Heyman Confirms A’s Want Huge Haul For Gio Gonzalez

Confirming what I posted here last night, Jon Heyman reported today via Twitter, that the A’s are seeking a huge package of prospects in return for starting pitcher Gio Gonzalez,

Two things you cant take to the bank about the Mets this offseason:

1. Mets wont pay huge dollars for any free agents.

2. Mets wont give up huge package of prospects in any trade.

They are in “No Spend” and “Accumulation” mode.

This is why I found yesterday’s rumor that the Mets were interested in Gio Gonzalez strange.

Original Post 12/15

According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, the Mets are among the teams talking with the Oakland A’s about starting pitcher Gio Gonzalez.

Rosenthal also tweets that the Nationals also want Gonzalez and are keying in on him and Danks of the White Sox after losing out on Mark Buehrle to the Marlins. The Mariners, Marlins, Reds, Red Sox and Rangers also have interest.

Gonzalez went 16-12 with a 3.12 ERA and 197 strikeouts in 202 innings pitched during the 2011 season. The 26 year old left-hander was also named to the All-Star team last season.

This is strange. The A’s reportedly have a very high asking price for Gonzalez and any Mets offer would most likely begin with Jon Niese just for starters.

The Detroit Tigers balked when the A’s demanded top prospects Jacob Turner, Nick Castellanos and Drew Smyly in return for Gonzalez.

  • “Mets Checking In On Gio Gonzalez”

When did gio Gonzalez get hospitalized?

Cause that is the only way the Mets are checking in on him anywhere.

Now back to “real” Metsie’s news,

How is the Jack Wilson negotiations going?

Is Sandy trying to convince Jack to take below the veteran’s minimum, or is he trying to pay him in Mets stock? :D

  • I think the Mets actually match up well, with Niese, Murphy and some of the kids. I still think they are looking for higher ceiling type guys, so Mets won’t be an option, but this would be a good move to add Gio.

    • Of coursae adding Gio would be a good move…… That’s why it ain’t happening. And if you think that Niese Murphy etc are a good match for the A’s then you habven’t been paying attention. The A’s don’t want guys close to arbitration or even with any big league service time.

      • You MAY be right. I think however, they need some of both. I think they would look to turn Gio into prospects AND guys who could step in and hold the tide until later. Similar to how the Mets supposedly if they trade Niese are looking for prospects AND a placeholder.

      • No, fanboy, you misread. He’s 26, not 36. That will probably make him a bad move for you now.

    • CONSIDERING THE COMPETITION DIFFERENTIAL BEWTWEEN THE AL WEST & NL EAST I DON’T PERCEIVE GONZALEZ A HUGE UPGRADE OVER NIESE. AFTER I READ OAKLAND WANTED NIESE+DAVIS FOR GONZALEZ, I NEARLY CJOKED IN ASTONISHMENT THAT ALDERSON DIDN’T BLOCK HIS PHONE FRROM BEANE CALLS.

IT CONCERNS ME THAT ALDERSON HASN’T REALLY SEEN DAVIS PLAY FOR MORE THAN 1 MONTH & HAS MISSED THE FAN POPULARITY THE KID HAS DEVELOPED IMO, DAVIS MORESO THAN WRIGHT SHOULD HAVE THE “UNTOUCHABLE” LABEL.

      • 62, Absolutely Davis should be on the untouchable list. SA’s mgmt of the roster is scary and a midnight massacre is possible any day of the week with this FO.

