Video: Alderson On SNY Mets Hot Stove

Tonight, Sandy Alderson was a guest of Kevin Burkhardt on SNY’s Mets Hot Stove show. Here is Parts 1 and 2 of the interview courtesy of SNY.tv.

Part One

On Reyes – “We’ve had a couple of face to face meetings, but I wouldn’t call them substantive in terms of a contract negotiation…Once the exclusive period ends, and other offers roll in, then I think things become more substantive and perhaps even more frequent than they were before.”

Part Two

On Wright – “Nobody is untouchable…but I would go back into the speel about those core players…In our case, David is one of those players (who identify with the fans), so we need to be careful there…But we want to build a winning team, and sometimes you have to make some difficult choices in order to do that…In those cases, you have to be cognizant of those players and the potential players coming in, but there’s nobody on the team who is untouchable.”

Nothing new really… A lot of hedging and a lot of what we’ve already heard before, but still some interesting and lighthearted moments.

Matt Cerrone of MetsBlog transcribed the interview so you can read the full transcript there.

  • Wish I had my 10 minutes back. How can you talk that long and yet say nothing?

    • He wasted so much time hemming and hawing i almost fell asleep on the couch…and I still had guests over! He took 10 minutes to answer straight-forward questions. So much more could’ve been covered. I also felt like Kevin Burhkhard was so timid when asking some questions I thought he was going to apologize.

Kevin is great but I would like some people to play devil’s advocate with Alderson and ask some tough questions and get right to the point. What are they afraid of? Is Sandy going to beat them up?

      • LMAO, i swear to god i was watching this and before i came to the blog today i said to myself “i bet bayonne will not be happy about this horrid 10 minute interview”.. LOL.. spot on bro..

  • Good interview. Alderson answered every question straight up, then elaborated in further detail. He stuck to his guns and didn’t hide from anything. I imagine the Alderson “haters” will disparage the interview just because it’s Alderson, but listening to it, it’s about as good as you’re gonna get from a GM in a public interview during the Hot Stove season. He’s obviously not going to show his hand publicly, but he gave good insight into his plans.

    • I thought he answered everything but I thought Burkhardt didn’t ask enough questions about the areas that need to be addressed.Sandy basically told us why the payroll is coming down and that he wants to build a winning team which a lot of people here claim he never says.Good interview but KB could’ve asked him more about the plans for 2012 which season ticket holders would like to hear before renewing their plans.

      • See below, but he can’t really do that in any sort of detail.

  • Kevin Burkhardt didn’t ask him one question about the areas of the team he plans on improving and how.Doe’s he have any dialogue going with other teams regarding trades? Has he made a list of free agents they’re targeting? I mean we all know they’re not going all in on big name free agents but can he ask a question that we haven’t heard asked since the end of the season? We already know he’s waiting for other teams to make offers to Reyes and no one is untouchable so this was a waste of time other than the fact that we now know that payroll is only going to be in line with revenue.

    • Meh, he can’t tip his hand. He can’t divulge any trades he may have in the works or players he was targeting, if for no other reason that that would a public indictment on whomever that player’s incumbent was. Let’s say he was going after a catcher, you think it would be good business for Thole to find out this way? He’s a GM. We know he has a list, but we won’t know what it is until it actually happens.

GMs don’t publicly divulge that information ever, which is why Burk phrased the Wright question the way he did. And what if he did divulge some info and the trade never materialized? That would look worse.

This is about as open and as public as negotiation reports are until something actually happens, until a trade is in place or an offer is made. No GM gives a straight answer in that spot.

      • No I didn’t expect him to divulge any information regarding players he may be looking to acquire, just let us know if you had any dialogue with any teams and is there a trade that you could possibly make that has been presented without going into detail. Phillips would do that but he would never reveal any players names that he was trying to move or trying to acquire.

I’m not in any way suggesting he should say yeah we’re not happy with Josh and we’re trying to acquire a catcher. We already know that the closer is coming from outside the organization but what about bullpen arms and does he feel if a Duda has showed enough defensively that he’s comfortable with him as the everyday RF’er.Shit like that. You know he’s not gonna say we’re looking to acquire player x and player y.Just what direction are you going in.

