Mets Prepared To Offer Jose Reyes “Carl Crawford” Err “Jason Bay” Money
More news on the Reyes front
In case you missed it yesterday, Jose Reyes was apparently flying to Miami today after eating a cheese steak in Philly on Tuesday, but that was debunked 20 minutes later… Compelling stuff…
According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, the Mets are prepared to offer Jose Reyes “Carl Crawford” err “Jason Bay” money.
He says the Mets would do a five-year deal with Reyes for $80 million dollars.
Yeah, that’ll get it done…

An article by

So he’d make more $ than Tulo through 2014, the same amount as Jeter in 2012, 1 mil less in 2013 and more $ than Hanley through 2014.
I’m not seeing why 5/80 is such an insult that others see?
What SS out there is making more than $16mil annually over the next 3 years?
Yeah why is it no surprise you missed the fact that he would get paid more than all of them EVERY year with the Marlins!
Probably because neither you no I know what the official Marlins offer was. If it was so amazing, he’d be a Miami Marlin right now would he not?
i guess we will wait and see metsie.. one thing i am certain of, i rather alderson shut us up and reyes signs here, then reading one of those ridiculous post about how alderson did what he could or a list of potential players we can draft with jose’s picks
LOL these guys are a friggin joke!
From now on I will call him Sandy “TOO MUCH” Slasherson!
LMAO.. i said this months ago, the mets and alderson as the leading man will low ball reyes, then he’ll collect his precious draft picks he desires.. funny how this article and news comes a day after sandy claims he wants franchise players… yeah, good start sandy..
He mumbled one word that the microphones missed. He really said he wants CHEAP franchise players.
cheap “Franchise player” minor leaguers was unheard as well!
i know this is just “reports”, but given what this man is doing, is fair to say he’ll reversed this franchise back 5 more years… he’s excited about santana becase if healthy and productive he can trade him as well…
I’d love to reverse the franchise back 5 years. 2006 here we come!
I find it so funny how people just completely disregard all that is going on with the Wilpons and their financial mess and all that is going on with them and MLB. Yeah because Alderson doesn’t want to spend money for the sake of it. People are not paying attention.
Oh please what about what he said hinted that the Wilpons are a problem?
You know it’s just so rediculous the prioblem isn’t that he isnt’t spending if the wilpons are a problem then just say it and stop LYING to us that he is intending on building a good team and simply admit he is here for one thing only to gut the team.
Stop with the dumb lies about franchise players and trying to win when his actions and offers show he is out and out lying!
Wilpon didn’t make those quotes Sandy did!
And he is full of it!
So stop trying to put it all on Wilpon it’s not about WHAT we are doing it is about the BULL it is being called by the guys who are doing it!
Are you saying that Alderson should throw the wilpons under the bus if the problems in fact stem from their money trobules?
Are you also saying that Alderson is just being cheap and has no intention of building a winner? If the Wilpons have no money problems, why on earth would he have been kept around?
looks like yes on both counts.
You know what…here is what he should do…
trade bay, agree to pay 10-12 Mil of his salary for dog scraps!
Give the 5 Mil he saved to Reyes and sign him!
You guys are absolute IDIOTS. OF COURSE you have to give a modest to lowball offer at first and work your way up. WHY WOULD YOU START OFF WITH A HIGH OFFER?
Sometimes its hard to fathom how inept met fans are nowadays.
DUH because the time to make THAT offer was before he already GOT a higher offer from someone else back when you had exclusive rights and if it was good enough now would have been good enough then?
I mean whose the idiot around here?
Certainly not the folks who realize that once you LET the market set the price you can no longer get the player for LESS!
Maybe your new to this, but Alderson repeatedly said he would not make a preemptive offer and that he would let other teams set the market. That’s what makes this news strange. And if you have a problem with it go complain to Heyman why are you busting my chops for? That said, I’ll be on the phone with Alderson in about five hours and hopefully I’ll be able to find out if there’s any truth to this.