        • MASK, REMEMBER HOW RECENTLY IT WA THAT OUR C-UH-OH THUMPED HIS CHEST POST COLLAPSE DEMANDING RECOGNOITION FOR MAINTAINING A TOP 5 PAYROLL? WONDER WHERE HE’LL BE HIDING AS WE JOIN THE BOTTOM 5 IN ’12? I’M EXPECTING AN ACTUAL PAYROLL BET 75-80M NOT THE 100-110M SANDY “PRETENDS” HE’S HAVING DIFFICULTY WITH AS THEY COUILD EASILY HAVE PAID REYES 22M & STILL COME IN @ BUDGET OR LESS.
NOW INSTEAD OF JEFF WISHING TO EMULATE THE NYY WE’VE GOT FRED BEARING HIS SIGHTS ON THE PIRATES! OMG!
          HERE’S MY DIRE 2012 PREDICTIONS: RECORD:64-98, ATTENDANCE, 1.6-1.7M
          LOSSES FROM OPERATIONS: $50M
WHO COULD HAVE EVER BELIEVED NY WOULD BE SO CURSED BY UTTER LACK OF LEADERSHIP OR SPORTS OPERATIONS EXPERIENCE?

  • he is under control until 2015 i believe which i think would appeal a great deal to sandy .. gio only made $420k last year so he’s right in line with niese .. just a matter of what kind of package it would take .. my guess is the mets probably wouldn’t be interested since knowing billy beane would want an arm, leg & a major organ .. but it can’t hurt to find out the cost

  • I believe Sandy has an edge in negotiations because of his past relationship with one young Billy Beane.

    • Richard, That is a good point.. after all, saber billy was created by saber sandy… with that being said, if we end up get him, i think him in the NL could be a really good pitcher..

  • Well the pitching staff of the Mets needs a top line guy who is affordable and since Santana is assumed to be a shadow of himself. Have a potential 16-20 game winner at the top of the staff who save a lot of embarrassment. The package of Niese, Murphy,Familia and another top minor league position player may get it done.

    • Murphy, Familia, Niese + prospect?!!!

      Ahhhhhhhh…No.

If we were to move Niese, it should be for top-drawer outfield talent for players such as SF’s Gary Brown or Toronto’s Marisnick, or for Colorado’s catching prospect Wilin Rosario.

I see absolutely no point in trading two young talented pitchers, one a lefty & the other a righty, a very talented hitter in Daniel Murphy PLUS another prospect for another young lefty who has all of one All Star game under his belt.

We have a plethora of young pitching on the rise. Let’s get something that we really need.

I might trade Niese, Familia, Murphy & one other prospect for Baltimore’s Adam Jones plus a Baltimore catching prospect, but not for Gio Gonzalez.

      Didn’t we beat him?

  • i wonder what it would take to get him.. if i am sandy as long as they don’t mention familia and harvey, i’m all ears..

    • You have to include Wheeler in that discussion as well….

I think that maybe a package of Niese, Murphy and our best offensive prospect?

      • Man, that just seems a little steep especially for a kid who is not currently the ace of a staff and hovers between a #2 and #3. Murphy/Niese/Flores? I look at this compared to what we gave up for Santana and can’t help but think it’s a seller’s market indeed on this kid right now.

        • Well it just depends on how you look at it. Murphy has no position with us unless you really believe that he can play 2B everyday. Niese’s highest ceiling appears to be what Gio gave in the AL last year. Flores, looks like he has a lot of potential but most likely will not remain at SS and is 3B blocked? Also, not sure that I agree that Gio was not the ace of their staff. A 3.12 ERA 202 innings and 16 wins at 25 is certainly ace like numbers to me.

          • Yeah, I know. You do make good points.
He’s under team control until 2015? So there is that. Then again, so is Niese, I believe.

            • Right, the A’s angle would be that they get Niese for the same amount of time while also upgrading their offense with Murphy and Flores.

    • Brandon nimmo?!? no way.. i am sorry but i will go on a hunger strike if they get rid of nimmo!!

      • Can’t trade him anyway Alex. That was not who I was thinking. Thinking more of Wilmer Flores.

      • :-) i’m glad you didn’t detect my sarcasm….

        • Oh I did.

          • LOL, of course you did, but in all seriousness, i try to hold on to niese as much as i can, i can see wilmer flores + murphy and a pitching prospect for gio.. after all, sabermetrics and moneyball and all that crap billy beane knows is due to sandy, you’d think the man has the upper hand..