  • leave it up to xtreem alderson butt kissers to say this was a good interview.. based on what?? the man said nothing and at no point he said he will improve different areas of need we have, we have to build a winning team?? how?? by signing a bunch of rejects and play the wait and see games with wheeler and nimmo and see if they even make the majors??

    • What exactly did you want Alderson to say? The second week of November, what should he have said, that other GM’s are saying that Alderson is not? How about give us something concrete instead of making up more childish remarks about waiting for Wheeler and Nimmo because those words were NEVER said by this GM, no matter how many times you lie about it.

      • look, if you’re happy with alderson and his losing mentality fine.. but the one lying here is not me, is sandy ok. yet i don’t see you bashing him for it, just trying to attack me for no good reason, for the last time i’ll say this, i have no intensions whatsoever to discuss with you anything baseball or met related, i don’t get it, why do you even try? all you do is bait ppl here so they get banned, so please, go away ok…

        • Now you are flat out making things up, I have never attacked you or anyone ever. Replying to a comment is not baiting and individuals, not me, are responsible for their actions, how dare you?

I asked a specific question if you don’t want to answer fine, but do not make accusations you can not back up.

To answer your question about why I am not bashing 4lderson its because I do not thin he is lying.

    • Opening with an insult only makes you look bad. Do you have a point to make? Do you disagree with something specifically Xtreem said?

      Then address that.

      • i have nothing to say to you, please stop instigating situations that doesn’t concern you. stop instigating ok…

        • You opened with an insult. I’m asking you what your point actually is. I’m not the one instigating. If anything, I’m trying to actually get a baseball conversation going.

          • Read again, why is it ok for sandy not to say anything? but if i do in a comment i get hammered for it.

            • OK, let’s take another look at what you said

“leave it up to xtreem alderson butt kissers ”

That is the very first thing you said. How is anyone supposed to expect a reasonable conversation when you open with that?

              • NOTICE how i said butt kissers right? of course he’s included, but he’s not alone, there’s others as well.. you know, the MBK.

                • Ya, everyone notices. That is the point. why do you feel the need to say that? Why can’t you just say you disagree and perhaps cite a specific example?

                • Leave a reply as to why i disagree with alderson doing a good job???? are you serious?? how many times are we gonna go over the same thing? did you see his last offseason? this one is shaping up to be even worst than last years !! which, i thought couldn’t be possible..

                • No, respond to what was said in this thread without insulting the person you are disagreeing with.

  • First off it’s a 30 minute show guys and I’m sure that interview was a lot longer than you saw.
I am sure you are going to see MORE from that interview in future episodes when the producer decides to focus on other things besides Reyes and Wright.

As for what we might improve on the team don’t expect Sandy to tip his hand there until he talks to the potential players he has in mind.

What I got from yesterday’s interview is this.
He is cognizent of the backlash he is going to have if he lets Reyes or Wright go and at this point he isn’t planning to get rid of both in one offseason.

If he gets Reyes back then Wright will be expendable, If Reyes goes it makes it harder to trade Wright and he admitted that the return will have to be overwhelming to sell it to the fans!

You can say whatever you want about Sandy’s baseball philosophy but you have to admit Media Concious is one thing he seems to be very smart about!

The Goal is to pare down salary which is ALWAYS an unpopular task, He got rid of the Salaries that most couldn’t quibble with, and can’t get rid of the two WORST contracts on the books so he is walking on eggshells hoping someone else will give Reyes enough money so Reyes solves that problem for him and if not will Trade Wright for the Kids and payroll relief he didn’t get from Reyes!

This shell game he is playing with the media and fans is hurting us though.
He seems to be waiting for Reyes to play out before he goes and looks at the other positions he WANTS to get. As if he is afraid to spend money on something else in case Reyes comes back with an offer he can’t really turn his nose up on lest the press and fans get on him!

While everyone else is talking and mereting with players we seem to be waiting for something to happen before we roll up our sleeves and get to work!

And you have to wonder is that in hopes that the FA’s worth a damn are locked up so he can justify buying next year’s version of Carrasco and Buchholz?

    • I think it has much more to do with the limited budget the Wilpons gave him and his desire to bring Reyes back. He wants his entire budget for Reyes, which does have his disadvantages, like everyone else being locked up by the time Reyes is signed. But I’m not upset with making Reyes his priority, so I’ll have to deal with it. I prefer to focus on the positives, like how the FA class is weak, so what exactly is he missing out on?

