Orioles Sign Endy Chavez To One Year Deal

Former Met Endy Chavez is headed to the Baltimore Orioles according to Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun.

Chavez will earn $1.5 million in 2012 with the potential to earn another $500,000 in performance bonuses.

Chavez, 33, played in 83 games last season with the Texas Ranger, batting .301 with five homers, ten stolen bases and 37 runs scored in 256 at-bats.

The Mets were reportedly interested in bringing Chavez back, but Endy may have become too costly for the cash-strapped Mets who seem to be at their spending limit.

Chavez enjoyed his best year as a Met in 2006, when he drove in 42 runs, stole 12 bases and set career highs in batting average (.306) and on-base percentage (.348), but is best known for making one of the greatest defensive plays in postseason history; a leaping catch at the wall to rob Scot Rolen of a home run in Game 7 of the National League Championship Series. Chavez then threw the ball into the infield for an inning-ending double play.

  • Chavez to the Orioles…I’ll file this under who gives a f##k. Thanks for the update.
Be sure to keep us informed of the whereabouts of former Met great Bernard Gilkey also.

    • team fan sites usually report on the doings of past members, especially ones who may have done something prominent during their stay here.

That’s what team fan sites do.

      • Must have missed the report on this fan site of the Phillies signing Pat Misch and Raul Valdes or Henry Blanco signing with the D-backs and Jason Pridie signing with the A’s. They are also “past members”…sure, they didn’t make 1 amazing (and, as it turns out meaningless) catch in the playoffs but they were poor-to-mediocre players who would have not played much on most other teams just like Chavez.

        • Endy Chavez’s famous catch is probably the reason why Mets fans have a place in their hearts to him today. So, um, yeah..that’s probably it.

And Merry Christmas to you too

          • Agreed…that catch was famous and a thing of beauty. Of course, about 15 minutes later that catch turned out to be meaningless, other than prolonging the Mets’ season for a few minutes. Great catch, very nice to watch…done in a losing effort. I also noticed that this site seems to follow “the doings” of Ty Wigginton fairly closely, sure, he came up in the Mets’ system, but he only played 1 full season and 2 partial seasons with the Mets, and was a mediocre batter and a poor defender. Just saying…Chavez and Wigginton weren’t the Strawberry’s and Piazza’s of this organization…does anyone really care where they sign as opposed to Pat Misch, who actually pitched fairly well in 2010 for the Mets and wasn’t really given much of a shot in 2011, but pitches great in AAA every year and could have actually been useful to this team today, considering the state of this organization. Maybe we should forget about the mediocre players of the past, who may or may not have had 1 shining moment in a losing effort, and focus on the current players who are affecting this team.

        • Hey Nolan, these might help you.

We also reported when Omar went to San Diego, let me know if you’re also interested in former Mets execs posts and I’ll leave you a link to that too.

          • Oh and Merry Christmas to you too.

            • All this Merry Christmas has me thinking about the tv gangster in Home Alone 2 where he says

“Merry Christmas, you filthy animal.” followed by the rattle of his machine gun.

              • Nice, but actually Hojo should of went with the original line after he shoved those posts down that Trade Wright dude’s throat. Keep the change you filthy animal.

          • I stand corrected. Fine job.

  • The fact that we don’t have the money to sign endy chavez should tell you all you need to know how the wilpons have run the franchise into the ground.

  • Endy probably wouldn’t have cost anymore than Bonilla is.

  • If Sandy’s just looking to fill roster spots for the short-term, he could have done a lot worse than bringing Endy back. It might have brought some holiday cheer to a sentimental fan base starving for any type of silver lining this Christmas and Hanukkah. But of course, Endy makes above six figures and that’s are far as Fred and Jeff’s sentiment can go.

I think we should all thank TIME for naming us the person of the year. After all, the most vocal of all the protest movements has been the group shouting “SELL THE TEAM!”. :)

  • The unoccupy Citi Field movement is gaining steam.

  • Does either Wilpon take a salary from the Mets as compensation?

  • Just curious if anyone knows if Jeff Wilpon takes a salary from the Mets as compensation for his work as Executive Vice President?

  • No offense to Endy but a feel good story every year is certainly much more than Met fans deserve……… The fact that he’s a better player than Torres is irrelevant as well since lord sandy made a trade and is hawking the greatness of his “big” trade this Winter, there was no room for an Endy making more than the minimum.

  • Endy would’ve signed with the Mets but the best they could offer was deferred payments on the league minimum of $500,000 + 1/4 of the profits from autographed pictures of “THE CATCH” from the 2006 NLCS. :) Merry Christmas Mets Fans!