Talk about kool aid drinking! LOL
Joe if that is the offer, and I have no reason the believe diferent at this point then it just goes to show that all these statements from Alderson have been as I predicted!
He was going to wait until Reyes got his best offer then tell the press he was willing to pay just slightly less but since he got more he had to let Reyes go!
If he had made this offer before he might have gotten away with it.
All he had to do was propose that deal suring exclusive rights and say to reyes thats the best we can do but keep us up to date in case the situation changes for us and he would be off the hook right now!
He refused under some lame excuse about bidding against himself when the bottom line truth here is he didn’t want to BID at all!
Just figure out what the price is and say Oh i’m sorry that was just slightly more than I was willing to NOT pay!
The old Pick a number from one to 10…I pick 8, oh I’m sorry the number was 7 routine!
Agreed on the preemptive offer part. Plus he wouldn’t have been bidding against himself anyway had he used the exclusive negotiating window owners bargained for in the last CBA. And even if Reyes would have tested free agency anyway, Alderson would have looked like the good guy for making a preemptive offer. He dropped the ball there.
As for this Heyman news, I’m not buying it. Sounds fishy to me. If Alderson leaked these numbers than it means Reyes went to him with an offer he’s about to sign because he told us last month he will not tender an offer until Reyes was done shopping and got back to him. I heard him say that with my own ears.
Alderson offered to deal during the season but Reyes declined because he wanted to hit the open market. The exclusive window meant nothing in this situation.
It really has nothing to do with my point which is that a preemptive offer would have put the Mets in a good light regardless if it were rejected. It would have eliminated all this rhetoric and anger that now permeates in the fan base. Any offer he makes now will seem half-hearted at best.
“It would have eliminated all this rhetoric and anger that now permeates in the fan base”
Really Joe? You honestly believe that?
The anger in the fan base stems from people who will despise everything the current front office does no matter what. An early bird offer would have done nothing to solve that and there would be the same people complaining today. “Well it should have been this …. “
agreed. they would have just wailed about insulting reyes or being a sham bid. Something along those lines.
So what? Look at these comments. Do they seem well thought out and rational? Do you think anything he does or could have done differently would make most of this lunacy go away?
If he had made that offer and Reyes rejected it, he would have been “insulting Reyes by lowballing him and embarrassing the club again by begging Reyes to stay” or some other such nonsense.
So, no, he needn’t put himself in a weaker position simply to appease the idiot masses.
Reyes offered to deal last offseason season!
Sandy leads Reyes in the I won’t Negotiate by a score of 2-1!
Joe ive been reading your site since 2006 and am an occasional commenter around here so I guess you can say I’m NOT new to this.. however will you really believe everything the media tells you? Why in the world would Sandy Alderson release this statement if it wasn’t to benefit him in the standpoint between him and Reyes’ agent? Obviously if he heard about the offers from Miami being in the same neighborhood as reports have said that the 6 year 90 million offer they gave was completely off.. Why would Sandy completely let it slip that he would offer the same thing? I see this as a negotiating tactic. 5 years 80 million is not enough. You know that. I know that. Sandy most DEFINENTLY knows that. For the Reyes market to cease even before the GM meetings end and for you guys to think the time to lowball was in the past.. you’re wrong. The time to start negotiating is NOW and why would you start with a 5 year 90 million dollar offer if that is your original goal? BTW say hi to Sandy for me. I’m one of the few who thinks hes actually competent and whatnot. I wasn’t criticizing your post but rather the responses the other mets fan have been clamoring about. Sandy Slasherson? Really? He CLEARLY said he wasn’t here to turn this team into a small-market franchise.
I would see how much of Bays contract we would have to eat to trade him. Trade Pagan and Pelfrey and use the money they save with all three towards paying Reyes. Which of these 4 players would you rather have on the Mets?
I would guess somewhere between “all of it” and “every last dime”
Or take back another bad deal, and if they do that, it better be a pitcher.
