Before Mejia went down, Warthen was quoted as saying that Mejia's throwing motion was too stressful for him to be a starter. He wanted him to be a reliever, but somehow his advice was ignored.

I'm not a huge Warthen fan, but he was dead on in this case.

I wouldn't try to make Mejia a starter if he's not built for it.

francis,

Mejia has been a starter throughout his whole career until he was rushed to the MLB pen...Pete had it correct you let the kid start til he shows he can do it...Bullpen arms are not hard to come by, but quality starters are.

Warthen is a hack!

Thank You Petey Pete

I have been tired of hearing these so called minor league experts whom work for different publications(and the bloggers that love them) go on about Mejia and Familia will be good bullpen arms. When both players have excelled in the starting rotation. You said it best let them continue to start and if/when they fail move them to the pen. Tommy Lassorda felt the same way about Pedro Martinez who was 5'11 170lbs.(most say he's smaller than that), and turned Pedro into a reliever. If it werent for the trade to the Expos his Hall of fame career most likely would have never been.

Let Mejia start and please Mets fans dont take any pitching advice from Dan Warthen all he has ever done is ruin pitchers arms. And his big project has been Pelfrey and we know how that has worked out...Keep Warthen away from the young guys....

Good write up as usual Petey Pete...I will no longer listen to what they say about people with two 1st names O_o

I was at Mejia's last pitched game in AAA. It was a very cold night, it never got over 40 degrees and he was struggling with his control and velocity. He eventually came out of the game after about 4 innings and 70 pitches. He was missing the strike zone a lot, but not by much and nobody could get a hit off him.

It's a realistic chance that pitching long innings in that extrema cold is why he got hurt. While I love having the Mets AAA in Buffalo, it has to hurt playing in those extreme weather conditions.

While you don't want to cancel any games, they never should have been playing that game.

I agree Pete they screwed the pooch on Mejia.

I makes zero sense to turn a promising Starter into a reliever unless he has issues with facing an order the second or third time around or if he can't get past the 5th inning. That would suggest failed starter and ONLY THEN do you try to make the best of the bad situation and try to salvage the player as a reliever.

This has been the problem far too long with the Mets. They look at a kid's stuff and decide from that he is not good for anything but the pen. Not enough Pitches whatever.
Why not try and teach him some new pitches?

Mejia's best destiny is as a starter. If he shows he doesn;'t have enough pitches to get through the order two or three times only then do I entertain putting him in the pen.
And thats only after I try to teach him a splitter or cutter to see if he can get that extra pitch to throw off the batters.

They rushed him and didn't develop him, merely promoted him and thats why he has the issues he has had.
When your overmatched you try to overpitch and overpitching is what leads to arm and elbow troubles requiring surgery.

Like him or not, Rubin did us a favor by breaking that Bernazard story. It eventually lead to the removal of all 3 - Omar included.
