ESPN: Marlins Getting A Feel For Interest In Hanley Ramirez

Buster Olney of ESPN tweets – Under category of Actions Speak Louder Than Words: Marlins have poked around in the market to get a feel for interest in Hanley Ramirez.

The plot thickens.

Original Post 12/7

A rumor circulated yesterday that Hanley Ramirez asked to be traded and is in an uproar about the idea of moving over to third base in order to make room for new shortstop Jose Reyes.

Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post reports that no trade request has been made by Ramirez, but he is still seething about the move.

Ramirez has not asked to be traded but reiterated to the Marlins his desire to stay at shortstop, a source said Tuesday. ”It’s news to me if he has asked to be traded. It is not something we have discussed,’ baseball operations president Larry Beinfest said.

But today, Buster Olney of ESPN wrote:

“Hanley doesn’t want to play third base and the Marlins were informed of that,” the source said. “Rather than ask for a trade, what he has done is to inform (the team) that he does not want to play another position other than shortstop.”

Marlins Manager Ozzie Guillen, has not spoken to Ramirez because he feels the timing is too fresh and thinks Ramirez needs a cooling off period.

“I don’t blame him,” Guillen said. “He has a right to be upset. He’s a human being. He was the shortstop. Meanwhile, I think the guy we are bringing in is going to help him to get better.’

They can sugarcoat this all they want, but Hanley is as temperamental as they come and when he doesn’t get his way – look out – it can lead to a toxic clubhouse and he’ll dog it on the field.

There’s no denying Ramirez is an immensely talented player, but his frequent bouts with moodiness is something the new Miami Marlins need right now.

Regardless of the denials, I can see the Marlins trading Ramirez before Spring Training. My question is should the Mets look into it?

At 27, Ramirez is still a player you build around – a true core player. With a career slash of .306/.380/.506 and a solid blend of power and speed, he’s a complete player and would immediately become by far the best asset in the Mets organization. It might cost Wright…Would you bite?

  • “he’s a complete player and would immediately become by far the best asset in the Mets organization. It might cost Wright…Would you bite?”

    A) No I wouldn’t send Wright, if that’s what would start the conversation then no thank you.

    B) I disagree that he is a complete player. He’s a complete talent, but he’s showed time and time again he’s immature and lazy. I have no interest in players making $70 million (15+ the next 3 years) that dog it and need to be coddled.

If all of this is true that he is so upset, then it just furthers the evidence that he’s immature. His team is getting better and all he cares about is himself. He’s not a better defensive SS than Reyes. What’s he want to do? Move Reyes to 2B?

Moving Hanley to 3B moves Bonifacio to 2B and makes the entire team better. Moving Reyes to 2B puts a guy like Bonifacio at 3B and that’s not in their best interest.

Michael Young wanted to be traded when he got bumped around but he wasn’t and he still went out and performed at a high level and didn’t make a big fuss. How many people believe that if the Marlins do not trade Hanley that he’ll go give it his all every day? See: DeSean Jackson, Philly Eagles.

  • Ramirez for david wright???? DONE!!!!!!!!!

by the way, thank you sandy alderson for this:

    • For a guy who claims he’s an old school basebll fan the mere fact you’d want to trade Wright for a guy who complains, doesn’t try, and has to be benched by two Managers because of his attitude proves you have an agenda here

This is the same guy who after he gave up on a ball said his manager doesn’t know anything because he didn’t play in the majors

Then on day #1 of Jack McKeon, Hanley has so much respect for him and the team that he shows up late to the clubhouse forcing McKeon to bench him.

In July of this year, Jeff Conine said “I think that there are some nights when he doesn’t work as hard as he should.”

Question: “Given how hard you had to work and given that you don’t think he works to maximum capacity all the time, yes or no, you don’t think he respects the game?”

“I would say if you define that as not going out there and putting 100 percent on the field every day, yeah, I would say no he doesn’t.”

Question: “Would you trade him if it were up to you?”

“If it were up to me, probably.’’

That is a guy with 17 years experience in the big leagues.

This is Hanley’s 1st real chance at being on a team with a good chance to succeed from day 1, and he’s making it all about Hanley. His Marlins were a 78 average win team with him, had 1 quiet over achieving 2009 campaign and that’s it

But you’d want him to come here why? Because he’s shown what a hard working, great leader he is? Or just because you simply hate David Wright?

      • I say pass on Hanley. They can’t afford him any more than they can afford Wright anyway.

