Well, in defense of the Broxton deal, you're talking about a player who had elbow surgery after pitching 12 2/3 innings in 2011, not to mention conditioning issues. I would've preferred an incentive laden deal starting around $1 mil guaranteed with bonuses for appearances and games finished that would've gotten him to $4 mil. or better while offering him the chance to close. But he chose guaranteed money to be a set up man in hopes of proving himself healthy and re-entering free agency again next winter. I would not have guaranteed him that much up front.

Having said that, I do think they could have and should have tried to keep Capuano. I thought he was better than his overall numbers in 2011 and proved himself healthy. 2 years at $5 mil per season isn't too bad for a solid #4 starter IMO. Maybe they're hoping for significant improvements from Niese, Gee, and, Gulp!, Pelfrey to compensate for losing Capuano. Given that they retained Warthen as pitching coach I certainly would not hold my breath for that happening.

Jessep: I'm asking for a better than .500 team next year. That might mean an alteration or two. If you are not taping into the free agent market then what's left? And, don't go get dewey on me about the Rule 5 draft.

Bayonne is right: Get creative. Thought Sandy was an out-of-box thinker? As it stands now the Mets just lost a reliable starter in Chris Capuano for the going rate of $5 million (x2) and probaby their SS, who led the league in batting.

Baseball hasn't really changed much. You strive to win the WS or you get out of the business.
(Thank you Yvaithe!)

"There in lies the problem: Who is sashaying to the frig to pop open that bottle of champs, chilling since 1987, to toast Capps coming to New York? I wouldn’t even pour a chocolate milk when that comes to fruition."

GREAT line. I'm still laughing because it's so true

I don't see why you're asking for trades to be made. No matter what he does you'll whine about it.

I guess you live in a world where 2011 baseball is the same as 1997. Sadly, that isn't the case.

You're acting like teams just trade as much as your friends do in fantasy baseball these days.

You need to stop comparing 2011 to days of the past, days when the Mets still didn't win a WS by the way. The game has changed, the franchise has changed and the sooner you realize the less miserable you'll be.

these off seasons so far under Sandy have been the worst and least enjoyable I've ever experienced as a Mets fan. Short on funds? Then how about some creative trades? How about getting on the blower and try and arrange a 3-way deal. Phillips made a lot of creative trades to help build Bobby V's teams.

LETS GO ALREADY!!!!!