            • Here’s my issue, I would not part with Wheeler, Harvey or Familia really under many circumstances at all. After that there is not a lot to talk about pitching wise YET. I know some scouts were high on Fulmer but he can’t be traded yet either.

We have all talked about Niese but if he has to go in a deal that realistically prospect wise won’t hurt you while netting a guy would would be the clear ace of your staff for at least 4 years then I have no problems in sending him down the road.

  • Okay few questions for everybody above who has said “what they’d give”

The A’s just trade Trevor Cahill for basically a bag of prospects

Why would they trade Gio Gonzalez for Jon Niese who is just 1 year younger, Dan Murphy who is 5 months older than Gio or David Wright who is 2 years older than Gio and in his free agent year soon?

I’m not saying they wouldn’t or couldn’t be involved, I’m asking why would the A’s agree to a deal centered around those guys?

What does having Jon Niese do for them that Gio can’t? Gio at 24 was better than Niese was last year, so you have to agree that Gio could be better down the road than Niese so why would you do that?

I still don’t get why a team would center a trade around a guy like Murph who hasn’t hit the field since his 2nd severe knee injury?

I guess I just don’t understand why Gio would go for anything other than top prospects rather than guys his same age or older? Maybe he will, I don’t know but I don’t see how it would make sense

    • There are two angles to this. One the Mets would have to load the deal with Murphy, Flores and maybe even another offensive prospect. OR the Mets are only part of this by a 3 way trade with the Jays sending the Mets that Jays catching prospect as part of the deal.

      • In other words, maybe the Jays don’t need Niese if they are looking for Gio and the A’s don’t need a catching prospect but need someone to fill Gio’s spot… enter Mets.

  • i wonder if we can offer wright for gio?? have murphy play 3rd base, turner 2b, tejada SS and off we go.. we have pitching, just a matter of building our offense yet again.. by 2014 we can may have all this SP:
    Gio
    Familia
    Harvey
    Niese
    Wheeler
    Gorski
    Gee
    Mejia
    Fulmer
    Morris

Given of course they pan out to be good..

    • I think the Mets have committed to not moving Wright until at LEAST a time that his value increases. Also, I don’t think that is what the A’s are looking for at all. What good would David Wright do them when they have traded away Gio and Trevor? They are looking to stock pile prospects while the Angels and Rangers are blowing their wads.

    • You could but why would you?

Trading Wright now is selling low. From all the rumors we heard, when he was dangled the asking price was just too high. In order to maximize the trade potential, I’m sure they’re hoping he puts up more career like numbers in the first half of 2012. Better return mid season then, especially to a team that’s looking to make post season.

Have no idea if that’s the plan but it seems more logical.

      • Honestly they have no rush to trade him before the deadline in 2013. His value will not realistically be any lower and they would have gotten his “services” for an extra year during the rebuilding process. Because of that clause in his contract the acquiring team would get him for just as long in 2013 as they would if the Mets traded him this deadline.

      • Trading Wright for Gio saves money. I’d ask for a prospect in addition to Gio, but I would do it.

If you’re looking to trade Wright, Gio is alot better than the maybes you’ll get in a deadline deal.

Only problem for me is that Oakland is a serious pitchers park. I’d check out his splits before pulling the trigger.

I would acquire and hold on to any decent SP under 30 for the next 2 years.

        • Sorry but this is totally fiction and thinking in a “everybody wants to help the Mets” mind set.

Explain to me why Oakland who is shedding salary and only used to acquire soon to be FA’s because they’d get compensation would want David Wright for Gio even with a prospect or 2 added

          Seriously what is the point

Tell me without thinking like a Mets fan why in the WORLD you’d do that if you’re the A’s?

          http://articles.sfgate.com/2011-12-10/bay-area/30501345_1_jarrod-parker-oakland-craig-breslow

To save you time: “The A’s priority in any deals this winter is to acquire top-10 first-round picks and Parker, 23, was selected with the ninth pick in 2007 and was considered one of Arizona’s three best prospects. Oakland is trying to rebuild with an eye toward a possible new stadium in three years, and Parker presumably would be a major part of that rotation.”

