Mets Offseason Targets: C Jason Jaramillo
Another player I believe would be an interesting pickup for the Mets is the recently non-tendered catcher Jason Jaramillo, formerly of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Jaramillo, 29, has been hampered by injuries in the past and the rigors of being an everyday catcher are seemingly too much for him to handle. But he may prove to be a very capable backup for the Mets.
As you can see, Jaramillo put up some good numbers last season for the Bucs, batting a robust .326 with a .751 OPS and a 109 OPS+ in 23 games last season. Very small sample size yes, but even his manager last season, Clint Hurdle, was digging his more aggressive approach at the plate.
Jaramillo worked with Pirates hitting coach Gregg Ritchie prior to the start of last season and the results were far better than anyone expected, and Jaramillo even had a couple of big game winning hits for the Pirates last season in his role as backup catcher.
Defensively, there were no complaints and Jaramillo threw out 39% of base runners in the minors, which would be a significant improvement over the current cast at catcher for the Mets. Additionally, he is said to have a solid reputation with his pitchers who love his game-calling.
The switch-hitting catcher became expendable once the Pirates signed former Met Rod Barajas this offseason coupled with their decision to have prospect Michael McKenry back him up.
Obviously, Jaramillo would be a very inexpensive signing and should easily fit into the Mets budget, but more importantly he could provide some depth to a position that desperately needs some right now. If either Josh Thole or Mike Nickeas go down with an injury, the Mets would find themselves in some pretty dire straits. Going with Jaramillo to backup Thole, while keeping Nickeas on tap in Buffalo would make a lot of sense.
Thoughts?

An article by 72MetsFan

does sandy look at the surgery log at the local ER and figure out who to go after off that? players off disappointing seasons and surgery should just fly to queens when they get out of rehab, they know they will have a contract waiting.
Did you actually read this blog, or just going off on your childish rant saying the same thing every day,
The AUTHOR was looking at this player and asking thoughts, that’s all.
Jason Jaramillo, over his three year major league career, has a CS% of 30%. His overall minor league CS% is 34%
How does that compare to Thole? 30% sounds pretty bad to me.
Look at it this way. He would be a significant upgrade over Ronny Paulino, so in that regard he’d be an improvement over last season. With the loss of Reyes, I think we can make up a lot of it if we can more production in as many other places as we can. And by the way, I think Ruben Tejada is going to surprise alot of people this season!
Hey we agree on this one. I had him in my dumpster diving post earlier in the week.
Being a Mets fan these days is like going through garbage on the streets for plastic bottles and cans. Recycling everyone ele’s rejects and trash hoping to find a gem. Pitiful for a team in the greatest city in the world. Wilpons SELL THE TEAM! Stop borrowing money! Stop the madness and sell the team!
So are you saying that MOST teams do not go out and look for backups? This would be a good guy to look at regardless of their financial state. IF they had money, who would you go after for a backup catcher?
Please no.. this is another Thole.. hell, a light hitting version of thole if there is such a thing…. Pass.. but knowing sandy.. and the $70 million we lost… and the owners being broke ….. etc….
Don’t count this guy out
He’s not intended to replace Thole, only last year’s backup Paulino. You seem to cry about anything this team does why do you even follow them at all?
You seen him play much? Light-hitting version of Thole? Have you seen him play defense? Is he as bad as Thole? Is he a better hitter than Nicki?
I think bringing in Jason Jaramillo to at least challenge Mike Nickeas for the back-up C role in ST makes a lot of sense. He’s credible both offensively and defensively for a back-up C. He’s a switch hitter. He earned only 423K last season and is not eligible for arbitration until 2013.
The article has no credibility and ignores the trueth. The author raves about Jaramillo’s great numbers failing to mention he has all if 43 ABs… 43 at bats is nothing…… The article is a fraud. Must have been written by fred/saul/buddy and of course approved and released by little jeffy sitting at home crying and praying that da da doesn’t have to sell.
Off topic- Acc. to Heyman, the Mets have talked to both Ronny Cedeno & Jack Wilson about their back-up MI opening.
cedeno still around? Not sure if he is better than Wilson at this point (hell, I am better than Wilson!), but they do need a MI bench guy that can legitimately play SS on a semi-regular basis.