      • What the heck? Why do the Yankees want this guy?

        • trade nunez for pitching and use him as the utility player. at least that is what they are hoping

  • Off Topic: Listening to Reyes conference and seems he nailed down the “I want to thank the New York Mets for giving me the opportunity to play Major League ball but now I have to move on” Lost count how many times he said it already.

    • It looks so wrong to see Reyes in that Miami jersey…

      Anyway.

Hanley’s not a complete player. Because baseball is mental as well. And he just doesn’t have the right attitude. In terms on field skill, yeah, he’s got it. Amazing offensive talent.

I’m not sure exactly why he doesn’t want to move to 3B. I don’t know if it’s because maybe his personal value will go down because he’s not at the top of a thin SS position but either way it shows some immaturity. I’d rather not deal with him.

Besides, the price would probably be too high. If it’s a low cost though…I’d think about it, but for a long time. The skill comes with the attitude so…

    • nk Reyes learned to lie from the master liar Alderson? Sowa’s your point? Oh nothing except to try to start hate mongering to a guy who left the team and wasn’t even given an offer, or do you think Reyes learned to lie from the master liar Alderson?

      • As usual when it comes to how you interpret what I say your wrong. I was saying in a subtle way (perhaps too subtle it seems) how he had his prepared response based on how often he said it. Something that most players have at such events but hate mongering as you describe doesn’t come remotely close to why I said what I did.

  • This is the exact conversation, I had with another Met fan yesterday. Wright for Ramirez, makes sense on the surface, with Murphy moving to his more natural position of thirdbase. Unfortunately we as fans do not know Hanley the person. I expect that the Met front office is privy to far more information regarding the players personality and what type of a clubhouse mix you would wind up with.

    Very interesting idea.

  • HR has quit on his team, numerous times, has talent .with a bat, is a bad fielder. Yeah, get rid of a guy that shows up every day for a head case, makes perfect sense.

    • Well kay, he should fit right in with a GM who quit on his team and an owner who quit on his team. They’ be a perfect troika except Hanlet wuld have to take a 95% pay cut to qualify to play for the Bad News Bears of the NL East.

      • We can only hope the owners quit on this team.

  • Hanley Ramirez acts this way because Loria has been behind him every time.

The Marlins have had 6 managers in 3 years and Ramirez is no small part in that. Now, they have a manager, owner and star who all have big egos, short fuses, and all take their gripes to the media.

  • “they didn’t make me an offer, they didn’t want me there. It was time to move on.”

jose reyes on alderson and the mets

    • alex as some of us ALWAYS expected Alderson did an absolutely HORRENDOUS job of handling the Jose Reyes situation. There was nothing “human” at all at the way Alderson handled this. I wonder if Alderson ever actually spoke to Reyes himself?

If the Mets handled it the way the Marlins did by taking him out, wining & dining, show Jose you WANT him to be a part of what you’re doing it may be a different story now.

      • Not really. If Jose wanted 6 year commitment, no cabernet was going to make that wish come true in New York… Reyes’ agents knew what their limits were and they got an offer that exceeded those limits so they took it.

      • Horrendous? Really? The Mets AND Jose both knew he wasnt coming back. So instead of playing games like the last front office did, Sandy went and fixed our bullpen, and upgrded the OF defense. Everyone but you seems to know the Mets are broke, and its not Sandys fault, it’s the Wilpons and Bud Seligs fault.

        • It’s the same rant everyday.I just ignore and laugh.

  • Hanley is as temperamental as they come and when he doesn’t get his way – look out – it can lead to a toxic clubhouse and he’ll dog it on the field.

Yup that is exactly what a team full of young impressionable players needs…. Besides, trading Wright for Hanley at best is even and would not do a damn thing for the future of the team. If they are trading Wright it will be for prospects not for someone like that.

    • “Besides, trading Wright for Hanley at best is even and would not do a damn thing for the future of the team. If they are trading Wright it will be for prospects not for someone like that.”

      This.

      • I second this.

  • Pulling the crap he does in Florida won’t be received the same as it is here in NY. No thank you.

  • Jose said Mets never made offer, didn’t talk to him. Marlins showed him the WANTED him, showed him the love, etc.

I was arguing on Twitter w/people who AGAIN made fun of my ideals and this time I was emphatic that taking a client like this out to dinner, show them the town, etc. goes a longgggg way. Show the player who he is going to be playing for – not text msg a figure – which Sandy in typical Alderson way didn’t.