How in the world does David Wright fit into that? He doesn’t. You can’t just create scenario’s that bit your best interest when they aren’t real. Paying David Wright $15mil and watching him inevitably walk for no comp picks is NOT in Oakland’s best interest. I don’t care how you spin this. It’s not.

Matt Garza brought back: Chris Archer, outfielder Brandon Guyer, catcher Robinson Chirinos, shortstop Hak-Ju Lee and outfielder Sam Fuld.

Archer ranked #27 on BA Top 100. Lee ranked #92 on Top 100.

For Cahill, Oakland got BA #33 in Parker. If you accept that Gio should get the A’s AT LEAST a top prospect like Parker, then you are STARTING the convo with either Mejia, Harvey or Wheeler or maybe kids like Flores/Puello. You’re not starting the convo with Jon Niese, Daniel Murphy or David Wright. Could Murph or Niese go in the deal?

Yes, I doubt it but it could happen. But they would be Sam Fuld-esque toss-ins, not the centerpieces of the deal.

I will guarantee you, write it down. You will not see David Wright for Gio. So continuing discussing it is a waste of time I promise.

          • The only answer I have to that is Matt Holliday.

I never quite understood why they decided to acquire him, but they did. I guess they got Holliday in hopes of “flipping” him for something better.

            • I had little to no doubt somebody would try and say Matt Holliday here.

When you bring him up you do the following
              - Assume Oakland learned nothing from it. That plan totally blew up in their face.

              - Forget their original plan was to get comp picks for him

              - They didn’t trade a 26 year old starting pitcher for Holliday. They traded CarGo who didn’t look anywhere near 2010 CarGo and they traded a closer in Street who had problems with the Manager and they had a closer of the future waiting in the wings in Andrew Bailey.

It’s totally different. The value of even having a pending free agent has changed. And a 26 year old all-star lefty starting pitcher is more valuable than Huston Street and what CarGo appeared to be when he was in Oakland.

Oakland made it clear what their intentions are when they traded Cahill. They are looking for a new stadium whether it be in Oak or San Jose and when that new park opens they want to be like the Marlins, have a young talented roster that can excite the fan base. Trading for David Wright in his final contract year (then a $16m option) does nothing for the A’s.

It just doesn’t, and trying to say it does is simply looking at this through orange and blue colored glasses, and not the real world.

              • I can’t argue with that, other than to say that you never can underestimate how bad a move a GM can make until you try.

            • PS – Here’s how Oakland did “flipping” Matt Holliday:

November 10, 2008: Traded by the Colorado Rockies to the Oakland Athletics for Carlos Gonzalez, Greg Smith and Huston Street.

July 24, 2009: Traded by the Oakland Athletics to the St. Louis Cardinals for Shane Peterson (minors), Clayton Mortensen and Brett Wallace.

So they effectively traded CarGo and Huston Street for nobody.

I stumbled onto this, but in doing so, I may have found the worst move of the decade.

              • Yeah, that’s a horrible flip indeed.

              • Trading Andre Ethier for Milton Bradley was just as bad.

          • I’d trade Mejia in a heatbeat to get Gio. I can’t see him as anything other than a (potentially very good) closer. His body/frame and the torque he has on his body doesn’t translate to a long career, in my humble opinion.

        • JesseP has spoken, therfore all ideas and possibilities are thrown out the window because he found a guy who said what the A’s are looking for… he’s the know it all who we should all listen to, if that idea of wright for gio is not up to his standards, then no.. is pure fiction and get it out of anybody’s heads…
we should pay attention to his articles, it gives us a much inside on what he thinks is best for the franchise and the players he thinks are the ones we should go ahead with.. we should all remember what he wrote about brad eamus last year, how he’s a great fit and his OBP will speak volume for what sandy is trying to build for this franchise… (roll eyes)
          F S/B..

          • Alex: I’m sorry if reality offends you so much.