      • And if not for the Wilpons and their mess, this years budget wouldn’t be < 100 MIL.
I'm putting the blame where it belongs and IMO, it's not with Sandy Alderson.

      • Well X is there even a SHRED of proof the Wilpons set the budget? ANYTHING?
AT most they said we can’t go on losing 70 Mil every year.

I doubt highly they picked the 110 mil number and since Sandy is on record saying he can go as high a 115m (thats a 15 Mil fudge factor on the stated 100-110m that has been stated) If reyes resigns! I don’t see any indications the Wilpons are limiting him and it is Sandy deciding thats the number he needs to hit until Santana and Bay come off the books!

The interview seemed to say this when he mentioned something about another team (one who he wouldn’t name) said something about having two 20 Mil players and that is all they could afford!
How much CUTTING is sustainable in a single offseason?

Sandy obviously agrees that having more than two 20 Mil players is not a good idea. and I won’t quibble with that except to say it really DEPENDS on who is making that 20 Mil!
We purged Beltran, Castillo, Perez, and K-Rod. With the other contracts that have run out we have in essence cut nearly 80 Mil off the payroll before Reyes gets paid. Current commitment to 2012 is 66+ Mil.

Thats a HALVING of the payroll in a year!
And the payroll we have cut also is going to cut into the attendance so whatever we saved on the the bill that cost us 70 Mil in losses is offset by the losses in attendance we are going to have next year!

and while it might seem like we are not going to compete for two years that still leaves you two years of an under contract Reyes that if you can just manage to stay away from any no trade clauses could be the ideal thing to have around that time!

In two years you get rid of Santana and Bay to clear up your over two 20 Mil players (by then Wright might be making as much but it’s a longshot)
And your kids are ready to fill holes so you don’t need a ton of payroll flexability to fill in and go after a Type A guy to lead or mentor them!

I am of the opinion that if we are not sure of the kids we currently have we should at least make every effort to try them in the MLB and see who surprises you in the same way Turner and Tejada, Davis and Duda have shown some ability to be MLB players!

SO you resign Reyes, (now at 86-88 mil in committed payrol which is about 50 Mil off the 70 Mil loss) fill in the holes with Minor Leaguers who cost little instead of mediocre one year fill ins (which is ALL we are going to get even WITHOUT Reyes’ salary) and hope Bay and Santana do enough to get them off the books earlier than 2015!

If we can’t compete or accept we are not competing then why does it make sense to buy a year rental of a mediocre guy who is trying to get back his career?

Wouldn’t it be MUCH better to take a chance on some of those MiL kids and see if they have some success they might turn into some trade fodder that will get you some GOOD players in a year or two or become a part of the solution that is expected in 2015?

You own those kids, They are paid DIRT, There aren’t getting any more valuable in Buffalo!
If your going to lose anyway then the Buchholtz, Boyer’s and Carrascos we will go after are not a help NOR do they fill a hole!

SO throw a kid in there, Lets see if there are some surprises down there and lose nothing!
You were going to lose with the 2012 Hairston or Carrasco in there as well!
But thats one more Mil+ you gained to keep a Reyes!

I know you guys seem to only want to play Baseball America recognized talent but you have to admit
Ike Davis, Justin Turner, RA Dickey were merely honorable mentions on BA’s list and they all turned out to be incredible players for us this year, and two of them are actual superstars compared to the rest of the roster!

It’s easy to say our MiL system sucks but as your parents used to say the first time they put string beans in front of you…

How do you know you don’t like it if you have never even tried it!

Look at the teams who HAVE cut Payroll!
Oakland, Marlins, hell throw the Nationals in there as well.
They didn’t cut salary and buy cheap FA wannabes to fill in what they cut.
They brought up kids and continued to do so until they had enough kids to go buy BIG on players they thought would help those kids win!

And Sandy should not be concerned with Payroll Flexability to go sign the next Carrasco or Harris he should just start the Fish or Cut Bait approach to the Minor leaguers we have and start using them to save the money!

If your going to lose wholesale it’s better to lose with your own assets cause maybe you can fine one that while he isn’t good enough to keep is good enough to sell for something that IS worth keeping!

