Alderson On Reyes: I Only Know What I Read In The Papers

Sandy Alderson just finished a very short conference call with reporters. Adam Rubin was gracious enough to fill is un via Twitter. I’ll be on my own conference call with Alderson later on with other Mets bloggers.

As I mentioned in a comment earlier, I had my doubts about that Reyes offer being bandied about by Jon Heyman. It would go against what Alderson specifically told us last month that he would no make any offer until Reyes is done shopping and gets back to him for a counter-offer.

As a matter of fact, you can throw out every dumb rumor you’ve read about regarding Reyes in the last two weeks. Alderson has not spoken to him once during that span. he does hope to catch up with Reyes in Dallas at the Winter Meetings.

The Posada rumor was also a bunch of bunk… Big surprise huh?

Also, closer market higher than anything he expected, and add catcher and second base to the shopping list.

  • “I certainly would hope we’d have conversations by the time we get to Dallas, or at Dallas”

I admit, I have no idea how MLB negotiations with FA’s work, but doesn’t Sandy have, at the very least, a company cell phone to maybe call Reyes or his people with?

    • There is no cell phone plan. the Wilpons are waiting for approval from Boost Mobile.

  • The flip side of the coin is that Reyes’ agent may be keeping him on a short leash. Truth is, if Reyes wanted to truly negotiate with the Mets, he would have given them a number/years by now, but he’s shopping around. But of course as per usual, we’ll go with the sensational and cater to the lunatic fringe.

  • I like that one Donal, I guess they haven’t heard that even persons with no income can get a cell and free limited minutes!