            Here’s another one

“According to CBSSports.com, the A’s told the Tigers that for Gonzalez they want right-hander Jacob Turner, third baseman Nick Castellanos and left-hander Drew Smyly. Turner is the Tigers’ top pitching prospect. Castellanos, a third baseman, and Smyly each stood out in his first pro season this year — the Tigers organization named them the position player of the year and the pitcher of the year, respectively, in the club’s farm system.”

There were reports that Oakland wanted Yonder Alonso and catcher Yasmani Grandal from Cincy according to Knobler at CBS Sports

Susan Slusser who is an Oakland beat report:
            http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2011/12/08/SP251M9QT1.DTL

“Oakland is looking for at least two high-value prospects and a few mid-range prospects in any trade involving Gonzalez, and the Blue Jays have potential impact players at all levels of the minors”

Do I need to keep going Alex? Nowhere do I read anything about how the A’s are looking to take on salary in this trade, do you? Nowhere do I see ANYTHING Except the fact they are looking for young potential impact players.

I’m sorry if the truth hurts. I’m not saying the Mets CAN’T get Gio. I’m saying Billy Beane isn’t going to swoon over David Wright or Daniel Murphy or even Jon Niese as the CENTERPIECE of the deal. Could Murph or Niese be tossed in? Sure… not sure why Niese would make sense but maybe Murph?

Wright will not be in the deal. I’ll guarantee you the A’s do not take a $15mil contract in any Gio deal.

          • I think he’s actually got a point. Wright doesn’t seem to fit in to the A’s philosophy.

My point is that the A’s have been known to bend their own “rules”.

            • Wright’s best landing spots would be Colorado, Chicago, Cincy. Maybe LA?

              • Atlanta.

                • My heart wouldn’t let me write that. I still hate ATL more than Philly.

                  • Yeah, but he fills the hole that’s opening up there soon.

Of course, they can’t do it until Chipper is gone, so it’s safe to count that out.

          • No, Jessep posted an opposing argument with specifics, that’s all. You are free to do the same, but instead you and the core respond with insults, childish gibberish and whining.

            • thanks Kay. Funny what a little outside reading can do. Broaden your horizons past what you “know,” and actually read. Funny thought right? :)

        • Props to Jon Heyman for pointing out Gio’s 1.419 road WHIP

          https://twitter.com/#!/JonHeymanCBS/status/147760068434210816

          • Got around to checking. His home/road splits are awful.

You gotta watch these Oakland and San Diego guys.

Conversely, you can buy low on Cincy guys. Harang was a double beneficiary of this last year, going from Cincy to SD. I’d guess CJ Wilson will get a nice bump going from Tex to LAA this year.

That’s one reason I wanted Cordero over Francisco.

    • My fear is, what if his back does to him what it did to alfonzo and his value decreases even more?? then we’d be stuck with a $16 million a year 3B who is not only unclutch but a .254 hitter with no power.. basically, jason bay at 3rd Base..

      • Even if Wright does become that, he is not a handicap on the team financially. Many Mets fans are not as down on Wright as you are and he still has marketability. Also, keep in mind that worst case scenario is that the Mets decline his option next year, pay the 1M buy out and offer him arbitration.

  • When you mention other teams being interested in a player the Mets are asking about I immediately discount it. Why? The Mets are in no shape to play in that game. Alderson knows this and wants the Mets in the news to keep the fans interested. As soon as a player signs somewhere else another player deal surfaces. To put it bluntly-we are being played as suckers.

    • So in other words for some of you Sandy is damned if you do and damned if you don’t. I think there could be something to this. Now is it that the Mets are going to do something like Niese, Murphy and Flores for Gio? Not sure. But isn’t it also possible that they are part of a three way trade with the Jays? Something like the Mets send Niese to the A’s as part of a trade that sends the Jays star Catching prospect to the Mets?

  • I’ll admit I don’t know anything about Gonzalez, I’ll we have to go by is his stats, which look pretty decent…I’m not sure I like his BB and HPB rate and the fact that he’s only averaged 6.1 innings per start…sadly, that’s a lot better than then some on the Mets Rotation.

