Beltran Signs With Cards, Marquis Goes To Twins

According to Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports, former Met Carlos Beltran has signed a two-year deal worth $25 million dollars with the St. Louis Cardinals.

Beltran reportedly turned down a couple of three-year offers to join St. Louis for a chance to contend.

Last season, Beltran batted .300/.385/.525 in 598 plate appearances for the Mets and Giants, but more importantly stayed healthy all year long.

The Twins meanwhile, signed starting pitcher Jason Marquis who the Mets were reportedly interested in. The New York native gets a one-year deal for $3 million according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

  • All the phony comments about the Mets being interested in X,Y, or Z. The only guys the Mets are interested in are guys nobody else is interested so they can get them for next to nothing.

    • Hey Omar I posted this in the other story but i’ll copy it here since this is where it belongs:

You would think since the Mets need starting pitching signing a starter like Jason Marquis for 3 million would be better than signing Rauch for 3.5 mil. And then if you signed him than maybe you can package one of the other starters with a prospect for another deal. But that’s of course if you want to win in New York – then you do those things.

And if Sandy is such a stickler for the minors like his minions here say he is you would think he should go that route and use the money saved to retain the minor league team they just lost.

They let a starter like Marquis go for 3 million, instead they sign Rauch to 3.5 and 12 million for Francisco. Man if they could have signed Marquis for 3 million, then sign ANOTHER starter for 9 million, non-tender Pelfrey and package him with a prospect or 2 in another deal …or if they did like I would have done this offseason, wine & dine Reyes, tell him u want him to be part of what you’re doing, maybe he signs. If so then if they could sign Marquis and another starter, they could’ve packaged Wright & Pelfrey & maybe a prospect and really make a deal to improve the team so it can contend in 2012.

There’s SO MANY other ways this offseason could have gone IF we had a GM who wanted to win and do it with the same money Saber Sandy is working with.

I can’t wait for the Wilpons to be gone not only for financial reasons but also because of this terrible decision to spend all this money on the highest paid front office who gives us the cheapest results.

      Awful.

But do not DARE question Sandy. He is the Lord Our Saviour, Thou Shalt Not Want.

      • You realize that all you ever do is question the Mets? You’re never happy. Ever. Why do you even bother?

Now you’re equating signing a setup/potential closer instead of signing Jason Marquis.

First of all the Mets rotation on Opening Day consists of Dickey, Pelfrey, Niese, Gee and then they are paying Johan $24 million. Read that again. $24 million.

First can you tell me why Marquis would want to take a job with a team that could in theory have 6 starting pitchers rather than one that doesn’t have 5?

So with that said, you want them to go sign a guy who (wait for it) appeared in THREE games last year because of a fractured leg. You knock Alderson for signing Chris Young to a small deal or Chris Capuano or signing minor league deals and then come here and say the Mets let Marquis go for $3million? Oh and lets not forget 2010 when Marquis hurt his throwing elbow and was terrible for Washington.

Marquis hasn’t been a consist and reliable starter since 2009, but no lets mock the Mets when they give guys like Capuano a contract prior to 2011 and then complain when they don’t sign Jason Marquis.

        • And do you realize you do the same exact thing only in reverse in favor of Sandy. I mean you even defended Hu and Emaus. You defended Chuck James. You defended the exodus of K-Rod, Reyes, Beltran.

So stop being so sanctimonious and get off your high horse and leave Bayonne alone.

          • I defended a Rule 5 pick because never in my life have I seen people freak out about a Rule 5 pick like some of you did. The Mets handled that exactly how you handle a Rule 5 pick when nobody takes a starting job. If Murph or Turner or even Tejada proved in Spring Training they didn’t need Emaus then Emaus goes back to Toronto.

Hu, I’m not sure how he gets on my resume now. But whatever.

Defending James? Why because I proved to you he was very similar to Jon Niese before he got hurt? He was one of the Braves top prospects at 1 time, and really throwing out support or hope for a minor league deal to work out… that’s so bad?

            You’re reaching.

        • What is funny here is if Sandy actually got him you would have a post all ready to praise the signing you just trashed for having a broken leg!

