Jim Duquette and Others Auditioning To Call Mets Games In 2012
Mike Puma reports on some progress in the WFAN radio booth…
A source from the Wall Street Journal told me that the Mets will give the job as Howie Rose’s co-host to whom ever is willing to work for three hots (at Shake Shack) and a cot at the holding cell at Citi Field which has remained vacant since Francisco Rodriguez moved out.
Original Post 12/17
I caught this in the NY Post this morning:
It’s doubtful Wayne Hagin will be back for a fifth year as Howie Rose’s partner in the Mets radio booth. Hagin’s contract has expired and WFAN has been interviewing possible replacements. Hagin previously called Rockies, Cardinals, Giants and A’s games.
I never really took to Hagin…
If they do replace him, I hope they give Howie a good co-pilot, but to be honest I wish they’d let Rose fly solo ala Vin Scully…

They won’t let Howie fly solo, nobody does that except Scully, and he doesn’t do full games anymore. I hope they just finally give it to Ed Coleman.
Just don’t let Duquette any where near Mejia, Familla, Harvey or Wheeler.
Wayne has a good voice and knows baseball. I too never warmed up to his way of broadcasting. He’s very prescriptive and somewhat critical at times. I just want a person who is knowledgeable and doesn’t frequently second guess the manager’s strategy. Wayne scores high on the first part but isn’t so good on the second part.
P.S.; I wish Wayne the best of good fortune in whatever his next job is.
P.P.S.: Does anyone think the decision to not renew was driven by cost considerations? I’m not sure who really foots the bill for the broadcasters.
In other words you want a “shill”?, I’d want my announcers to talk about all facets of the game, including the second guess because it is a part of a fan’s rooting interest.
Wayne just needs better balance. When his emphasis is on what’s wrong, what’s questionable, or repeatedly on a runner’s mistake, for example, it’s overdone. He needs to emphasize the game of baseball. Most fans know the alternatives, having listened and watched hundreds if not thousands of games.
That’s true Des but on radio you can’t see what the broadcaster see’s and Wayne did a great job describing plays to his audience. If a player made a baserunnng blunder I want to hear about it.I hate bland announcers who are afraid to criticize. I also like to hear the play by play guy’s 2nd guessing a managers decision if it’s questionable like Collins putting on a bunt every time we get a leadoff double.
Howie Rose COULD carry a broadcast by himself, but I doubt they’ll leave it all up to him. Hopefully WFAN picks up a great voice, but more importantly, a great baseball mind.
I never felt comfortable listening to Wayne. He always seemed out of place, like an out-of-town broadcaster filling in.
I think Howie could fly solo. In addition to Vin Scully, Uecker used to go solo, too, for the Brewers.
I feel like much of the time, Howie has carried it by himself! Maybe it’s just me, but you don’t hear Wayne too much often times in games for a few minutes…
It’s almost impossible to think that Rose could do the broadcast by himself. Games go on way too long and you need that other guy to take over from time to time.
The old timers are a breed apart and they simply do not make broadcasters like that anymore. Murphy actually preferred to work alone and even had issues with Cohen when he was partnered with him.
Radio guys are much harder to find than TV guys and it is becoming a lost art. You don’t have pictures you have to speak them in radio and that is why Cohen is so good on TV because he had a pretty good teacher to draw from.
I would say it might be ok to add one of the TV guys for an inning or two to the radio broadcast but all I really care about is they do not bring Fran Healy back! Him or Lorne “He is in the hole” Brown
If they do I would rather miss the game than listen to it!
I’m glad he’s gone, I found him to be awful, couldn’t stand his voice at all. He and Suzy W should go work together………
Kay, can we throw Fran Healey in with those two?
Amen as well as Joe Buck!
Does it make me a horrible person if I happen to like Buck?
I mean, when he is actually calling a game and not trying to be Bob Costas light.
Yes. Yes it does.
Horrible
I wouldn’t worry about your feelings on Buck really swaying anyone on thier opinion of you! LOL
Why don’t they groom Burkhardt he seems to be a good candidate?
You don’t really need an analyst for radio what you need are two guys who are good an PBP because that alone fills up the air time!
In TV you need the Analyst only because Video handles most of the description and you just need someone to explain it.
They should hire the kid who did PBP with Gary Keith & Ron 2 years ago.
As part of the cost cutting measures, Mr Met is now pulling double duty as mascot and play by play radio announcer.
I think the reason Hagin was let go was to avoid his 1,000 innings called option from vesting.
They should have tried trading him first. At least get some audio cable or something.
They should have a contest, like WFAN fantasy phenom.
They do it for the national anthem.