And it’s more than any ol’ average joe fan response like “well they gave him 106 mill so it didn’t matter” to me that’s just the average joe, upper deck beer drinking fan response.

It was MUCH MORE than that. It was also about showing the player how much you wanted him so we will NEVER know what could have happened if Sandy just acted like a human being and do business the right way and take a player like Jose Reyes out to dinner – show him you want him – show him you WANT him to be a part of your plans for the future – tell him you WANT him to be a part of what you’re trying to do here. You never never, a guy like Reyes MAY HAVE signed with the Mets after all if you simply showed him that you wanted him and not act like a “human automated response”

Awful job by Alderson in handling the Reyes situation now confirmed.

    • So now you’re obsessed with the fact Sandy didn’t take Jose out on a date?

Let me ask you something, without getting some flame war response

Lets say Alderson told Greenberg “I can’t do more than 5 years” because it seems odd that Miami’s offer suddenly repotedly went higher and longer doesn’t it? Making na offer is on a sheet of paper, (offer sheet)… discussing parameters and limits doesn’t mean you have no interest, with that said

Do you really feel if Sandy took Reyes out to dinner and Miami offered 6 years/106 and Mets offered 5/88 that he’d re-sign with the Mets solely because Sandy had dinner with him?

    • Bayonne, didn’t you get the memo, sandy had a good day yesterday, so is all good and forgiven ok…

    • Bayonne, I have to agree with you here.

The Marlins office is conducting themselves perfectly. They’re going right after the guys they want and making it damn well clear who they want and throwing the contracts at them right away.

The fact that the Mets didn’t make him an offer is really underplayed, I think. He could never come back to this team without a concrete offer. There’s a huge difference between saying “Well, I am thinking I’ll offer you x…” and actually offering it. How does a player feel if you can’t even lay down the contract for him?

The Marlins are doing a good job with going after Pujols in the same way. They already baited Bell.

      • That’s right Satish,

The Marlins took Heath Bell out, wined & dined and showed him the REALLY wanted him – sure they had the highest bid at the time but that’s part of it, you set it up by taking the client out and showing them a first class time than you hit them with your offer.

An absolutely HORRIFIC job by our new ROBOT, text msg age GM

        • Exactly.

Look, we weren’t going to offer 6 years and we weren’t going to offer 100 MM.

According to Alderson, he structured a contract that was 5 with a 6th year option that allowed it to be up to 100 MM. But he never make that offer… He just talked about it.

That’s the problem in my eyes. If it really came down to that, I think Reyes actually could’ve stayed here. But there was no outstanding effort to make him (or anyone else) feel wanted. The media added to that as well.

          • See you’re thinking as a fan not as an agent

If you have 2 things on the table lets say

            Miami: 6yr/106 mil
Mets: Discuss 5 year with 6th option that makes deal 100+m

If you WANT to sign with the Mets, you make that work. If you’re telling me Alderson would only throw in a 6th as an option and Miami guaranteed the 6th then that is the end of the discussion.

Your job is to get the player most $ guaranteed and keep him employed for longest time possible. End of story.

If the Mets had limits, then they had limits and you move on if you can exceed them. Some of you are begging for Jose Reyes and Peter Greenberg to run the management of the team, it doesn’t work that way.

            • The Marlins contract offer was definitely superior to anything we could’ve straight out offered. I’m aware of that.

But he never laid a concrete offer on the table to work with. If a retail store says we’d like to have you working here with me and another one actually offers me a job, I can’t go to that retail store that says “we’d like to have you around.”

              • Evan Roberts just said of Alderson it was a “strategy that backfired”..at least show the guy you want him!!!

            • Wrong comparison jessup the Marlin side is right but the Met side is a spit in the face from Alderson and another one from the old piece of crap fred.

          • and Satish we will NEVER know if Jose would have taken less money to stay with the Mets if it was handled the right way. Unless Jose one day comes out and says himself which I doubt we will NEVER KNOW.

and for the gotcha gamers, wordmeisters, spinners, battle axes, sneaks, and sniveling, slimy eels, and proven liars out there who will use the ability to type to come up with all kinds of ‘faux what ifs” We will NEVER KNOW because of the way Alderson handled it

      • Did Bell get a no trade clause?

I bet half these guys are jettisoned in 4 years.

We can accept Jose back then, I suppose…

        • The likelihood is that Bell might be there through the remainder of his contact. three years isn’t too bad at all. You might see a little drop-off in that third year, but they’ll deal.