So this Payroll Flexability isn’t needed until 2015 at best!
Santana and Bay will give it to him at that point!
Sign Reyes now and save the money you would spend on MAKE DO players and play the Kids because you NEVER KNOW what will happen with them and you find more gold in the pile you own than you will get in trade or by buying from someone else’s pile!

Then we can BUY SMART, not BUY DESPERATE!

        • I stopped reading when I read

“Well X is there even a SHRED of proof the Wilpons set the budget? ANYTHING?”

Are you kidding me? You’re now asking for proof that the men with the money are the ones who set the budget?

You realized when a GM wants to spend $ the owner has to sign off on it right? The fact that you won’t believe the Wilpon’s set the budget unless you actually see a budget meeting is laughable. How do you expect to see “proof”?

Your “proof” thing has gone a tad overboard.

When you give me proof that you have a clue, we’ll show you proof that MLB has owners for every team and they decide how much a GM can spend on a yearly basis.

          • Seriously. You can’t talk to this guy. And to prove he’s right, he says I don’t want to play with cost-controlled kids,I want to play with cheap crap from the FA market. Right.

            • Well your posts confirm one thing…
Your not really interested in building with Kids your more interested in playing hot stove every year with the GAMBLE of the Offseason so you can beat your chest the one time in 10 that method actually succeeds!

There are a ton of kids down in the Minors who YOU HAVE ALREADY DEEMED are a waste!
              Will NEVER amount to anything!

SO why not play them to save the money and fill the holes so when you get a surprise there you got something good or something to trade?

WHY NOT do what all the other Payroll cutters in the MLB you point to as smart and turn your kids INTO something by using them and not being afraid of losing with your own as opposed to losing with someone else’s discards!

              • You must not have read a single word I’ve ever posted or written on this site.

                • Sure I have read them. How else would I be able to show you how wrong your conclusions were or the hypocracy you jump back and forth on from post to post
Biuld with youth but don’t promote youth for example

                • If that’s conclusion you draw, I can’t help you. You’re reading what you want to read, not what I write.

                • And what was you response to starting kids in the minors instead of buying another Crapuano?

Here is the question…do YOU read your own posts?

                • Starting kids in the minors? Like who? See, there’s your broad brush again. “Kids.” Like AAA kids are the same as A ball. When you’re ready to have an adult conversation, you know where to find me.

                • Well lets start off with Chavez or Manriques at Catcher
Valdespin at 2B or SS if reyes moves on
Martinez or Capt Kirk in Center (lots of names to try here!)

                  Pitchers that could be used:
                  Misch
                  OConnor
                  De La Torre
                  Sweeny

I mean if we are going to lose anyway why spend 1 Mil on a guy who isn’t going to win anymore than a guy making League Minimum?

Those names cover EVERY HOLE on this team you can mention!
All are owned by us and ALL are not in the future plans of this organization!

Now I know this is where you will call them all crap but a 414K crap is money BETTER SPENT than a 1.5 Mil or 2 Mil piece of crap that is going to get hurt and force you to bring up one of those guys ANYWAY!

                  And Tell me something…
Was Ike ready when he was brought up or was it an emergency replacement?
Was Gee all set to go when the SMART BUY Young went down and flushed almost 2 Mil down the toilet?
Was Turner ready when Ike went down and Emaus failed so Murphy moved to 1st and Turner came up?

You can RATIONALIZE that these guys aren’t ready or even that they aren’t even MLB capable!
Just as you did before Davis, Murphy, Tejada, Duda, Gee, Niese came up!
But they didn’t show they were not ready did they?

They GOT a chance and SURPRISED everyone so don’t try to tell me that can’t happen again!
And for a lot cheaper than anyone you intend to sign with the money you saved on Reyes!

Truth is you just LIKE the revolving door because you get to look at your speadsheet every year find the pile of dung that is cheap and then spend the rest of the season trying to make a 4.5+ era sound like not such a bad deal!

          • Well Jessup then tell us what budget of the 5 different variations the Wilpon’s set?

Is the 95 Mil Sandy WANTS to wind up at so he has money for the OVERSLOTTING of draft picks?
100 Mil that is the low number?
the 110 Mil that is the median number?
the 115 Mil that is the number he might go up to if he gets reyes?

Seems to me like they set three different numbers if what you say is true!

Or did they just say STOP the LOSSES we don’t care how?