What I don’t know is, does he leave the game with the runners on dump his problems on the pen to try to clean up every game like somebody else on in the rotation, or does he come out in between innings because of a high pitch count, probably because of a ton of walks?

Non the less, this would be a decent pickup, but there is no way we should trade from our weakest part of our roster…we need to keep all the pitching, infield and MLB hitters we have…If there is a trade made, it should be for guys in the lower parts of the system…maybe a package filled with Josh Stinson, Justin Turner, Cory Vaughn and Aderlin Rodriguez…and throw in Little Pelf too…

    • I’d give up Pelf in a NY minute for this trade. But don’t think anyone’s biting on that line, especially the As. They’re looking to punt for the next couple of seasons. No way they want him and that salary.

      • Right, which is why no way are they interested in Wright either. Now that being said, there is a chance they could want Pelfrey in the deal if the Mets paid most of his salary just so they could throw a warm body out for 2012 and then maybe deal him at the dead line.

        • I’d do that deal even if we had to pay a large chunk of Pelf’s salary.

          • Right but then you are most likely still looking at
Niese, Pelfrey, Murphy and Flores… LOL basically Pelfrey would not serve much of a purpose in the trade. Pelfrey and cash is not going to decrease much of what we would have to offer. Basically it might push the deal over the top but that’s about it.

  • I’d go Niese and Parnell for him.

    • While I certainly would trade those 2 it will have to be much more. Why would the A’s do that? Basically they would be down grading Gio just to get Parnell? What sense would that make?

  • GUYS, PLEASE READ THIS FROM THE NY POST:
Mets owner Fred Wilpon asked baseball commissioner Bud Selig to “play the bad cop” and help him scuttle a deal that could have resulted in him losing majority control of the team, a new bombshell book reports.
Earlier this year, hedge-fund titan David Einhorn was set to invest $200 million for a 17 percent minority stake in the Mets.
In exchange, Wilpon agreed that if the team didn’t repay Einhorn in five years, he would be able to acquire a majority stake for a nominal amount.
But months after Wilpon agreed to the deal, he got cold feet, fearing he could lose control of the team.
“Wilpon asked Selig to strike the provision requiring him to enable and assist David Einhorn in his pursuit of majority ownership, if Wilpon couldn’t repay him,” author Howard Megdal writes in “Wilpon’s Folly.”
“The idea would be that Selig would play the bad cop. When Major League Baseball put the kibosh on Einhorn, Wilpon would have plausible deniability, and could throw up his hands and say, ‘What can I do? This is how MLB works.’”
Einhorn heard about the dealings and, on Sept. 1, had a heated discussion with Wilpon that resulted in Einhorn walking away from the deal, according to the book.
MLB lawyer Howard Manfred said, “I don’t believe the account in the book is accurate. I think the reason the deal did not come to fruition is the two parties did not have a meeting of the minds on a key provision in the deal.”

A Mets spokesman said, “The author’s desperate self-promotional campaign for relevance has led to perpetuating baseless speculation and complete inaccuracies.”

Megdal told The Post he stands by his reporting. An Einhorn spokesman declined comment.

    • I don’t think this is anything most Met fans didn’t already know.
Wilpons pulling out at the 11th hour suspiciously coincided with the courts throwing out 9 of the 11 counts Picard filed against them. And there is no way the Wilpons didn’t realize up front with that deal it would be a very real possibility they’d lose the team to Einhorn. They were just that desperate at the beginning.

And if this doesn’t convince the masses that main problem is all the Wilpons and not the FO, I don’t know what will.

    • I believe it…I’m not a Wilpon hater, but his bad choices are why the Mets are being run as a save money first team and winning is secondary.

You look at the money owed, 25mil to MLB, 40mil to BoA, 17mil to Sterling employees from a lawsuit, plus potentially up 380mil to Picard and you throw in all the money owed on CityField and the money (I think 700mil) he lost with Madoff and the fact that I can’t see Sterling making a good profit in this bad economy…I think Fred is realizing that he’s running out of options and will be forced into bankruptcy and will lose controlling interest if not all of the Mets.