I’m not sure about this, but don’t players get some kind of veto right after 5 years? So that sixth year, Reyes can’t be traded. But Cerrone threw out a cruel point where he mentioned the Marlins could send him to the Yankees to replace Jeter. It would be before the 5 year mark too, so… that would hurt.

          • The Marlins are very business savvy, for sure. They will know when they need to move someone. If jose gets full no trade in year 5, he’ll be moved in year 4.

And true, maybe Bell stays for the duration of his 3 year contract. I can’t see them holding onto this team they are constructing longer than that.

            • I can definitely see them holding it for at least 3 years.

Pujols will play a large part in it. Because if he signs, we might see Hanley AND Gaby Sanchez traded away.

              • I still think Prince makes a ton more sense for a team bidding for Pujols like Miami or LAA

I’ll take 7 years of Prince over 10 years of Albert. Albert will be 41 when his contract expires, Prince would be 34 on a 7 year deal.

Not saying he isn’t an all time great but Prince is no slouch either and would cost you less of a commitment

          • 10/5 rule. 10 years in the league 5 on your current team gets you an automatic no trade clause

          • Satish! They get veto rights when they become 5 and 10 .5 years with one team after 10 years in the bigs.

        • One un-named GM today said they wouldn’t be surprised if Loria sells the team in 3 years, after he made a boatload off of signing starts and opening a new stadium.

    • Do you have proof that the only contact with Reyes and his agent was via Text Message?

Reyes was well aware how the fans felt? Does that come into consideration?

The NY Mets were in no position to offer that money, you know, everyone knows it, he was following the money, that’s it bottom line.

We are talking about grown men, professional athletes, millionaires, a dinner and a hardy handshake is not getting a deal done.

    • So are you saying that if Sandy had actually offered say 5/80 with an option that you would not be criticizing the move?

      • who me?

5/88 is same yearly salary as he signed with the Marlins. 5/88 is a very reasonable deal for a guy like Reyes.

He got an extra year guaranteed, something the Mets and most teams won’t do. Not many teams go 6+ years you know

      • Dependent on the value of that 6th year option and how easily attainable it might be, it would’ve probably have been the best contract he was allowed to offer based on payroll restriction from the Wilpons.

So no, I would’ve have been disappointed at the Wilpons, but not at the offer. It’s also not that bad a contract if incentives/6th year value pushed it towards 100 MM.

  • We have owners with bad attitude, might as well get those type of players here.. again, if i am the genius alderson, i call the marlins, hey, what do you want for hansley.. wright?? yea, can it happen?? yes, alex68 is driving him to miami as we speak……

  • Reyes loved how he was pursued a minute after he became a free agent but not enough to agree to sign until he got his 6 year $100M offer. Like Reyes said “this is a business.”

  • We will never know if Jose would’ve taken less because there was no human interaction.

    We will never know.

    • Actually we do.

If the Marlins submitted an official offer sheet 6/106 and the Mets offered say 5/90 the Mets would have to get their contract to be valued to match Florida’s financially otherwise the union would have a fit

People act like Cliff Lee passed on millions, he didn’t. He actually took the best offer.

The Players Union doesn’t want players hitting the open market and then accepting lesser contracts.

      • actually we don’t – it never happened

no go back to doing what you do best – using the internet to spin and outright LIE

        • How is it a lie?

The union has to look out for every player, they don’t want their high profile free agents taking less money when a better offer is on the table. Remember in 2003 when ARod to the Red Sox died because he was looking to shave a lot of $ off his contract?

If the Mets on November 1 said Jose we love ya but we cannot go any more than 5 years 88 million guaranteed and the Miami Marlins said we love ya to and we’ll go 6 years 106 million…. you’d have a hell storm with the union if Reyes decided to stay in NY

By the way regarding tax NJStuck: When former Nats/Braves prez last night was discussing Albert to Florida that point was mentioned and he said its not as big of a deal as people think. A player plays 81 games in other cities, so he’s paying taxes in those cities as well. It’s not like he pays no taxes because he’s in Florida.

Does he save $? Yes, but it’s not as big of an issue

      • Plus no income tax in Florida. Right there is an added several million to the deal.

        • NJ: Few misconceptions about the income tax

First, Albert would have to live in Florida.
Second, he’d pay taxes for 81 games so when he’s in NY for 3 games making $154k per game, he’s paying taxes on that salary when he’s in NY

The tax thing is only as big as Albert would want to make it.