Adam Rubin
Sandy Alderson will speak with reporters in hour to preview winter meetings. Stay tuned for tweets, and post-session wrap on ESPNNewYork.com
it will be just more hot air lies, he is not trying to make trades or sign anyone so he has plenty of time to spin b.s and hope the bloggers sell it as true because they like the access. anything sandy says you can guarantee the reverse is happening. last place sandy to the mic to say nothing relevant again. cannot wait.
You are angry and frustrated and I get it. But here’s a few things you should know.
1. Little of this is really Alderson’s doing, blame ownership.
2. It’s any GM’s job to promote the team even if it’s a bad team.
3. Most Mets bloggers have not sold their integrity for access. I certainly haven’t. And while most bloggers got their access this year, I got mine in 2009 with Minaya, I don’t owe anybody anything..
‘Blame Ownership’.
Bingo.
And I don’t know why it’s so difficult for a percentage of Met fans to understand this.
As long as the Wilpons own this team, and are in bed with Selig giving them every advantage to hold onto the team – it isn’t going to matter who the FO consists of.
Joe,
Thing is, everybody – all of us are talking about what we think we can do to improve the Mets but we don’t have a budget. Isn’t a budget supposed to be public info? I’m not sure.
Don’t all teams make their budget public info? I wish we know what this team’s budget was
no team makes there budget public. Nor should they.
If you are talking about contracts, those do come out (after the fact). Sites like Cott’s are great for looking at financial commitments. But, those go up after the fact (and no, I have no idea where they get the info from).
anyway, contract terms always seem to get announced anyway. They aren’t secret. Just the amount they have above payroll is (and at this time of year, how much they have available to spend).
I would actually be PO’d at the GM if they did state that publicly (other than giving a vauge range with lots of wiggle room)
i’m not talking about contracts.
I know the difference between a contract and a budget…::rolls eyes::
We should have some idea of what the Mets budget is – not NO idea. That has never, ever happened before.
What team has made their actual budget public?
NY Mets…It’s somewhere between 100-110 Mil INCLUDING Amatuer draft signing bonus’!
Guess you missed the announcement!
As I suspected, Sandy Alderson just called BS on Heyman’s proposed Reyes deal, confirming what I said that he would not make an offer until Reyes finishes shopping and gets back to him for a counter offer.
He also called the Posada deal a complete fabrication with no truth to it at all. He never called Posada or his agent to discuss anything.
Lennon: Summary of Alderson: No on Posada, No progress on Reyes, reliever market still developing
I agree with Jessep. Even if Heyman was just speculating or guessing, I think that is how Sandy and the Marlins right now value Reyes and how he should be valued. The Phils, Brewers and Tigers don’t even value him that much. You have to factor in Reyes lingering hammy issue and all the time he’s missed the past 3 yrs and the fact that he is speed oriented lead-off hitter and not some big, impact HR RBI bat in the middle of the line-up. We’re not talking about common hamstring pulls here. This man had serious surgery for a torn right hamstring and that is never going to be 100%. I think Sandy is playing this beautifully. Why should the Mets bid against themselves? The Marlins are no slam dunk for Reyes. The Marlins are seriously interested in Heath Bell , Mark Buehrle and Yoenis Cespedes and IMO, the Marlins aren’t give Reyes 20MM per plus sign at least 2 of those other guys. Plus, you have to factor in problem child Hanley who really doesn’t want to move from SS. Forget the Crawford and Werth contracts last season. IMO, the big 3 of Pujols, Fielder and Reyes are going to have to settle for less than they are asking or seeking because the $$$ isn’t out there and the Yanks, Red Sox, Phils and old Mets aren’t going crazy for any of these guys.
No way $80 mil 5yrs will work. Somebody will pay more.
I have to say that it seems that Sandy is doing “something” so that he can say that he did. He can’t really believe that Reyes is going to accept that. I suppose this shows that we will likely lose Jose.