      • I’m not a Sandy Alderson fan either. He talks out of both sides of his mouth and could do better job with the resources he has. His handling of the Reyes situation was a disgrace.

That said, getting all bent out of shape over Jason Marquis and Jon Rauch – I just don’t see the rationale. Marquis doesn’t make us better, and Rauch is a needed 8th inning guy who may or may not get the job done as well as we’d like, but provides some back end stability and experience we need.

If Mets were to add a starter, it should be for someone who adds tangible value, like someone who throws hard, not a replica of ho-hum we already have.

      • Clearly second guessing, but that’s ok if its anything SA does. Hypocracy at its best!

The whole Lord Sandy tag so creative, just waiting for the “I know you are but what I am I chant to start next”. Wah wah.

        • It’s not 2nd guessing. If he said this after the season, and only after season, knowing what the outcome would be, then that’s 2nd guessing. but it’s not 2nd guessing to say what they should do as it is happening….and before you know who these moves turn out.

          • How*

          • Second guessing is also attemtpting to predict which move would be better made

            • Do you see the difference between saying which move is going to be better when you don’t know the outcome, and saying what move would have been better ONLY after you know the outcome?

              It isn’t the same thing.

  • St Louis is a good spot for Tron. Fans will like him. As long as his knees hold up he should be good.

  • I think Lozano did well to get Beltran almost what he was seeking at least in terms of annual salary-14MM per. Lozano got him 13MM per, 2 yrs 26MM. It was rumored the Cards initially offered Beltran 2 yrs 16MM or 8MM per so Lozano got the Cards to come up quite a bit.

    • Sach: It’s a nice twist that Lozano is not only Beltran’s agent who just signed with STL but also Albert Pujols’ agent

  • Side note- Why no criticism of Giants GM Brian Sabean who is supposed to be so smart? If the Giants really didn’t have the money to resign Beltran, then why give up Wheeler for just a couple of months rental of Beltran with no draft pick compensation possible for Carlos.

    • If they won another world series would you even be posting this? How can you knock someone who tried to win and took a risk, and defend those who don’t try to win?

      • But they didn’t.

    • Sach, you’re second guessing..and so is that other clown that just responded to Maniac.

CLASSIC SECOND GUESSING. The obsession with draft picks is off the charts around here these days.

The Giants lost Posey for the year, felt they had a chance, and did what they needed to do to try and win and they got Beltran – and it cost Wheeler. Unfortunately for SF they lost. That’s the breaks. You have to take the risk because there is nothing more important than winning. That is the only reason to be in this business.

To look back NOW and second guess it is…well…second guessing. Sabean did what he felt he needed to do to win AT THAT TIME and lord knows we have another tool on this site that spends every living second here second guessing moves years later and we all know who that is but yet I’ll get attacked and except for a few like Omar, Maniac, Alex, & Vinny nobody else calls out the Second Guesser.

Then you know what? The rest of you reap what you sow.

      • Bayonne I would respond to your rant but since it started with “Sach, you’re second guessing..and so is that other clown that just responded to Maniac.” and today Joe D said “if I see anymore instigating, mocking, insulting, I’ll delete those as well.”

I won’t waste my time since it will appear I’m responding to air.

        • just had to get that out of my system but i won’t be responding to this “individual” anymore because he simply makes me sick. It’s as simple as that.

        • Why dont you do us all a favor and just talk to everyone else and just ignore anything me, Bayonne, Vinny, Omar Fan, Metsie and Alex have to say, because we already know it will be just an opposing response anyway. You stick to your click and stop instigating anyone in our click.

Just comment on the other posts and comments and stay away from those who want nothing to do with you.

      • My favorite line is “I get attacked”. You can not be serious, you are incapable od debate without personal insults and name calling but Lord Bayonne gets “attacked”

    • Because he knew what the Mets dont. Wheeler is going to be a bust.

  • Marquis wasn’t coming here. They wouldn’t guarantee access to Mr Met and a parking space. That was the deal killer.

  • I think most of us realize the Mets are not in a position to win now. The Wilpons “went for it” for years but now have to retreat financially.

    • Sach,

..or you can question the moves Sandy is making and use a little creativity to at least try and win with whatever monies you have in order to try and draw fans to the park = $$$$.

