I agree with this, if you are going to get either one Spillboroughs is better option. (both are upgrades over Harris and Hairston by the way)

Any, agreed, but that would be another 3 million on top of Bay’s salary, so they’d be paying 20 million for leftfield in a year where that not projected to contend anyway. I just don’t see them doing it. At least with Smith. If they are by some chance contending deep into the year, and Bay is struggling vs. RHP, I can see them doing it.

Agreed. If they did it with Francoeur like they should have, he would have been successful. I just don’t know if it’s something they’d do. with what Bay is making and their financial state. He’d be a very expensive bench bat.

I have been on the Bay has to platoon bandwagon for a while now. His splits the last couple of years are enormous. He actually hits OK to pretty good vs. LHP, but vs. RHP, he would be lucky to out hit Castillo.

If you could pair him up with another solid glove that rakes vs. RHP, you could actually end up with a productive position. even better if they do it in RF, and make the team better overall (shifting Duda to LF)

very true, but he is absolutely putrid against lefties. he could never be anything more than a platooner with Bay in left or a left handed bat off the bench. prob more the latter since Bay is making 16 or 17 million or whatever. Nothing you give up a 25 year old lefty starting pitcher for. If he is part of a package that includes say Rosario or someone than go for it.

last year his OPS was 830, which is not mediocre at all. you continue to be poor at understanding stats.

you’re absolutely right. because there is no money.

why didn’t he sign Reyes?…..because he couldn’t.
why didn’t he sign Fielder? because even if he wanted to, he couldn’t.
why didn’t he sign Pujols? because even if he wanted to, he couldn’t.
why didn’t he sign Papelbon? because even if he wanted to, he couldn’t.
why didn’t he sign Madson? because even if he wanted to, he couldn’t.
why didn’t he sign Buehrle? because he couldn’t.
why didn’t he sign Rollins? because even if he wanted to, he couldn’t.

Mets can’t afford the top end talent, and still have left over to fill the other holes.

Pagan trade was outstanding. Ramirez instantly could become our best bullpen arm. and Torres instantly upgrades us defensively at a very important position, especially in our park. oh yeah, and Angel Pagan is the worst baseball player ever.

Why sign Francisco and Rauch instead of Buehrle?

1) Very hard to win with a bullpen as bad as the Mets was this year, with or without Mark Buehrle. Strong teams have strong bullpens.
2) Buerhle isn’t really a division changer, he’s a very good complimentary piece. I’d rather have a strong bullpen. Now in no way am I saying Francisco and Rauch are division changers, but the difference between what next year’s bullpen could be, and what this year’s was is worth way more than what Buehrle would give. If it was CC Sabathia it’d be a diffeent story.
3) Francisco and Rauch both coming from the offensively strong AL East to the offensively weak NL East, and to a pitcher’s park from a hitter’s park. and both have had recent success. remember when Javier Vazquez came from two AL band boxes to two NL East pitcher’s parks? career year with the Braves and his second half this year with the Marlins was absurd.

Jose Reyes was a no-brainer. 100 million to someone who has averaged less than 100 games the last three years and has had major injuries to both legs which are his biggest weapon. If it was ANYBODY

Actually I think Mets fans, even the ones that disagree with me..and heck let’s not leave it at Mets fans..how about all baseball fans know that all teams need 4th and maybe a versatile 5th OFer.

So that comment of yours that Mets fans don’t know that was nothing but pure arrogance and snark only because your Grand Omnipotent Leader Sandy Alderson is being questioned for his decisions…as he SHOULD BE.

I woudn’t mind Sandy bringing in Spilborghs as the Mets 4th OF- good PH, can cover all 3 OF spots credibly. Earned 1.6MM last season but probably can be signed for less than that. Makes more sense as a 4th OF than Seth Smith. I think Omar was once interested in trading for this guy.

I’ve always felt he was a bit of an underachiever in terms of actual production, but I smiled when you called Smith’s .275 mediocre then later tout Spillborghs’ .272 bat.

Still, a good defender who is right handed and won’t embarrass you at the plate — not a bad thought, though they should have an inside line on Scott Hairston who appears to have a bit more power at the sacrifice of batting average.

I have no idea how those Seth Smith rumors started. The deal makes no sense on any level. Not for the Mets anyway.

The only thing I can think of is Smith was a small piece of a package for Niese or something.