Albert’s going to make roughly $12.5 mil if he were a Marlin (while in Miami) so even if an income tax rate was 10% which is pretty high, he’d be losing say less than $2m a year on income tax (and again he’d have to declare residency in florida)

So would you rather have a legit winner waiting for you, plus trade rights before your 5 years kick in or an extra $2mil a year plus having to buy a home in Florida?

I’m not sure… if its me I’d rather be in LAA, they have more of a commitment to long term winning. Miami is tough to trust, what if they miss the playoffs, Hanley gets dealt and the stadium doesn’t fill? They would trade Albert so fast its not even funny

          • Are you sure about that half taxes thing? I travel for work and I don’t get taxed based on what office I’m working out of. Just seems a little odd to me.

            • Positive.

You aren’t making a salary for performing in another state.

Like when a singer has a concert in New York City, they will pay taxes on their “salary” because they are “making a living” in that state.

It’s a taxable service called a duty tax but some call it a jock tax.

              http://www.taxfoundation.org/research/topic/1.html

http://articles.latimes.com/2009/apr/12/sports/sp-jock-tax12 Article from 2009 about Darren Oliver paying taxes.

              • Interesting. Thanks for the info.

  • for some idiot who just said hansley had a over achieving 2009 here’s hansley stats from 2006 to 2010:

    Average

    313BA 25HR 85RBI 40dbls 5 trpls 40sb 190 hits 112RS

the man had one bad year in 2011 and he’s over achiever, wright has 3 straight bad/so so years and ppl make tons of excuses for him.. this is amazing.. i rather have this over achiever than that choker any time of the day.. amazing.. a batting champion, a guy with power, speed, clutch genes is an over achiever… wow…

    • Alex:

“His Marlins were a 78 average win team with him, had 1 quiet over achieving 2009 campaign and that’s it”

The Marlins were an over achieving team in 2009, the Marlins were. You know, his team.

He’s never been on a team with this much talent around him and at first chance, he’s making a stink

    • takes a lot of nerve to call somebody an idiot when you clearly cannot read.

      • Alex, ready to apologize yet for the statements you made above?

        • Yeah, i will.. but apology to you will start with an F, it ends on a big U….

          • “Frankly, I’ve been an annoying twit and I hope you can forgive me. It would be more that I deserve from yoU”

            • Very Creative donal, let me make it clear it.. there’s only 5 letters in between that F and the ending U

              • So you were absolutely wrong because I said the 09 team over achieved, not Hanley… then you called me an idiot and now can’t even admit you were wrong. And you expect to ever be taken seriously here?

Nice alex. Keep up the classy comments.

                • jesse, we’ve been over this before, i don’t like you and you don’t like me.. i don’t give a f*** whether you take me seriously or not, i have told you numerous times what i think of you, from the race issues we’ve had, to you being a jerk, a baiter, a snarky little *****, a hypocrite, a liar, etc… so please, spare me the dramatics.. we would’ve settle this when i invited you to come watch the mets face your team the atlanta braves..

    • I think he meant the Marlins as a team had one over achieving year.Everybody knows Hanley is a beast offensively albeit a down year last year.

    • Wright hit 29 homeruns in ’10 – now that’s bad?

    • Alex68 — With all your venting about Wright and your adoration of Hanley, maybe you deserve an infield including Jorday Valdespin and Hanley Ramirez, and some other maladusted guy coaching them. Perhaps it should be Tony Bernazard. In the outfield make sure you have Manny. You’d be happy for about three weeks, then we’d hear you either complaining or screaming.

  • Hmmmmmm, that will be interesting but will the Mets take on Hanley’s salary? That’s a hard question to answer.

  • Trade Murphy to Marlins for Hanley. Murph’s a natural 3rd baseman anyway. Throw in a pitching prospect and be done!

  • Can we stop blaming Alderson for this? Jose didnt want to be in NY anymore. Alderson didnt have the payroll to sign him. Plus Alderson stated from the beginning that he wasnt going more than 5 years garunteed.
The real people to blame are the Wilpons and Selig. Selig bailed the Mets out with a 25 million dollar loan they cant pay back. He’s letting the Wilpons dig the team a hole they cant dig out of. Did he let the Rangers do that? No, he forced the owners to sell. Did he do that for the Dodgers? No, he forced a sale. Did he help the Expos? No he had Omar take over and trade everyone for crap, then forced them to move to DC.
Alderson is the GM, not the owner. He can only do what he is allowed to do. He cant give out money he doesnt have. Unless he has a printing press.

