in front of a computer making decisions.
His staff adds nothing except the ability to stroke his gigantic sense of false supremacy.”
and for that izzy, THE CORE salutes you…
why are you following me around like a butt sniffing dog? You are a proven liar. You were caught LYING to the readership with the intent to purposely deceive them with you flat out LIE about Evan Roberts tweet about the Wright/Alfonso debate last week.
Don’t follow me around cuz I don’t debate with people who flat out LIE. Not my game – sorry
Lying because I felt he said Wright was better but Fonzie was better clutch and defense? That’s what he said.
You don’t own this site Bayonne, despite what you think… I’m allowed to comment on blogs just as you are.
If you don’t want me replying to you (which I was replying to Alex anyway) then don’t say dumb things.
Regarding who was better – Wright or Fonzie:
jessep November 23, 2011 at 8:43 am
Just as an FYI I tweeted Adam Rubin and Evan Roberts and both said David Wright. How many games has Evan Roberts been to live compared to Bayonne I wonder?
The actual tweet by Evan Roberts:
Wright statistically…Fonzie w/ glove/clutch RT @mbranda41 over entire 8 years they were a Met, who was a better player? wright or Alfonzo?
My followup back then:
Bayonne Mets Fan November 23, 2011 at 10:54 am
jessep flat out LIED to the readership about Evan Robert’s response
“Just as an FYI I tweeted Adam Rubin and Evan Roberts and both said David Wright. How many games has Evan Roberts been to live compared to Bayonne I wonder?”
Evan Robert’s response
Wright statistically…Fonzie w/ glove/clutch RT @mbranda41 over entire 8 years they were a Met, who was a better player? wright or Alfonzo?
which is what i said all along – Give me Fonzie when going to battle during a pennant race and I said i don’t care about Wright’s numbers and I said that Wright is probably statistically better
but that doesn’t matter. Fonzie is still better IMO.
jessep flat out LIES out here on the boards again but i’m not surprised because that is exactly the type of slimy, slithering, snake that guy is
So jessep knew the context of the debate and simply flat out LIED – what did he think nobody else follows JoeAndEvan?
First, if you look at his reply the way you do then he didn’t answer my question.
I read that as Wright is statistically a better player and Fonzie was a better clutch and glove player. I’m not sure what the proves. At the end of their careers, statistics will judge how good a player was. Baseball players aren’t in the HOF (not saying Wright will be) because they were clutch but didn’t have the other stats to back them up.
Second, under your line of thinking you’d rather have David Eckstein over Alex Rodriguez. There are 9 innings in a baseball game, one day you’ll understand that.
Yep,
Because I would take Fonzie over Wright anyday means that I would take Eckstein over A-Rod.
There you have it people. You see if for yourselves. Right after I showed how he flat out LIED jessep always does what he does best – spin people’s words, put words in people’s mouths, and simply just flat out lies to everybody.
There you go. That’s why many of us can’t stand this guy and don’t wish to debate anything with t
him. He’s a snake.
Okay “butt” you keep telling yourself that.
Andrew Marchand who covered the Mets during the peak of Fonzie’s career
“Over the entire 8 years they were a NY Met, who was an overall better player? Wright or Fonzie?”
Reply: “I’d say Wright has been better than Fonzie.”
By the way Bayonne
“why are you following me around like a butt sniffing dog?”
You realize you just compared yourself to a butt?
jessep lies and speaks out both ends of his mouth all the time. The archives prove it. He comments one way one day and then goes and writes a blog saying the opposite the next day. wilpon apologists don’t know any better, remember they rely on ponzi schemes.
Oh no doubt. It’s been proven – Omar Minaya is a MUCH better evaluator of talent than Google Boy Depodesta. It’s not even close, not even a debate.
We are actually WORSE in that department now.
By the wa,the mets will basically pay his salary this year… LOL.. i still had no idea what were the wilpons thinking when they extended omar on the verge of another collpase in 2008.. i mean, lol, man…
I’m pretty sure there had to be an out clause for this type of situation.
And I think they did it partly to avoid the media circus of having a lame duck GM
from adam rubin:
And, no, Padres not allowed to pay $1 since Omar makes the same $1.1 million or so either way. It’s supposed to be fair wage for job.
but i am sure YOU know more than him donal..
Alex, HOLY CRAP! You went and got a source for something you banged onto your keyboard! Granted, you’ll insult hi mas soon as he says something you disagree with, but this is a great start for you. I’m really proud of you.
Net thing you know, you’ll form rational a coherent arguments. then you won’t need to pretend you’re more than one person. And finally, you won’t need to insult, lie or threaten those who disagree with you about baseball. And on that day, Ill know my job is done.
That said, that is surprising. You’d think teams would not want to pay execs to help build other teams.
‘i still had no idea what were the wilpons thinking when they extended omar on the verge of another collpase in 2008′
Understatement, for sure.
I don’t think any Met fan understood this at the time. If the Wilpons had waited until the end of the season – the second season in a row we were eliminated at the 11th hour – do you think they would have extended him at all? Or maybe not with the years/money they gave him?
I wonder…..
When asked mid season? late season? if Omar was still their boy, Wilpon responded with his infamous ‘will the sun come out tomorrow’ quote. End of that season, Minaya is cut loose.
To me, the big difference between when that quote was uttered and the end of the season was Madoff. I still believe the Wilpons are in bed with Selig to try and hold onto the franchise. Part of that deal was cutting Omar lose and bringing Sandy in.
Good luck Omar.
Agreed – all the best
Me too. All the best Omar.
You always had the Mets bast interest in mind with your signings, trades and rehires. I’ve defended you over the years to those fans who criticized your re-signing of Luis Castillo. When all the facts are on the table, it was a good move at the time. So many fans never looked into the competitive details of why Omar went for four years at about $25 Mil. But it was the right move at the time prospectively. It was wrong to only those who look in the rear view mirror.
Good luck to you Omar, I hope you learned from your successes and failures in New York.
I also would like to wish good luck to Omar. He may have had his mistakes and boondooggles, but he always had the success of the Mets at his heart. I think Omar is a good man and well-intentioned. He certainly had his limitations and could mess-up with the best of them. But his intentions were always good and he had the fans at heart. He did bring some very good players to New York and we can be grateful for that since it will now be a long time to wait for anything like that to occur under the present administration. Once again, Good Luck, Omar!
I have no hard feelings for Omar, and I wish him the best in his new job. BTW I also would take Fonzi over Wright anytime, anywhere.