I can PROVE Sandy set the budget because he seems to have anywhere from 95 Mil to 115 mil to spend!
So the Wilpons have given him at least 115Mil to spend so why does he keep saying 100-110 mil?
They didn’t set that number SANDY DID!

            • The owner sets the budget and the GM sets the payroll. Let me explain to you the difference. You need a new car, and you have $25,000 you could spend. Do you go and buy a $25,000 car? Maybe. But what you most likely do is shop around, find the best price and best deal you can get. If you get a better car for $20,000, are you gonna buy the more expensive one just because you have the extra money? I hope not.

The Wilpons told Sandy he can go as high as $115 if Reyes fits into the picture. That’s the budget. He’d prefer it be $100-$110 without Reyes. Sandy sets the payroll. Not the budget.

              • Willie go round in circles?

SoWilpon sets the BUDGET and Sandy sets the payroll which means when the payroll is 95 mil or Reyes goes or less than 115 mil it won’t be Wilpon’s fault it will be Sandy’s!

Thatnk you for playing who sets the payroll and who is to blame for lowering it even more than Wilpon said it could be!

                • Metsie

“I would buy the 25Mil REYES who will maintain MOST of the attendance we had last year so the finances don’t get worse ”

Can you prove that? Since you like proving things so much…

The Mets went 77-85 with Reyes having a career year. Can you guarantee signing Reyes makes them a *better* team in 2012 than they were in 2011?

I don’t buy my tickets for a bad baseball team because Jose Reyes is playing.

Besides, he’d probably just take himself out after the 1st anyway.

                • So, you’d by the $25,000 car just because. You don’t get it. It’s painfully obvious.

                • I would buy the 25Mil REYES who will maintain MOST of the attendance we had last year so the finances don’t get worse instead of buying 10 useless one year scrubs who do nothing for us in making Reyes production or attendance draws and will discarded in 2013 because they either were ok and now cost too much or because we got what we paid for and they sucked!

Wasting 25K on a car that will serve apurpose for. Few years is better than 10 clunkers at 2k each. At least I know the 25K car works well.

                • Zing! Well played.

And for the record, when Metsie decides to come to a debate equipped with all the info, I’ll play along. $25 mil? Sure, if it’s 3/$75 or 4/$100. Fine with me. 6/$150? Well, I used to live in Miami, so I can point out all the hot spots to Reyes.

                • Can you prove he won’t Jessup?
Here is what I am using as proof.

Reyes has improved every year since his injury in 2009!

                  2009 – .279 BA
                  2010 – .282 BA
                  2011 – .337 BA

This is where you mention his dip in OBP for 2010 which you say you don’yt like right.

Well lets look at SLG which you DO like!

                  2009 – .395 SLG
                  2010 – .428 SLG
                  2011 – .493 SLG

He has reduced his Strikeouts by 30 or more.

So THERE is my proof Reyes will continue to do what he has been doing.

NOW pony up and show the proof you have that he won’t!

I won’t be holding my breath for it by any means!
Cause I know you have none!
No empirical evidence that Reyes will decline just a BIG FAT GUESS!
When Studies show that even when a player PEAKS and has a career year, in most cases the decline is GRADUAL not DRAMATIC and that only happens once he hits 33!

Thats what YOUR OWN STUDY SAID!

                • And when Metsie does come with the evidence and facts (like how OBP doesn’t correlate better than something else) you pack it in and run from it!

I just showed the facts you do NOT want to build with the kids you want to buy scrubs at 1-2 Mil per!

With facts like your who really needs to bring anything else I just use your own crap against you!

  • You’re all over the place here.

“Well X is there even a SHRED of proof the Wilpons set the budget? ANYTHING?”
They’re the owners. Who else would set the budget?

“I don’t see any indications the Wilpons are limiting him and it is Sandy deciding thats the number he needs to hit until Santana and Bay come off the books!”
Really? You think the owners are giving Sandy a blank check and he’s the one who’s deciding how much of it he’ll spend? I’d use the bridge joke, but it’s been beaten to death.

“Current commitment to 2012 is 66+ Mil. Thats a HALVING of the payroll in a year!”
No it’s not. That’s committed to five or six guys. They need 19-20 more to fill their roster.