    • S Florida…. Alderson is a grown up who took the job and the world proclaimed him to be his own man. Another lie I guess. If Alderson had any problem with the stealpons he shouldn’t have taken the job. Your premise is weak. His choice wasn’t Met GM or poverty.

      • Disagree. Sandy was probably forced to come in and fix the Mets. He worked for Selig before coming to the Mets. And why are you only replying to the Alderson part of my comment? What about the rest? Look at it this way. If we had another GM, do you think it’s be different? This is all on the Wilpons and Seligs fault. Plain and simple.

      • There is a reason you are just a Ghost Omar – you have no clue about baseball…….time for a seance.

  • Sandy alderson has more followers than britney spears and justin bieber combined.. this is pathetic… the WORST GM in mets history and he has a legion of fans that defend him at all cost.. amazing..

  • Verducci is reporting a 6 year offer to CJ Wilson from Miami

If I was CJ Wilson I would run to whatever board room they are occupying and sign that contract.

    • Knobler says the Angels are the favorites.

    • It’s like Oprah’s free cars for everyone.

The Marlins are just throwing 6-year deals at everybody. One for Reyes, one for CJ Wilson, 10 for Pujols…

MLB Network said not too long ago they believe the Marlins are out of the Pujols race, though.

      In other random news:

Ortiz took arb, Hermida got DFAed, the D-backs might sign Mota, and jed lowrie might be going to the Rangers.

      • haha you get a 6 year deal! you get a 6 year deal!

        • EVERYBODY GETS 6 YEAR DEALS!!!

          *cue overdramatic people screaming/crying*

      • Just don’t ask for a no trade clause

  • Horrible, horrible news!!!!

    Joel Sherman
Fascinating is #Mets r talking with suitors seriously about Ike Davis. #Rangers, #Pirates need 1B. Tex in particular is known to like Ike

If this is true i am truly DONE with this team. This is so insane, it just make NO SENSE whatsoever – the kid is a future 35-45 HR/100 RBI guy. This Alderson guy in addition to being a PUNK, over-rated GM must be going senile. This is a TERRIBLE idea – i have no more words to describe what the HELL IS GOING ON AROUND HERE!!!!!!!!!

    • You know I really, really like Ike and I am sure this is just a rumor to get people reading twitter etc… but this quote

“If this is true i am truly DONE with this team” kiiiiiiinda make me wanna see them trade Ike.

      • Thanks, I didn’t want to be the one to say it.

        • I thought I wasn’t typing it fast enough! #tradeIkeAdiosBayonne

      • LMBO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Or you can stop flying off the handle at the rumor mill.

    • What reason do you have to believe this is true at all?

    • Bayonne, come back from the ledge. There were rumors of Buerhle to the Mets at some point. Ike isn’t going anywhere.

UNLESS Super Murphy to 1B!!! Kidding.

    • McCullough: Asked a top-level Mets official is they were seriously considering trading Ike Davis. “No,” I was told.

    • Ike Davis for who?

      • I dunno. Probably vampires.

    • I’ll help you pack your bags. Your whining is never ending.

  • Alderson was asked if should have shown Reyes “more love” like #Marlins, he replied, “If you’re asking if I should have sent him a box of chocolates, um, perhaps I should have done that. But on the other hand, the box of chocolates wouldn’t have cost $106 million either.” #mets

what an arrogant, sarcastic as*hole…… how can anybody defend this guy??? really???

by the way, there’s news that mets have made ike available… rangers and others involved… yikes!!!!

    • You guys and your “Sandy is the Anti-Christ” stance. That quote was 1. Funny, 2. a statement that there was no way they could match the 106 Mil, 3. states they know Reyes well enough to know he likes chocolates and 4. funny.

The chill pills are on isle 4, i believe. Roll your shopping basket near there.

      • Of course it was funny.. is sandy alderson and his comedy show called “the goons of comedy”.. 3 GM’s in front office and all we got to show for in 2 years is …………………….. yeah, keep laughing

  • Trade Wright for Hanley? You cannot be serious. The guy is a lacksadiscal POS. I’d rather wait to see if there’s better suitors for Wright.

    • Ugh… i wonder why you think he’s a POS?? do you know him or you going by what we all know you for…

      • what do we know Hitman for Alex?

Somebody who has 2 eyes, sees Hanley play a lazy game of baseball sees Fredi Gonzalez have to bench him, sees Jack McKeon have to bench him, sees Jeff Conine say he Hanley doesn’t give it his all?