This 40mil from BoA is a last ditch effort in hopes that they can some how keep the team…I really believe that in 2013 the Mets will be under in ownership.

  • Gio Gonzalez is what Niese and Pelfrey should be by now. They should be over .500 and getting better. Gonzalez might be attainable for Niese and a prospect. If we trade Familia, it should be for a starting player (Bourjous) or position prospect.
Thinking about it, it might be Gonzalez for Niese and Familia.

    • If it is Niese and Familia for Gio, I’ll pass.

      • I honestly think that we can rest easy that Wheeler, Harvey and Familia are going no where.

That being said, can’t say I would not be giddy about the PROSPECTS of having Gio, Wheeler, Harvey, Familia, Mejia, and Fulmer all being in the organization. Will all of them work out? Of course not. Are the chances of 3-4 of them working out good? I think so.

        • Now that would be something, to have all those kids at the cusp or right at the big club.

        • Of course you hope that when you trade a prospect, you keep the right one. So which of these prospect would you trade?

  • Can someone tell me the last time the Mets made a deal that was being talked about in the news like this? Because, if I recall, most of Alderson’s deals here have come in under the radar.

    • Very true. That being said, can you tell me the last time that as Mets fans the majority of the discussion was on baseball with actual points and counterpoints being discussed that have nothing to do with the love hate relationship with Sandy?

To me this is the most refreshing discussion we have had in weeks.

    • Correctiuon about your lord sandy donal.. He hasn’t made any deals. He has just dumpred salary at the behest of his masters fred/bud/jeff and saul.

      • Hey, jimmy, Barry Bonds, 10 years $200 million. Think your idol will make that happen?

  • I can understand trading Niese if we are getting another pitcher back but not trading Davis who is by far our best 1B option. So put me on the list of those who can’t understand the logic of this organization. It never seems to have a true direction to follow.

Who is going to play 1B? Duda? really? you want Murphy and Duda on the right side of the infield? really? A much lesser player at shortstop in Tejada and Wright at 3rd who is regressing on both defense and offense.

Sandy is beginning to remind of Omar who used to trade prospects because they were not his guys.

    • He hasn’t traded any prospects away. Not yet. You’re reacting to a bunch of rumors.

    • Joe, what trade of top prospects has Sandy made? For now all this is just beat writer noise.

  • Ike Davis is NOT going to be traded. No way no how. It would be idiotic to even condier that as his upside is very high!

  • Checking in on Gio Gonzalez? Is that the same as “kicking the tires”?

    • Yeah basically.

  • I would only trade Ike Davis if Mike Stanton would be coming to NY. Which won’t happen

  • IDk about Gio and his high walk counts. To me if he came to the MEts he would just become the second coming of Oliver Perez.

  • I would pass on Gio. Gio to myself is an overrated 3SP like Jon Niese although better than Niese. Too high of a BB/9 the past 2 seasons north of 4 which is a recipe for a losing pitcher. Gio has been fortunate with his walks because his LOB% the past 2 seasons has been a high 77.6% which is Roy Halladay like for a SP and abnormal for a pitcher of his ilk and IMO is not sustainable for him. Gio also pitches in a very favorable home park to pitchers and the past 2 seasons has been a split- home-road P.

  • How did this guy become such a hot commodity? If he’s any good why are the A’s moving him? He only made $420k last season.

  • Hey HoJo I just came across this Tweet from Heyman earlier today. He says,

    Jon Heyman
mets told a’s they wont include niese, ike, harvey, wheeler, mejia or familia. trying for gio, as @Ken_Rosenthal said

    http://twitter.com/#!/JonHeymanCBS/status/147784936739446784

Of course the usual FWIW as usual applies here as well.

  • I would trade Davis and Niese only if there was going to be a Prince to be signed to play first base. Those two moves would actually give us a chance to finish in the top three.