Don’t tell me you also think that all of Sandy’s moves since last year were the ONLY moves that could have been made. There’s just as much chance that Sandy is doing an absolutely horrific job with the precious little money he has. Why is that so hard to believe around here??

      • There are at minimum 750 big league players on major league teams. They all cannot be Mets. They all don’t want to be Mets. The sooner you understand that the Mets are in a lousy position financially and talent wise because they “went for it” and failed, the happier you’ll be.

5 teams cannot win the NL East. I’m not saying you always retreat but this team doesn’t compare to the Phillies or Braves and the Marlins and Nats are trending up because they developed young talent and then went out and got pieces to fit around them.

  • I’m happy for Beltran and for the Cards – a very good pairing.

    • I too am happy for Carlos Beltran — a fine ballplayer and a good guy.

  • I realize that Sabean said that he felt he owed it to the team the city of SF and the SF fanbase to bring in Beltran because the Giants were the defending WC. My point is the deal makes more sense to myself if Sabean knew the Giants had the money to at least try to resign Beltran.

  • I don’t like the Rauch move either- That guy can earn 4MM next season with incentives just as a support relief pitcher which is crazy for a team that is pinching pennies. I just think Sandy is trying to create an excess in the bullpen- relievers are good midseason trade chips for a rebuilding team.

  • Bayonne, who really knows what players last offseason and this offseason really want to sign with the Mets. I think just players who really have no other viable option. Ballplayers, even opposing ones talk and text each other and I think most players in MLB know the Mets ownership situation is like the Titanic.

  • Oakland got four highly rated prospects from Washington for Gonzalez.

The A’s situation can be compared to that of the Mets.

Both have similar “money ball” type general managers in Beane and Alderson. Neither is in the best shape financially.

With the trading of Gonzalez, MLB Network showed other starters that Beane traded away for prospects over the past few seasons. Can’t recall the names but they make up an extremely impressive rotation and all are still below 30 years of age. Who knows how much better Oakland could have been had they both sought after good players and retained these starters instead of doing neither due to financial considerations like the Mets have been doing since last winter (albeit with more expensive contracts).

MLB Network cites Oakland is in a re-building mode as well. Problem is that Oakland has not been competitive since that great 2006 team was swept by Detroit in the 2006 ALCS. Ever since Barry Zito and Frank Thomas left them via free agency, Oakland only reached the .500 mark once. 2006 was also the last (actually only) great season for the Mets, who remained competitive for two more years while blowing big leads and then finishing below .500 from then on.

The financially strapped A’s have thus began re-building when they replaced star players Zito and Thomas with an over-the-hill Mike Piazza and Allan Embree. The prospects they just obtained will not reach fruition for several seasons to come. The same holds true for those Sandy has plans for as well. Taking into account the past and the patience of waiting to see what the future brings, that means a minimum seven year drought for Oakland. Who knows how long it will take for us.

The one difference between the two clubs is that Oakland is in a small market with less revenue to generate. But it still begs the question of when does “money ball” and “building for the future” becomes spin for “salary dumping” and how much in the long-term do such moves effect the viability of putting a team on the field.

At least there might be a light at the end of the tunnel for the A’s if MLB approves its request to move to San Jose which could generate bigger sources of revenue to re-invest in the team. Unfortunately for us, it’s going to be a real cold several seasons of winter if the Wilpons refuse to sell the team unless MLB can do something to force such a move (i.e., their inability to pay back the $25 million loan, etc.).

    BTW – Happy for Beltran.

  • signing marquis is trying to win? he was mediocre at best before barely pitching due to injury. if he is lucky and has a rebound year, he might be as good as Gee.

  • Really Jason Marquis? We are going complain now that the Mets didn’t sign another pitcher with an ERA of 4.55?

Talk about complaining for the sake of complaining…………..

  • Jason Marquis is a bum, we get it, people in here are not complaining about the signing of jason marqui, is more the fact that while EVERYONE in the NL EAST is getting good and making moves, the mets are doing absolutely NOTHING… is pathetic and depressing at this point, i have never seen a franchise run but inepts the way this franchise is been run… is gonna be real ugly for a while before we even content again…