“SO you resign Reyes, (now at 86-88 mil in committed payrol which is about 50 Mil off the 70 Mil loss) fill in the holes with Minor Leaguers who cost little instead of mediocre one year fill ins (which is ALL we are going to get even WITHOUT Reyes’ salary) and hope Bay and Santana do enough to get them off the books earlier than 2015!”
Ok. I think that’s more or less the plan, depending on what Reyes’s contract demands actually are.

“Wouldn’t it be MUCH better to take a chance on some of those MiL kids and see if they have some success they might turn into some trade fodder that will get you some GOOD players in a year or two or become a part of the solution that is expected in 2015?”
Too broad a brush. You can only call up players who are ready to be called. I’d rather spend a million on a guy with no future than 450K on a kid who’s callup might ruin his future. Carrasco was a bust, but I’d sign him again tomorrow for that roster spot instead of calling up say, Cohoon or Familia who clearly needs more time in the minors.

“There aren’t getting any more valuable in Buffalo!”
    Yes they are.

“If your going to lose anyway then the Buchholtz, Boyer’s and Carrascos…”
Two of those three deals weren’t guaranteed and one was a straight up minor league deal.

“SO throw a kid in there, Lets see if there are some surprises down there and lose nothing!”
There’s a lot to lose if you rush a top prospect.

“So this Payroll Flexability isn’t needed until 2015 at best!”
Really? Are you aware what pitchers are FA’s next year?

    • “Who else would set the budget?”
      The GM!

“That’s committed to five or six guys. They need 19-20 more to fill their roster.”
      NO that includes the following:
      Wright
      Bay
      Davis
      Duda
      Tejada
      Murphy
      Turner
      Pridie
      Thole
      Baxter
      Nickeas
      Santana
      Dickey
      Niese
      Gee
      Beato
      Herrera

      I count 17!

“You can only call up players who are ready to be called.”
Oh please you can call any kid up you want there is no READY LINE and even if there was the kid is just as likely to go 6 innings as Capuano is! Was Gee ready? He won more than Cap did!

You just would prefer to not use the Minors so you can make excuses to sell off talent!
If you try those kids and they succeed the move to let Reyes go looks like a mistake!

You want to build from the minors on up then no time like the present!
And if you don’t believe now is a good time to fill with the Minors then what gives you reason to think later is going to be any better?

Or is it your intention to just keep buying trash every year until you Luck fates you with a WS so you can say how SMART (not LUCKY) you were?

  • Metsie, you’re falling into aggeee territory with those put me to sleep replies LOL.. damn.. my eyes are tired!!! LOL jk my friend..

    • I was going to make a piece about it but just was too lazy to go through with it as I have better things to do than to try explain reason to people who are more interested in Buying crap every year than TRULY trying to build with kids we already have!

      • LOL, you should’ve made it an article, your articles are ususally spot on and fresh to read, you should become a consistant writer here, you’re on the group that actually see baseball for what it is instead of looking at the boxscore or have someone texted it to you!

        • Thanks Alex may flesh it out later!

      • No one is interested in buying crap every year – some of us don’t want to OVER SPEND for crap that has been the history of the NY Mets for a LONG time. Big difference.

        • No one is interested in buying crap every year”

don’t tell that to sandy alderson!

          • Are you stalking me now?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA You can’t make this up……..

        • “No one is interested in buying crap every year”

The Jersey Shore cast would disagree with you, but they can’t hear you all the way at the top of their hair gel soaked pile of money.

          • n’hate, unlike you they’re douch9es how at least make $… you on the other hand are just one who bring nothing to the table…

              • ?????

                • That’s Donal pretending he’ a grown up!

              • Thank you for Replying to Donal, unfortunatly there is no one home. Yes the lights are on but no one is home! Never has been!

If you wish to try again and get a straight forward informed and adult answer try back in 2020 when he might have a reasonable chance and a full education to draw from!

                • free comedy lesson: don’t break character when doing something like that. When it becomes obvious that it is just you shouting at the other person merely so you can be heard and have the final say, it just looks ham fisted and pathetic.

                • True you are better than I am at making people laugh!

Your know AT you not with you!

        • Well that did sound idiotic, I typed one thing, thought of another. I do not want ANY crappy players signed at all, but the past LONG history of this organization (not a slam at Omar specifically or only) of paying a lot for players that WERE crap. Spending big does not equal greatness, not does not spending, give me smart spending.
