And if he gets off to a bad start and still doesn’t perform even with the new dimensions he would probably loose his job period. Unless there’s a trade made, If I’m running the team I’m going into 2012 as Jason Bay as my left fielder with no plans to address a platoon situation.

I’m giving him a new start with the new dimensions.

That’s kind of my point. If I’m Colorado, as much as I’ve coveted Wright in the past, I do not trade my blue chip lefty with a stud catching prospect.

What I am saying is that if Colorado, or any other team with similar prospects, held out that kind of offer, that would be the only circumstance under which I trade David Wright.

Rosario & Arenado? Maybe. I don’t know enough about Arenado and the caliber of high A ball in which he recorded 20 homers. How’s his defense?

All things being equal, I would be reluctant to trade Wright. Apart from any other consideration, we are very short on righty hitters. Currently, the Mets are loaded with lefties – Davis, Duda, Havens, Murphy, Niewenhuis, Thole, F-Mart, Valdespin, Den Dekker…you get the picture.

My opinion is that the Mets should see what we have in David Wright, and if he performs well, keep him. Then, next offseason, go after Baltimore’s Adam Jones like it’s nobody’s business.

I suspect that Met Brass will give him the preseason and perhaps until mid-May to demonstrate that he can hit righties. If he performs well, then as the old adage says – if it works, don’t fix it. If he doesn’t perform well, then Met Brass has every reason to platoon him. The dual benefit, of course, would be do provide Bay the best opportunity to succeed, and use the situation to break in a rookie, whether it’s Niewenhuis, F-Mart or some other worthy candidate.

Bay has had two full seasons to assert himself as a full-time player. To date, he has not played at a level anywhere near commensurate to his contract. Other than a brief window this spring, Bay status at a full-time player cannot remain a foregone conclusion.

Metsie is right that the only reason he will even be the starter is his contract, but he has to be on a short leash.

Donal, I have mentioned Martinez as a possible guy also, if he comes to camp healthy (a big if of course) and has a strong spring. And he can play CF in a pinch still.

Alderson and his lieutenants do have a plan for the future. But if Reyes leaves, they should just admit that 2012 isn’t part of it. Otherwise their fans have a right to ask if this is New York or Kansas City.

We absolutely do have that right even based on last year. If you’re blowing it up just say you are.

Can you find a reason other than Money to not do it?

Ok the guy gets paid big bucks and you want to get the most out of it.

But the money is lost! DO we lose more by playing him against righties when you have a guy who can hit them better and give you more production?

The money is wasted no matter what so you have to wonder is it anymore wasted on the bench against Righties if you find a guy who hits them better?

It’s dumb to make any baseball decision solely on Money (thats what they are doing with Reyes if you ask me!)
And if I make a mistake in signing the wrong guy I don’t make it worse by playing him!
We didn’t keep Perez in the rotation because of what he got paid!

SO If there is an LF that can hit Righties better I certainly have no problems sitting Bay and playing the guy who gets me more in certain situations!

I say Platoon Bay and let him EARN his everyday job back!

That said it isn’t the plan the plan is to move in the fences and hope to fix him.
We will see if that works out enough to allow us to get rid of the bad contract so it isn’t wasted anymore.
But if it doesn’t work I have no problems sitting a 16 Mil player in favor of a guy who gives me more during the game!

And if I read you correctly I bet you would agree with that!

It also forces 2 guys who are pretty much at the end of their respective ropes to compete for their lives (figuratively of course). I see it as a can’t lose. If they both perform, then we’ve got at least 1 trade chip. If one performs ad the other fails we’ve still got 1 more decent LF than we had before. If they both fail, then it is status quo anyway.

Jason Bay is NOT going to be platooning, there has been no mention of a Jason Bay platoon anywhere on earth except from a couple of baseball fans. And he especially will NOT be platooning with the fences now lowered in moved in.

Also as for Wright. If he does stay then let’s see what kind of team the Mets have first before guessing on what type of contract he gets. It’s impossible to speculate now because the Mets may be a team that needs a good hitting third baseman in 2014 REGARDLESS if he’s 31 years old.

Lots of players have enormous productive years in their early to mid 30s. So let’s calm down a little with the youth movement.

so, offs are, if you sign him for 5 years (31-35 age seasons) you are going to see diminishing output. And the real possibility he might need to move off of 3B. no guaranteed, but likely.

so I actually see Wright as a guy you would keep through his contract, and likely let move on after 2013. And if the FO sees it that way, then might as well do it now.

Also, yes if reyes leaves the team will be worse at SS, but they should get a bump from 1B if Davis comes back at what he was last year before the injury. Find a legit LH hitting OF to platoon with Bay, and maybe a 2B with some pop, and overall the offense might not be that much less productive.

No doubt that we will probably lose Jose Reyes. The “big question” is whether Sandy Alderson would trade David Wright and the answer to that is, only if he is bowled over with an offer. Sandy will never panic and pull the trigger on a deal but instead will think long and hard weighing his options. There will be no gambling on a quick fix.

Sandy is here for the next 5 years unless he wants out.and the Wilpon’s ain’t selling so get used to the idea!