Nobody’s denying his TALENT. Bobby Bonilla, Carl Crawford, and Milton Bradley had talent. “we” don’t want those attitudes here, the Mets have enough problems without some guy who thinks he’s bigger than the entire team like Hanley does.

        • he’s another loser just like you who’s nothing but a racis.t over latino players… ever notice how you guys get along so well??

          • “he’s another loser just like you who’s nothing but a racis.t over latino players”

Just one little problem with that statement….I AM LATINO YOU IDIOT!

            • …and Boom Goes the Dynamite.

              • or as my teenager daughter likes to say, “oh, snap!”

                • any: “That just happened”

          • But you love you some Pomes

      • Do you ever watch the games or are you too busy having your head up your ass like always? We all know the answer to that question. You just want Hanley or ANYONE in return for Wright. You always had some weird obsession with Wright even before his regression. Smarten up & keep your mouth shut, kid.

        • ahhhh, hitman… :-)

  • Per MLBTR

“2:49pm: Among young players, the Mets are talking the most about Jonathon Niese rather than Davis, tweets Joel Sherman. Niese, 25, is under team control through 2015 and could be an alternative for teams that find Oakland’s asking price too high for Gio Gonzalez.”

Umm… We barely have a starting 5 for the starting rotation.

    • Look, you have no other real opportunity to be in 1 place with all GMs and some agents and scouts etc than you do right now.

I’m sure teams practically go down their roster seeing what is out there for a player. Doesn’t mean he’s on his way out. People are looking to get things done down there, so if you’re gonna get creative this is where you do it.

5 minutes from now you could hear that now they are talking about Duda

      • I hear you, but with such a focus on the money, one would think young and controllable (and cheap) would be something worth holding onto, no?

    • I think I would do a Niese for Gio deal. As much as I like Niese and think he’s going to be a solid 3,I would seriously have to consider that if it were possible.Gio does have control issues occasionally.

      • Joe Diaz: You THINK you’d do Niese for Gio? I KNOW I’d do that.

The problem is I think you just read that wrong. They are dangling Niese out there to teams who are finding Gio’s price tag too steep… not in an attempt to acquire Gio.

I like Niese a lot, I still think this is all just talk to keep twitter moving but we’ll see.

      • They are saying as an alternative to Gio, teams may look at Niese.

  • Acc. to Sherman, both the Padres and Rockies are interested in trading for Jon Niese.

  • Acc. to Buster Olney, the Marlins now say they are looking to trade Hanley after he and his agent asked for a restructured contract. Jealous of Jose?

    • Certainly sounds like it. Ramirez just went from the only SS on the team to the 2nd best defensive SS on the team. And from what we’ve witnessed with him over the years, you have to think that’s not sitting well with his ego.

Jeeze….just pay me a million bucks. I’ll sweep the floor in the clubhouse and check my ego at the door.

Obviously, I just can’t relate to these ‘stars’.

      • he’s such a piece of work. Send him to Kansas City, get it over with. He hasn’t won them anything, nothing. He’s coming off an embarrasing season, and has had to be disciplined by the last 2 Managers.

I honestly can’t believe people here want to deal Wright for him. That does tell me that they’ve either never seen Hanley play or just have a complete agenda against Wright.

        • Agree. Like him or hate him, no one could ever accuse Wright of doggin’ it – either on or off the field.
He was the youngest MLB ballplayer to ever start a charity in his name. Let’s start with that. He’s the type of player all franchises covet. Never a breadth of rumor involving him off the field. Kind of like Jeter cross town.

Yeah, he’s struggled some the past couple of years. But not because of lack of trying or attitude problems.

          • even with a broken back, I think Wright was still more productive than Hanley last year. And it isn’t like he is some Ozzie Smith type with the glove.

I agree that if you are going to trade wright, it isn’t going to be for Hanley.

  • MetsBlog.com
Mets shopping Niese, Padres & Rockies are interested >>

btw where is Joe D today?

    • Bay,

I don’t know if you have MLB Network. But they were discussing Reyes recently and they basically were agreeing with you and I.
Poked fun at the box of chocolates comment, too.

“I don’t understand their strategy. He was your best player, make a play for him!” Kevin Millar was disappointed.

  • shopping and talking about everyone on the roster are not the same thing.

IMO, a GM should troll everyone through the water to see what bites. Not that they expect to trade them (and I would be shocked to see Davis or Neise go, they are 2 of my favorites of the young guys).

But, no harm in seeing what other teams think. I have no clue about the Padres system, but if they have say a stud catcher in waiting + some tasty pitching prospects, or a really promising CF prospect, and make an offer that is too good to pass up, then you can do it.

Same for Ike. I think he is going to be a stud for years to come. But if the rockies offer a couple of there top guys, it may make sense.

when you are building, part of the process is trying to convert 1 guy into multiple guys. Cashen was good at this (didn’t Maz bring back darling and walt terrell?

    • Yup. and Walt Terrell became HoJo

    • In theory I agree with this. Only problem is the ‘we’re not punting’ and ‘not rebuilding’ comments from Alderson. He states you only rebuild when you have a historically bad team and no minor league system. If that’s their opinion, then just come out and state it already.

Honestly, I for one would understand that better than trading everyone who has trade value and still trying to say ‘we’re not punting for 2012′.

I don’t like the statements I’m hearing either that next year’s payroll is likely to be lower than this years. How much lower can you get without removing Johan and Bay’s salary? Only other one left making any kind of money is Wright.

      • I hope that just means Bay, but Wright is a wild card in all this.

Still hard to imagine Santana actually building up trade value enough to have a team take on a significant protion of salary, but who knows.

  • A) Pass, Mets can’t afford Hanley.

    B) He’s too bulky to stay an SS for long, and if he’s gonna moan about it, forget about it. He’s drifting into Milton Bradley territory.

  • I’ll start it would not be a bad replacement. BY why should we help the ?Miami Marlin’s who have alway been our big problem team. They wanted to become a big team not there team history. Well they wanted to spend so much money on Reyes let them deal with there problem children Hanley Ramirez. Wait until the Miami Marlins run into the problem of the Walpons and have to start there Fire Sale who who will buy there $191 + million dollars Jose is Crying that the Mets didn’t want him he just was greedy and got some sucker to pay him what he wanted. Why should the Mets Make there offical offer if he and his team would laugh at it. But said they did not want me. It’s not we did not want you it we did not think you were worth lucky at 5 yrs and $80- 85 million but no you want an addition $20 million dollars plus being in a no state income tax.

  • why not, since reyes went south, why not jump at hanley, would be a prefect fit, dm at 3rd, hanley at ss rt at 2nd, ike at1st, so if wright goes why not now he’s not certain about wheather he wants to stay now, some mets guy right. So far sandy or someone on the mets finally listen to me or just us fans, cus he’s done something. Also even if reyes gets 85 mil from the mets, he will still make out even with the tax. I hope reyes starts crying cus now he says watch out mets and to the fans cus my new team is taking us out, i hope this time we get even and have the last laugh.

  • Hanley Ramirez on the Mets? Are you guys nuts? How the hell are you going to pay him? Ridiculous idea that will never happen. HR may be wind up outside Miami, but not on the Mets.

  • Off Topic: since we’ve got a bunch of people crying about showing gestures you appreciate someone, Pujols took out a full page ad in the St Louis Post Dispatch to tank the fans there for their support during his tenure as a Cardinal.

  • Wasn’t Hanley best man at Jose’s wedding?
    Not good for family relations>

  • I would give up Wright and a prospect (if need be) for him. He could use a change of scenery. Then let Murph play 3B, go with:

    Torres CF
    Murphy 3B
    Ramirez SS
    Davis 1B
    Bay LF
    Duda RF
    Thole C
    Tejada 2B

    Bench
    Nickeas C
    Turner 2B 3B
    Satin 1B, 2B, 3B, Corner OF
    Free Agent OF
    Free Agent Middle Infield

    Santana
    Niese
    Dickey
    Pelfrey
    Gee

    Francisco CL
    Rauch
    Byrdak
    Ramirez
    Parnell
    Loogy Free agent

I would send Beato to close there and be depth later. Eat Carrasco or ask him to go to the minors.

  • Only Jeter can demand that the better SS move to third.

  • I would make that trade any day. Young, good hitter and plays short…..yea.

  • NO WAY!…HANLEY is an cancer!….coming off surgery and he is lazy!

  • I would do it in a New York second!!! With Ike at first, Ruben at 2nd, Hanley at ss, platoon the redhead, and Murphy at 3rd— a pretty good infield for now– look for a 3rd sacker down the line– I heard a rumor Ike for the Pirates CF, I’d do it and put Murph on 1st–
